In the newest installment of our Manion's Moments series, Kaul Wildflower Garden Curator John Manion is joined by David Butler of Cahaba Riverkeeper to discuss one of Alabama's most iconic plants: the Cahaba lily! But before they discuss this rare aquatic bloom, John shares a wonderful alternative to plant in your home garden. 🌱

I enjoyed the video, I know you say it looks identical, but it would have been nice to see the Cahaba up close.

My pond has two small waterfalls and a short curving stream. Also 25 large gold fish that are spawning regularly among the spider lilies. Water is filtered and stream flows all summer long most of the day. Uses irrigation water that probably changes its entire volume every 15 days.

I have spider lilies growing in my back yard pond. I have had them for 5 years and last year had about 45 blooms. They are completely submerged in water and have never been planted in the ground. I have photos from several years. Could it be a cabana lily? I bring it into a water bath in the garage through the winter after nighttime temps start going below 50 degrees.

Is there a way to submit a photo of a "Cahaba Lily" to you all for verification, or proper identification?

I need to thin out my planting trough. Too many bulbs. How do I do it safely for the plants.

Thank you so much for reaching out, Bobby! We would recommend calling the Alabama Cooperative Extension System to double-check the identity of your plants and how best to care for and thin out the planting. You can reach ACES at 205.879.6964. Thank you for your interest in the Gardens and our educational videos!
