Griffith not a villain? We all know what he did. That moment at the end of golden age definitely cements him as a villain. But nobody knows about besides Guts, Casca and Rickert. The true tragedy of Berserk is that Griffith is the most evil person in existence yet he's hailed as a hero while Guts who has suffered so much and had to struggle so hard to survive is viewed as a villain and a monster by most of the people in the series.
+Midora "Third Tiger" except for the part where you remember that the only reason Falconia needs to exist is because Griffith created the need for it in the first place. People flocked to Falconia after the world transformation because suddenly horrible monsters were attacking their villages and they heard it was safe there. You could argue helping fight off the Kushans was a good thing, but he only really did that because it helped him get a foothold in world politics. Griffith is literally a rapist, and caused mass genocide. Now that's not to say morals in Berserk are completely black and white. Guts isn't exactly a saint, and the duality of Griffith being called "The White Hawk" who will save the earth from darkness while literally being a demon, and Guts being called the Black Swordsman thought to bring death wherever he goes, despite him being pursued by demons rather than bringing them, is definitely intentional. But Griffith is most certainly a villain.
Well I don't think you completely understand what a villain is. Now depending on your perception of evil, you can consider him a villain or not. Uber said in one of his videos that he sees evil an evil person as someone that is unforgivable. However, while Griffith did sacrifice the band of the hawk, look at what he's doing now. He is trying to create a utopia around the world and has saved countless lives and brought them out of poverty, etc. Ultimately, Uber (and I) believe Girffith is doing the greater good, as he is helping the entire world. However, Uber (and I) still think Guts has a right to impose his justice upon Griffith, regardless of the good he's doing, as he needs to repent for his immoral actions. Hopefully this gave you some insight on why he was questioning if he was a villain or not. Sorry, but I don't remember the video that he was talking about this.
+Shea Monty I think you're missing the point of what I'm saying. What Griffith is currently doing is the hyper extreme of Utilitarianism. Sure he may be helping people, but you can't ignore the fact that he's also harming a *huge* amount of people at the same time. It doesn't matter if the good outweighs the bad, the fact that he's still (directly and indirectly) causing the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands, of people makes him a villain. Would you be ok with a ruler having a "needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" mindset if you were one of the few, and you didn't have a choice?
Well this is why I said it is up for interpretation for what you consider evil. And actually, the answer to your question is, yes, I would be okay with it. If only about 100 (forgot how many band of the hawk died) were to die to create a great world for millions, that seems very reasonable.
I've been getting into the seinen demographic recently bro. holy shit. shounen dont compare with what you can learn. ima check all these out. I got to check out berserk, monster 20th century boys as well. seinen all the way.
This segment has to come back man, really awesome, i love both Berserk and Vagabond, they are excellent. In regards of Vinland Saga i've been planing long ago to check it out, it looks very good. Keep up the good work.
these 3 are the holy trinity . these 3 always take the first 3 spots in any top 10 list or should. 50+ seinen read and not a single one that tops these 3
T .Saldiran I said partially. It obtains shounen elements later, like magic, a loli character, an annoying boy, fairies, pirates and loads of comic relief. They are all shounen elements. It's not as dark as it used to be. It was around the millenium falcon arc that this started to happen. There is rape and monster killing in some shounen too, just not as much.
Berserk? A fucking shonen? For real???? I think you're saying that because lately there's been a lot more of magic shit and comical scenes than usually, but bro, by no means this is shonen-like seinen. This is a fucking seinen to the core. The only reason for these new elements is to make it more pleaseable to read. Back in the Conviction arc, shit was so dark that i'd make you want to drop it, like waaaay too dark. Now it's a lot more "light" cause things are starting to get better for eveyone, but, keep in mind, this IS Berserk, and the happier the times, the worse they will come to an end. Do i have to remind you how happy everyone was halfway through the Golden Age? Yeah, so don't get fooled by all the magic, the fantasy, and the new friends, cause you know for a fact that Miura can end all of this in the more fucked up way possible just like that.
Yea I agree. Berserk is nowhere near as dark as it used to be. It definitely has a few shonen elements to it. But at the end of the day it's still a seinen.
For those that don't know already Kodansha USA releases Vinland Saga Book 1 on October 2013. Book 1 is Volumes 1 and 2 combined. More info can be found at their site. I don't work for Kodansha. I'm just here to spread the love.
I think that one of the things that make Vinland Saga more than just a revenge story is that POSSIBLE SPOILER Cows fly lalala mooo dog barf sigh I need a better way to warn of spoilage who now brown cow. Askeladd became somewhat of a father figure to Thorfinn. oink don't read what is back there if you don't want it spoiled.
You Should read 7 Seeds by Yumi Tamura. Here's what's it's about The series is set in a post-apocalyptic future long enough after a meteorite hits Earth that new species have evolved, and follows the struggles to survive of five groups of young adults after they are revived from cryonic preservation. The title comes from seven caches of supplies, called "seeds," laid down by the Japanese government.
You could read Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer. I did, and I liked it. Mostly I just want to see what you have to say about it, since you view what you read through a literary lens. It's nice to realize that stuff I read isn't junk food for the mind essentially.
