It’ll take about an hour to get from Manhattan to JFK on the AirTrain.
While you can take the subway, it takes quite a bit longer, so I suggest taking the Long Island Railroad.
Take the LIRR from either Penn Station or Grand Central in Manhattan, to Jamaica Station in Queens.
Arriving in Jamaica, you’ll see big yellow signs directing you to the JFK AirTrain.
The cost of the AirTrain is $8.50, and you’ll pay before boarding. The payment system was upgraded. You no longer have to buy a MetroCard from the kiosks, which a lot of first-time visitors found confusing.
The AirTrain went contactless, meaning: you can just swipe your credit card and walk through the gates. If you need assistance, look for a worker in a red jacket to help you out.
On the AirTrain platform, the screens will show you how long it’ll be until the next train to JFK’s terminals arrives. About 10 minutes later, you’ll be stepping off the train, and ready to check in for your flight at JFK.
