My experience of mansions of madness : 1.) You set the stage, set the mood and setup the tiles 2.) You get involved in the plot and try to figure out the best strategy to complete the mission 3.) Monsters appear and you die
Yep just finished my first game and monsters showed up and I literally had no way to prevent them from killing one of my characters. Her worst ability was speed and if she tried to evade it used speed if she tried to attack it used speed and if she tried to attack it used speed. That just felt like bs honestly. No skill there just luck. The monster literally spawned on her with no warning and no way to prepare
Haha. I can see how that happens. Just played my first game last night. I got crazy lucky with all my combat rolls and beat the hell out of every cultist and monster with a 2x4. Good game!!
I have this game and I have watched a lot of reviews and how to (In Spanish) of this particular game and they all are super difficult to understand. Even tho english isn't my first language, this video was super easy to understand how to play it, so you guys earned a new subscriber.
Thanks so much for joining our community - glad you liked the video Juan!

Agree, this video helps me more than the iberic spanish ones. NOT to mention than anyway I want a try with the local guys on the game store with a tutoring.
I can’t thank you enough for making these videos. When I got the 2nd edition two years ago I almost gave up on it because (to me, being very green to gaming) it was ALOT to learn. I’ve since came to your channel for several other board games because these tutorials are done so flawlessly!!! I’m happy to say that I completed my 2nd edition mansions of madness collection and when I made my RU-vid video on it without hesitation I had to link your video as I could never do as great a job as you’ve done! Thanks again!!
Rodney, you better be planning to do a full playthrough of this one. The legendary Harvey needs to show he's still got it. After all, he's half the reason I subscribed to your awesome channel.
Yeah, it's like the very first video he ever did. Harvey was an amazing hero in that game, and had probably one of the best narrative stories out of any character in a board game they've run since I started watching the channel.
@Giles de Rals if not for that video, i probably wouldn't have subbed to the channel. It was a great start to a great channel. I would love to see a return to where it all began with a brand new version of that amazing game.
Watch It Played has officially come full circle! I was introduced to you Rodney with your playthrough of the original Mansions of Madness. You are still my go to channel hoping there is a playthrough of any game I just bought or plan to buy. Keep up the great work!!!
Played Mansion of Madness yesterday and just wanted to say thank you for this video. It meant that I just rolled up to my local game store and started playing, only having to double check one or two things rather than spending ages reading and trying to learn the rules. Thank you for your hard work.
We have a game play series where we actually play the game. I you're having trouble with the rules, you may find it helpful to watch the first episode of that even, just to see how it all comes together. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3mOgbQ4l_iM.html
best channel to learn the rules. funny, intelligent Rodney and the rest of the gang.no BS included. glad I subscribed and backed on Indiegogo years ago
Thanks for this!!!! My husband and I tried to play today, saying, "Let's play it by ear", which was the stupidest idea ever. I think he had to talk me down from swiping everything off the table at least five or six times. Definitely should have watched this video first!!!!
Fantastic "How to play" episode. Being the one in our gaming group that explain the rules and often play overlord in games such as Descent, Mansion of Madness, Imperial Assault or Mice and Mystics, i find your videos very helpful as i just toss players a link a week before gamenight. Really saves a ton of time.
This is my wife and mine, first board game. Thank you for this guide!! We have been having a blast playing it. We have died each time we have played, but it's still such a fun game!
I'm quite sure Harvey wasn't on top of the conversion kit characters by accident ;) This really takes me back, I've watched the original playthrough of the 1st edition 3 times through and it was my first real board game playthrough I've watched on video. Been a huge fan of Rodney ever since! Keep up the great work!
rodney think you reviews are brilliant, bought this and was worried about the app but its works brilliantly fantastic, the flow and all on the same side, plus stops the hour of set up too . brilliant thanks to your review
I used to watch “how to play” videos in Spanish since it’s my native lang, but damn you are so good explaining such a complicated game like Mansions of Madness that now I’m subscribed to your channel and ready to buy this game. Keep it up!
Wow, Rodney. You actually managed to churn this out! Must have took you a long time to get the app to show the examples, like the puzzles, you wanted to highlight. One could easily go insane making this. Remember to roll a horror check!
Thanks! Heard about this game from a friend. Bought it. Read through the rules. Felt stupid (this was our intro to tabletop games). Watched your video, and will continue to reference it. Super informative, and incredibly well organized. This reduced the learning curve so much.
So nice to know this was helpful Evan - and while it might have presented some challenges at first, I hope you have a fantastic time with the game. This is one I've played a lot, but it's got quite a bit happening for your first tabletop game. That said, once you master it, you'll have an excellent base of board game knowledge under your belt!
Played this with my friend and my brother yesterday and man, i wish i would have watched this video before we did. While we played mostly correct, i noticed quiet a few things we messed up or didnt do 100% right. Awesome video
The first MoM always interested me, but if I was going to have a "DM" game it was going to be an RPG so I never broke into it. I am torn on the App though if it will be fun to play with so I think I will wait till we get the playthrough before breaking down on this one.
first time u reviewed mansions , I bought it, and now because of Ai and for of war effect, and possibility to implement older games , game becomes much easier to prepare and finally additional player is not required to be master and also u can go solo,
Excellent video, this really helped a lot. Thank you, and please continue making learning videos with this format. This is probably the most helpful teaching video I've watched, and I have watched quite a few. I also love the way FFG did the Learn to play, and rules reference books in the 2nd edition of this game.