I loved your overview, specially the one about VAGABOND since it's my favourite!it's spectacular to see someone have an inteligent talk about this amazing mangas! You're very analytic and honest! Waiting for the next one of VAGABOND, because the artwork gets even better and the story...well...you'll see! Thanks for the video! Keep it up! \(>0
PeeJayTOCool M.C. If getting part A to Part B is what you call adventure, then almost every series ever existed is an adventure, I know that berserk is an adventure series, but your explanation to back it up is a quite stupid imo
Yeah I checked Amazon, it looks like it's about $10 per volume on there which isn't too much above the average. I checked out a few volumes online and it's awesome so it's definitely worth it to me. I'm thinking maybe buying boxed sets would be the easiest way to collect them. Do you know if the full series up to now is sold boxed anywhere? Or should I get the graphic novels from Rightstuf?
i just finished reading vagabond and i must say that it is amazing. The only annoying thing is that a chapter hasn't come out in ages. The art work is beautiful, actions scenes are amazing. I love seeing takezo change and become a mature man with the ability to actually smile and control that demon of fear inside of him. The romance is another thing i love about the series. It's a great series. Berserk has always been one of my favs but vinland saga might have to check it out....
I enjoy when you review things, so when you have caught up with One Piece I hope you'll do some overview videos. Example: War, fishman island, etc. And unrelated, it would be cool if you did a video where you compared similar things in manga like comparing the many time skips in a variety of manga.
Some fantastic seinens are: No Longer Human, Akumetsu, Sanctuary, Lone Wolf and Cub, Wolf Guy, Parasyte, and Hotel (A composition of 5 different One Shots - first 2 are brilliant, other 3 are ok).
People been getting into Berserk for like the past 20 years or so. People on you tube finally getting sick of only talking about the same 3 anime and manga or whatever.
..Of course my bookstores bo longer carry anu of the volumes (assuming they ever did) and l don't trust buying stuff oner the internet. So my search, continues. Gr8 vji, as usual.
oh okay I get it now, that explains a lot, a shame. I read somewhere about the new chapter 304 coming out at round about 2 weeks from now, but i'm not really sure about how reliable the source of my information is, the only reason why i think it's the real thing is because they have a recollection of all the release dates of every single chapter of vagabond so far, so yeah it might be true, not saying it is though. :)
You should also check out Basara which is also by Yumi Tamura. The story takes place in a future Japan, reduced to a barren desert by a catastrophe at the end of the 21st century. The main character is Sarasa, a girl whose twin brother, Tatara, is prophesied to be the "child of destiny" who will bring back the country's independence and stop the tyrannical rule of the Red King. When Tatara is killed, Sarasa pretends to be him in order to keep the downtrodden from losing hope.
Go on mangareader they have the series in volumes(Chapter 1 = Volume 1). They have the whole thing. And from what I've heard the anime cuts out a lot of stuff from the manga.
For the first 33 when it says chapter it means volume after that they uploaded the rest in individual chapters. Mabye to save time i don't know but its all there.
l've been joresing 2 p/u ome Vagabond, ever since Zipblockgory once made the recommendation. l'm not on2 manga, per se, but if *whatever lookis good, or catches my eye, l'm willing 2 give it a shot. l saw recently some pages/panels on youtube, now l want 2 see the series, even more! l found the artwork 2 be the most un-maga like artwork yhat l had seen. (No eyes half the size of ones head, or rubberband like mouths) The art put me in yhe mind ot the art of Hirosdi Hirata. Beautifully intricate!
I wanna get into Berserk but I can't find it for a good price, and online manga sites don't seem to have the full series. I hear it has an anime too that I wanna check out. Any suggestions on where to look?
i just got vizbig vol 1 of vagabond and i've read 3 chapters i'm loving the art so far very detailed. i would read more but i have to study. will you be doing one of these this month?
Seinen? Wel ok you should definatley read the following Biomega, Yamikagishi, Threads of Time, Lone Wolf and Cub ( 1 of the best), Basilisk (its very tragic),and Sidooh
Julia ardi 1. Berserk 2. Vagabond 3. One piece (manga as soon as they get to the new world) Three extremely good series n they do come very close to eachother it's scary but il say berserk is just the best
Shea Monty you'll be surpried because one piece ACTUALLY has the most well written story out of the three n I'm caught up with all 3 manga, I'm not a fanboy n one piece isn't KNOWERE NEAR my top 5, but the level of writing this guy puts his arc IS CRAZY, especially when punk hazard starts
dude surprise me then, because there are a bunch of plot devices, plot holes, and inconsistencies. Also, the character development is terrible, no one really gets any and when they do it takes forever to showcase it. Uber even explains this shit in better details in some vids.
one piece is terrible. I'm only on volume 3 in vinland saga but it's already one of my favourites. Berserk Golden Age is probably my favourite work of fiction but post golden age the manga has been sucking dick. The loli witch was a travesty. Yet to read vagabond.
To everyone who loves seinen, check out Feng Shen Ji, great story, great art, all pages colored, i dare say the drawing rivals that of vagabonds and to top it all off, it's fuckin badass. If i were to say my top 5 fav seinen right now, it be Vagabond, Berserk, Feng Shen Ji, Akumetsu and Akame ga Kiru.
really i think takehiko inoe is a better artist than them both in vagabond any way due to the mixing of detailed pen work and brush work in the same panes
@uberhikari I'm having trouble enjoying Berserk. I've read up to the Lost Children arc but so far I just find it quite predictable and ok at best. Maybe it's because I'm not into gorey and ecchi stuff. Does Berserk get any better later on? Or am I jsut missing something when I'm reading? I'm not hating or anything I'm just having trouble understanding what makes Bersekr so appealing.
