Manta ray, a giant of the ocean

New Atlantis WILD

Swimming next to a manta ray is a great privilege, because she is one of the giants of the ocean, the manta rays can measure eight meters and weigh 1400 kilograms, recently we learned that they are family of sharks.
We know very little about the manta ray, they are a mystery, because they can't live in an aquarium. The greatest danger to the manta ray is the fishing harpoon. But the manta rays are still a really mistery.

20+ years ago on Maui, I unconsciously swam into a "nest" of rays and got chased. Now I understand they were mating & that's why they "flew" out of the water. I almost died laughing from the event, swimming furiously and laughing! No offense meant, rays!

I'm just back from a sail to Lady Eliot Island in the Great Barrier Reef QLD which has 170 resident manta rays. I was dropped in the middle of an area that had many manta rays. As we were snorkelling my buddy and I were approached by 7 large manta rays. They swam past 4 times and the last time the boldest swam straight at us mouth open and deftly missed us by less than 1 metre returning to its course at the surface then swam off. We were hanging in the water as still as we could so as not to startle them and they startled us!! They were very inquisitive and bold in the way they swam up to us and kept returning to us.

Why not? We can take the piss and critique everything else, why should religion get a free pass? If anything it should be one of the most heavily criticised things in society, religion shouldn't be given a safe space. We shouldn't encourage critical thinking, progress and innovation but then turn around and say "oh no this is special, turn off your brain when it comes to this topic". If you put your opinion or god etc into the public arena then you have to be prepared to take the criticisms and the challenges

^well said, if god or religion rly create peace then why is it harmful for people to debate on it ;) , basically self-claim absolute/arrogant wont create peace

Sometimes when I lived in Florida, we’d get out of the water because when there wings flap up in the water they look like sharks diving up and down. It’s really cool to see them

On my first ever recreational dive outside of certification a Giant manta appeared next to us out of the canyon at Los Arcos. By far the coolest thing I have ever experienced.
