Funny story a friend told me about many years ago. A 60 something Chevy was towed into the shop with a no start condition. The car was owned by a little old lady. The spark plugs were all black and fuel soaked. The mechanic cleaned the plugs and the car fired up and ran great. He checked the carburetor, distributor cap, rotor, wires etc. Everything looked fine. Test drove the car and all was right with the world. A week later the Chevy returns on the tow truck with the same condition. The mechanic rebuilt the carburetor, installed new plugs and test drove. Car ran like a top. A week later here comes the Chevy again on the hook. Plugs are fouled. The mechanic was baffled. He had fired the parts cannon by this point and still the car fouled plugs. Finally the mechanic decided to go for a ride with the lady. She seated herself behind the wheel. Inserted the key in the ignition. Pulled a knob out of the dashboard and hung her pocket book on the knob. She then fired up the car and was ready to drive off. The mechanic immediately saw what the problem was. The little old lady had recently lost her husband. He did most of the driving. She was pulling out the choke knob and using it as a convenient place to hang her pocket book. She was driving around with the choke fully engaged! The mechanic explained to her how to properly use the choke and no more fouled plugs.

That sounds like a very possible scenario and his story proves it's possible! lol

In the 1970s it was an urban myth that lady drivers would pull choke out, then hang their handbags on them.

lol, that might have been true at the time.

thanks for the video Jimmy. Our 87 R10 actually has a manual choke because James could not get the (much older) engine he installed in it to connect properly with the electric. That was multiple years ago, we needed the truck right away at the time and never did go back and modify it.

Oh yeah, today we could fix that right up! The manual choke works great too, as long as we remember it and aren't distracted by our phones, not a concern back in the day, haha.

like fouling out the spark plugs ! I remember doing a tune-up every year on my rebuilt Pontiac 400 T/A with a 750 holey double pump. with ram air 3 heads! gas mileage 8 mpg 🤦‍♂️ and only 380hp 410tq . we thought that was good for 1994 compared to the mustangs and firebird s and imports at the time .

Those were great engines for the time! Back then raw power was what a muscle car did best. I had two GTO's and if I had the money I'd get another, it's my favorite car! With todays technology, we could do some minor head work an updated cam and make 450 hp and 500 ft lbs pretty easily!

In 1978 my 1967 Firebird could pull the front tires off the ground. 396 bored to 409, 11:1 pistons, Muncie m21. Had to chain the engine to the frame so it didn't destroy the solid motor mounts. I don't know what the hp, or torque was, but it was a monster. I bought it like that from my buddy for $400.
