This is Spiritual Studies session #37
The Little known Manichaeism flourished from Rome to China in the first millennia AD. In the interest of investigated the era of early Christianity, Manichaeism would prove to be both a strong competitor and also a irreplaceable inspiration for later Christianity and Islam.
So who was the prophet Mani?
How did this belief system mix Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and Buddhism? How did Manichaeism grow so significantly?
In this session we get a rounded acquaintance with this undermentioned chapter from our collective past.
What wisdoms can be gleaned from this considerably “dead” religion?

The mention of Pythagoras is important because there is a straight line from Pythagoras to the Essenes , Christians, Elchasites (where Mani was a member since age 4) to the Manichees and then the Mazdak the Bogomils and finally the Cathars. I see Mani as someone attempting to heal the rift in world religions that began with Judaism and Christianity. Mani wanted to bring all major world spiritual traditions into unity and it's no wonder he and his followers were persecuted. I also believe that Mani thought this was the original task of Christianity until it became re-Judaized and dogmatic about its beliefs.

Theres not enough information out about this belief system, and it makes you wonder how much truth was contained in this religion to cause it's being wiped out completely after so quickly spreading across the European world. You do a very good job laying it all out, so to speak. Theres not enough information out there about this system.

Hey, man. This was great. Glad you're personable. Have you looked into the Essenes and the Ebionites? It supposedly connects Egyptian religion (sun religion I believe, I forget the name) to proto-christianity. Reminds me a lot of this and gnostics.

I’m glad you mentioned that this nihilism seems like a modern idea, but it’s ancient. I thought the subversive idea thar the repressive God of the Bible could be the bad guy would be some kind of rebellious modern idea, but apparently it’s ancient.

When and if ever humanity has detached itself from its cultural program/myth/religion, nihilism is what lies beyond the grid. In pursuit of meaning and purpose, created by others and bestowed onto you, or self created or denied. I believe nihilism has surfaced throughout ancient societies, it's just not what we put in the history books.

Excellent breakdown! This is probably the best podcast I've heard so far dealing with Manichaeism. Love your deep insight, syncretic approach and clear, thorough analysis. Will you ever do a part two on the subject? Would love to hear more about this fascinating tradition. Also are there any books that you can recommend? on the subject for those who want to know more.

It is fairly likely I'll be wrapping back into this time in history. It will become very relevant when discussing Sikhism. However, there are many subjects on the back-burner for a part two, so that'd be a distant session. In regards to resources, check out the links in the description and investigate the work of Jason Reza Jorjani.

The diving down from the tree to bring back to the light sounds a bit like Christ's crucifixion on the cross (wood = tree) and descent into Hell (the water = the deep, Tehom or Tiamat in Genesis 1) and resurrection and ascension

From modern Iran, raised in a Jewish Christian sect. "The Cologne Codex as a whole indicates that Elchasaism was more important and widespread than hitherto known... (1) ritualistic conception of piety, life “according to the Law” (nomos), (2) keeping of the sabbath, (3) repeated baptisms (violently attacked by Mani), (4) “baptism” of food, (5) ritual preparation and baking of bread, disapproved by Mani, (6) acknowledgment of the gospels (so also Mani), but rejection of St. Paul, to whom Mani was indebted, (7) vegetarianism (so Ephiphanius and the Fehrest), implied though not expressly mentioned by the Codex (accepted by Mani), (8) cyclic incarnation of the True Apostle (taken over by Mani). iranicaonline.org/articles/alchasai-a-sectarian-in-the-early-christian-church-1st-2nd-centuries-a

Niflheim is the realm of mist (you can't see through mist). It is cold and dark and icy, the lowest part of which is Niflhel (Hell is not a realm in itself in true Norse, just a keep called Niflhel). Muspelheim is the realm of fire (light, the source of all energy). Creation was a mixing of fire and ice - animation and inertia. Manichaeism also is a World Tree tradition, with the same cosmos as the Vedas, the Norse, the Hebrews, the Maya, etc.

If you listen to mel bala and murad on how mani patek created mohamed then read about alot of beliefs and practices in islam which are from manicheanism. The most interesting is Mani claims he went to heaven and brought 5 prayers He claimef to be paraclete messish talked about And claimed he is the sesl of prophets These are over 250 yrs before mohamed The biography of mohamed by ibn ishaq popularises the paraclete as mohamed which mudlim scholars took up. But ibn.ishaq is said to have been s forger fabricator even called dajjal by muslims of his time

@@ericthegreat7805 sorry but you responses are not precise, do you mean to say that nihilism is "to describe reality as it currently stands"? so it'd be a synonym of materialism, or do you mean that nihilism is the dominant ideology? because I'd agree with that, but it has nothing to do with my original comment. if you agree that telos takes someone away from nihilism then that goes against what the OP said of manichaeism , manichaeism has a telos, therefore it goes away from nihilism, in contradiction to the OP's statement that manichaeism is a form of early nihilism.

I've watched more than half your videos and so far this one is the most important. But they are wrong about abstention, they recognize the Light does not spread itself - humanity can only awaken through human effort. This was the downfall of Gnosticism generally
@doomd1816
@doomd1816 2 месяца назад
It fell from being too complicated, and augustine and most philosophers realized that straight dualism is inferior to the “light” being dominant over the dark, plus reincarnation is inferior in terms of convincing people to do what you say compared to the finality of heaven and hell Although i prefer manicheanism
@Larzsolice
@Larzsolice 2 месяца назад
@@doomd1816 If you take the Twelve Labours of Hercules, using the order given by Diodorus Siculus, and swap Labours 6 and 9, they line up perfectly with the 12 Nidanas of Buddhism. While the 12 Nidanas represent 12 Beginnings, the 12 Labours represent 12 Endings (of behaviours that keeps the Soul fixated on physical incarnation). What emerged was such a profoundly simple system of mysticism (defined as direct experience of Soul, an knowledge of such matters). It was so inspiring that I'm writing a book on it. I'm on my last chapter, and the blend between Greek paganism and Buddhist mysticism is so natural that to me it is proof that when a Soul awakens to its own nature, the teachings that arise are only flavoured by the culture in which it arises. It all starts with the Thunderbolt (Vajra).