Sorry, but I cannot understand this frase on the "Evade Action" section. It says "If an investigator in a monster’s space attempts to move out of the monster’s space voluntarily or perform any action other than the attack action or move action, that investigator must resolve an evade check against the monster in his space." I mean, if an investigator moves out of the monster space, he must perform an Evade Action, but it also says "other than the attack action or move action", so he doesn't need to perform an Evade Action?... This is weird....Thank you!
That appears to be a bit of a typo. You don't have to perform an evade check if you attack the monster, but anything else (including choosing to move out of its space), requires an evade check.
Hello Rodney, I have just entered this world of boardgames and I already love this channel. Excellent explanations and humor!! Can I ask you (and implore) please, do an Eldritch Horror How to Play and Gameplay. There is a new expansion coming second quarter this year, I think it would be good timing. Thank you so much for your dedication, it makes the difference!!
So sorry I never replied to you Rennacius - well, better later than never? First off, thanks for the kind words. I never did get around to an Eldritch Horror tutorial (so many games, so little time). Did you end up playing that expansion?
Wow. This didn't even felt like 30 minutes had passed. Outstanding work on the script and delivery, and editing. And I don't even have the game, I just watched for fun hahaha
I love seeing this on your channel. I have to agree with other comments that this is very nostalgic and it just feels right to have you go over the 2nd Edition.
This is an excellent and well informed video. it is much better going through this than their book as the way it is written, some rules are a bit ambiguous. I can't wait to play this game as I got it for my birthday last week! :):) I need to paint the figures though!! haha
@@WatchItPlayed awesome! thank you for responding to an old video! :):) Im just going through the Mansions of Madness gameplay videos - you two are brilliant and I'm enjoying having you on! Thank you again, and hopefully I won't die too much haha
This must bring u much nostalgia. :) it certainly does for me... Cant believe its been this long and to imagine i only owned like 4 board games at the time before i got hooked on ur channel... :)
I am very glad to see both the actual release of the second edition, and you're How To Play video. Ever since stumbling upon your play through of the first edition last years, I've been excited to try the game for myself. However the complexity of the original, along with the Keeper player requirement, always kept my group from taking the plunge. The new edition is a wonderful direction for players like myself, and I hope that these changes won't prevent you from gaining as much enjoyment from this new edition as you did from the first.
Thanks Rodney for the really in-depth overview of Mansions of Madness. It is now on my Christmas list :) I'm really curious to see how the app side of the game gels with the tabletop side. Space Cowboys have done a great job of integrating technology with their Unlock games. I can't wait for Dec. 25th :) Rockin!
My son loved Betrayal and I though this might be similar. Thank you for this video! My house is full of visual/ hands on learners and I think we can finally attempt to play the game.
I must have played the 1st edition because although i loved the game there was a lot going on and i was nervous about bringing it into rotation with the responsibility of knowing what to do on my shoulders haha but the tablet componant seems to simplify it
Great tutorial as always!! Its come full circle for you and the channel Rodney with the first episodes I watched being for the original Mansions of Madness and now the second edition haha. This has become a favourite of the group, we stream the app to a tv via laptop and it works great. Really creates a fun RPG like experience!
Getting this game second hand (without any organization from the previous owners) was really difficult. But I think I've got a good handle on the game. Me and my family will be able to play tommorow for our little board game hang out
Got this for my birthday 😊 cause I couldn't stop stop! Thank you so much for this video! I'm definitely coming back to your video because you really help!!!! Happy spring!
I found some instructions about darkness not being able to move 2 steps or do any puzzle or in order to do a puzzle or search action you need to spend 1 movement then do the action. But in edition 2 doesn't refer to anything of the mentioned above, so my questions are: 1. Can you move and resolve a puzzle when moving in a dark area? 2. Can you do 2 steps when moving in a dark area?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
How do you know which investigator goes first and which investigator you’re using during the investigator phase? For example if we have five people playing how do we know who’s gone and who has not as well as which character is doing the search
Hi Michael, this is covered in the video - during the investigator phase, players choose the order their turns are taken in. If you're having trouble remembering who has gone, just rotate their character card sideways after taking a turn.
Thanks Rodney! I was a huge fan of the first chapter of "Mansion"... I will put this game on my list and add the first game to the second edition. Love your channel.
This video was awesome, started playing with some friends today and as the first type of this game we play it was confusing and watching this we missed a few things 😂
5 minutes in: "And that's the setup." Me: "Sold!" I remember extremly long setups from 1st edition. The game didn't hit the table as much just because of that. Here's hoping FFG brings enough copies to Essen, so I can try and buy one.
