MANURE OR FERTILIZER FOR FOOD PLOTS

In this video I discuss using manure vs synthetic fertilizer to feed the plants growing in our food plots. Manure has some great soil building benefits, such as increases organic matter, porosity, and soil tilth, but also some big issues to look into, such as low nutrient analysis, pathogen and disease concerns with fresh manure, and difficulty handling large volumes that are needed without specialized equipment. Synthetic fertilizers are widely used because of the ease of spreading, they are readily available, and come with many different nutrient analysis where we can better match the fertilizer applied with the needs of the soil test. Food plots require large amounts of nutrients, and if these nutrients are low or not available in the soil we must add them. Corn soybeans, alfalfa, clover, wheat, rye, oats, turnips, radish, sun hemp, and lab-lab all require nutrients in order to grow and become a high quality food source for whitetail deer.

Great video! I’m putting out some pellitized chicken manure on my turf farms as a cheap additive. Cost is 150.00 a ton delivered only 3 miles, analysis is a very low 2-4-2. Putting out 800lbs per acre, will mainly be a good shot of P&K which gets hauled off every time we harvest the turf. Wouldn’t dare putting on my foodplots it stinks to bad😀

Hey Wes, could you do a food plot video on if corn needs to be dried down before freezing weather and how to choose the right days to maturity? As well as any other considerations when looking for corn for deer?

Sure can! Thank you for the idea, I’ll try to get that video out soon. Thanks for watching

Cow Manure will be more Digested than Horse or Hog Manure, Chicken and Trurkey Manure will have the least weeds, horses will have the most. One of the best is Sheep or Buffalo. Goat Manure has very few weeds but may contain crazy stuff. PH. also has to be tested when adding Manure, most Manures are acidic in nature.

Thanks for sharing Caroll, I’ve heard some horror stories about the weed seeds in cow and horse manure. Thanks for watching

My concern on the pelletized materials would be whether or not they include biosolids (ie composted solid material from waste treatment plant). The EPA admits that biosolids can include chemicals and heavy metals (arsenic, lead, chromium, mercury, etc) and even has allowable limits which they've changed. Neither composting method (sludge incinerator or windrowing) removes heavy metals and I'm skeptical on the testing. Biosolids are not something I'd put on my land. If the pelletized product is biosolid free then it's an interesting product for food plot fields.

Wow, Plot Professor...never knew you were also a Poo-ologist. Thanks for "dropping" this instructional video...this information sure does take a "load" off all the pushing and straining to get some relief in understanding. Thanks for "wiping" the confusion away!! lol

How does PTO spreader work on power lime?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Месяц назад
It’s not great, but it does work. Key is to not overload the lime in the spreader, more just packs it down more, use fresh lime that hasn’t been rained out, and keep a hammer handy to tap on it when it stops flowing. I really didn’t have a huge problem with it, granted it wasn’t a lot of fun but I did get all I needed spread on the food plot with one.
