This is an excellent point, the "GRRM love secret id's" is really more of a fan made mythology popular among folks who are in fandom but not readers of the books. Like clearly the theories have some origins with book readers, but it wasn't book readers that brought them to the forefront of popularity. Have you seen Company of the Cat's video on this topic? She does a way way better job than I could ever do at tearing into this whole "secret id" and how GRRM writes thing.

The alchemist/Jaqen, Sarella/Alleras, Jayne/Arya, the Davos switcheroo, Roose having someone else wear is armor, Garland dressing up as Renly, Alayne/Sansa, Varys/Rugen. Edit: Davos, Roose, Rugen, and Garland are all revealed to the audience after the fact We have many confirmed or nearly confirmed instances of people pretending to be other people, or using multiple identities. But they’re all either explicitly laid out or very heavily hinted at.

@MiraArrr i think the argument would be (at least this is how I'd look at it) That George has plenty of characters that are secret from inworld characters. Like rugen the jailer most people in universe don't know who he is actually. But like there aren't that many secret from the reader characters. Like Alleras, I think we're supposed to know that they're Serella as the reader.

I think that's a great observation. It definitely fits more with wild wing culture than it does with a lot of other software and culture. So it's the kind of song that he would enjoy it. Because it meshes well with where he lives.

You have no idea what you're talking about First of all, Cersei is ready to appoint 2 renowned hedge knights, not "any loser with a sword". So like in the real world as well as fiction nepotism is a thing, politics are a thing, a basic shortage of individuals can exist.. People might not like other people. And I think we can actually see all of this in the books. Like id argue ser rodrick is a pretty decent man at arms, not the best but pretty darn good. Where as ser tallad had he been selected would have been very poor. Like sure he's good at beating up people who aren't masters yet but Bronn calls him out as repeating techniques in a really obvious way. That would get him killed in a fight with someone of Bronns level.. So like just even within the text. We can see that potential choices aren't always the best and even if you pick someone pretty good they might not be the best in the world or anything like that. Plus there's like the whole concept of sometimes someone can be a bad a**, but they're not a great teacher, so i'd argue that you could pretty easily end up with a master at arms. That isn't like the best or even potentially might be detrimental, just like the way you could end up with a dojo instructor or a boxing instructor bowith it bullies the students or is just there, because he knows the master of the gym. You could easily get that with a master at arms. But all of that aside, even if you had a decent master it arms, it wouldn't necessarily mean that you would be a bad a** like we see plenty of people who are trained to fight in theory but and weren't that great. And then we see people who seemingly have put in a ton of work by themselves and gotten to be the best even if they're mastered, arms might have only been middle of the road like with Brienne. We don't really get any indication that her master at arms was like the best fighter in westeros. We just get the indication that he was a pretty decent trainer and probably came up with a good regiment for her. Even though it might have been fucking horrific, given that involved a lot of killing of lambs and shit 0_0 I suppose the overall point is that just being given the title master at arms doesn't necessarily mean you're. The greatest fighter might mean you're a good trainer. Might mean you're just pretty good at your job. Might mean you are very good fighter. Might mean none of those things. Might just mean youre not a Tyrell candidate... kind of depends on the individual.

A master at arms, especially at a great castle like Winterfell would be beyond a black belt if you were to compare him to modern fighters. Just being a knight is like having a black belt while being a squire is having a white to brown belt, depending on how far your squire training is. I say this as someone who does BJJ, a martial art which is known for having the one of the hardest blackbelt to achieve in martial arts. And just because you're a black belt doesn't mean you're invincible. There are high level purple and brown belts that are better than low level black belts in the same way how Peck and Jaime as squires were able to defeat knights. Ser Tallad was kicking everyone's ass at the Red Keep and Bronn says "he's good but he's repetitive and that would be his downfall if he fought me" First of all this is just Bronn claiming he could beat him, we don't actually know if he can beat Ser Tallad. Second of all even if that's true Bronn himself is an excellent fighter so that's not really a dig to Ser Tallad at all. Third of all Ser Tallad is like plan C, the obvious choice is Loras, Cersei says she can't chose a different kingsguard like Balon so ponders between 2 renowned hedge knights. Even plan C for the new master at arms is a good fighter is my point. All I am claiming is Ser Tallad is a good fighter and not just "any loser with a sword" not that he is one of the greatest fighters in Westeros. The fact that you would say that someone as good as Ser Tallad is a poor choice at master at arms just shows how prestigious the position is lmfao. Honestly a little confused because I was defending you and your point but now you are arguing against that point?

Yeah, My basic understanding of a lot of these theories is that people are kind of trying to work backwards from the idea that Jon's dad is still alive. And that they're gonna have some kind of big meet up. And it's going to be super important to the story.. It's very strange in a way because it's like you're starting with the fanfic, But it's not even a fanfic that makes any sense within the story?