If you as game master prepare the scenario, you could even setup it in up to 10 minutes. You have to build your item stacks and order them already, so that you only have to place them after setting up the map. While doing this, the investigators can choose their characters. This is how I always did it. So at least you have to decide which scenario you are going to play and this only works for one scenario per session. But since our sessions most times last 2-4 hours, that should be alright.
Wow this must be the best tutorial video i've ever seen. Thanks alot. I've played this game a couple of times already. And thanks to this clip i realized of some mistakes we were making.
So here is a question my wife, friends and I can't answer. When the mythos event says "affects the player with the most will" but we have the same amount, who does it apply to? Is this one of the cases where we can decide who or is it to us both? Bought this game because of you a we are loving it. Keep up the awesome work! You're my go to guy for board games.
There will be two more in the near future, as already disclosed by the publisher. And as far as I remember they will be for free. But I'm sure they will also release some more as DLC (it's Fantasy Flight after all...)
Question! When it comes to horror checks, what do you mean by "in range"? Also, it says things like affecting playing with highest damage, but what if nobody has any damage?
Hey Blargle, you'll find range defined here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a2dsq2GsMSs.htmlm17s - range is a generic term in this game that doesn't just apply to attacking. It means anything within 3 spaces (but not through doors/walls). In a case where no one has any damage, then the players are "tied" for highest damage (0 each) and you would resolve ties as described (players choose).
The only question I was left with was how to resolve it if it says you take 2 facedown damage and suffer 1 horror (will negates). Does will negate both? Or just the horror? If it's both, do you decide how to negate it if you roll a 2? i choose to negate both damage but suffer the horror, or negate the horror and suffer one damage? Thank you for the clear walkthrough of this game! We discovered some things we've been doing wrong (such as monster movement. We always just left it in the room it was in since there was an explorer)
Hi Rodney, I have a few questions about the rules and I hope you know the answers. -May I cast a spell that doesn't include the word "action" whenever I want or am I limmited to a phase (incestigator's or mythos phase)? -When the "feed the mind spell" says that investigators within range are focused does this mean that they can change the clue tokens to success only in investigator's phase or to the mythos phase too? Does this spell counts in darkness or not? -When an investigator and a monster are in a room with a darkness token could the investigator attack the monster with a ranged weapon? Is there any difference if the investigator was outsice the room with the monster and the darkness token? -About the horror check, when an investigator is in range but there is no LOS with the monster - let's say the monster is in a room and the investigator is in a hallway 1 space away from the door- does the investigator has to make a horror check or not?
1) Do you have an example spell in mind? If it doesn't say Action, it will typically give an indication of when it can be used. 2) The effect applies anytime you would roll dice. 3) Darkness does not affect attacking a monster in your room. If you are outside the room, you can't attack with a ranged weapon, as you can't attack through doors. 4) No.
For start I can't thank you enough for your immediate respone. Now as an example of a spell not having the word "action" I could say the "feed the mind" spell. It doesn't mention when you are supposed to cast it so could it be when another invastigator is performing his actions? Could it be right at the start of mythos phase in order to impove the test to come or before the horror checks? As far as the darkness conserned, when a monster is inside a room with darkness and the investigator in front of room's door but in another room and 2 spaces away from the monster (straight or diagonally) could he fire his firearm if he has no light source with him?
The Feed The Mind spell effect starts with the word "Action". That means you can only do it on your turn, as an action. In your darkness example, the darkness doesn't factor in, because if they are in different rooms, they are not in range of each other. You can't shoot through doors (even ones you've already explored though. Just pretend that the characters always close the door when they enter and exit a room, if that helps). That said, darkness doesn't impact weapons.
We already tried it once and we actually won, but after this vid I see we got some rules wrong 😅 But I still have one question: when we attack a monster with a weapon, do we have to discard it afterwards? Thanks for the great explanation!
Paul Simister Me too. Played two games and lost both miserably. The biggest problem of the game as I see it now is longevity. Replaying same scenarios is not that fun. Even though the game randomizes houses and things you can still guess what the outcome of some of your actions will be and that kind of ruins the excitement as it removes some of the unknown factor.
I may be making a big deal out of something rather simple. For some reason I still find 'within range' confusing'. I know it mentions that it is not counted through door or walls, so basically if you are on the same tile you will be within range?
Sort of. I mean, I think you have the right idea in your head, but I can't really say yes to your specific example because if you are on the same tile, but one character is in a closed off room with just a door and another player is in a closed off adjacent room and they are adjacent - then no, they are not in range, because the walls and doors block the range. "In range" just means up to 3 spaces away (not counting the starting space), so long as you don't have the target closed off behind a wall or door, etc.
Hey, Rodney. You said, that fire cannot spread through solid walls. But reading the Rules Reference, I thought it can. The rules for "Fire" say: ... • If one or more spaces contain Fire, place one Fire token in a space adjacent to a space that contains Fire. ... And the rules for "Adjacent" say: ... Two spaces are adjacent if they share a border, a door, an impassable border, or a wall. Or have I missed a rule that says something different?
A good question! The spaces are adjacent but "Effects" that "affect adjacent" spaces cannot affect spaces adjacent through walls unless an effect specifically allows it, and fire does not specifically allow it.
