As a hardcore cynic and critic I have to say . . . I've watched a bunch of Tim Pierce's videos and while no two people will ever agree 100% I must admit Tim has earned my respect and admiration, and as an amateur intermediate guitar player who has been playing for nearly 50 years I've certainly learned a few things. I wish I had time to take the Master Class but I already know I'm too busy for the rest of this year . . . these videos provide nice little breaks.

I used to enjoy recording on the digital 4/8 tracks cause I couldn’t see where I was on the beat and just went with feel. If there was clash, we’d do things like bury an acoustic in the mix and it’d just fill out the sound. It was an ear puzzle, not an eye puzzle.

And, the reason we Do have to think about it.. is that we don't want to mute strings we Want to hear, like in chords. So. It doesn't happen overnight. I should know..

This was a very timely video. I am getting back into recording after some years. When I look at the grid, I can see that I am slightly ahead or after the beat a little at times. My ears tell me that it's good, but the grid makes me think it needs to be redone or (gasp) edited. To watch a player like yourself interact with Protools was very enlightening.

I have used True Temperament frets for nearly ten years. They are fantastic. They feel almost like regular frets under the fingers, and you can play chords anywhere on the neck without warble or unpleasantness. It’s only drawbacks: 1- price! 2- can’t easily retrofit an old instrument

One reason I think so many struggle with this is that when first learning we are taught to put our fingers onto the strings perfectly straight down, so as NOT to hit/mute the adjacent strings. To mute as Tim shows (and millions have later learned) you need to "collapse" your fingers onto the adjacent strings which many of us were taught is sloppy/lazy hand position. Of course, nothing is "sloppier" than un-muted strings!

Realization of that has improved my playing. Your analysis is so valuable in that, and so many other respects. I learned a lot about muting in the late 1960s when I would come home from school, plug my guitar into whatever fuzz/overdrive I had and crank my little amp. If I didn't mute correctly, all kinds of nastiness happened. I regard muting as a 'defensive' strategy. (edited to correct intoxicated typing)

The guitar I learned on was a Yamaha Acoustic and, I played it almost exclusively for hours a day for a couple of years before I got my first electric. I was 15 and I'm 50 now but, I still remember how much difficulty I had simply keeping it from making unwanted sounds! Acoustic guitars are forgiving when it comes to strings ringing out unwantedly but , I had to learn so much by trial and error just to keep the thing quiet. I'd been playing songs like Black Dog by Zeppelin on acoustic. What a thrill to hear it with some dirt on it but, yeah the noise I had to learn to control it. I wish I'd have had this video back then but, it's still worth paying attention to for me now. I'm reminded of Hendrix being criticized for his timing, as if he didn't have a good sense of it, but I'm of the opinion he was playing just a little ahead or behind the beat the way Tim shows here. It wasn't his timing being poor, and if drummers had difficulty playing with him I think they could have benefited from a video such as this. As always I love Tim's enthusiasm. Tim I love how much you love the guitar man! It's written all over your face every time I see you playing. It's play right? Not work, nobody WORKS the guitar huh? 😂 Another important topic, you're so in tune with what beginners need to hear , you haven't forgotten what it was like. Keep up the good work, I love you're choice of picks too. I like a less than heavy pick for rhythm too. I've gotta try a sharp tip for leads , I know when mine wear down it effects my playing a lot. Great video man!✌️🎸🎵🎶🙏

Love your videos, even if I don't comment on them... I comment too much :) Glad to hear an esteemed guitarist here on the RU-vids talking about pocket. I'm on that lifelong journey learning jazz guitar. You'd think that pocket would be a key topic for jazz guitar, but many of us get too caught up with the notes that we forget pocket and rhythm. Barry Greene does a similar demonstration with DAW (?) Anyway, very cool topic. Thank you for stressing rhythm--any excuse for u amateur guitarist to focus on rhythm is gold in my book. Another tidbit I am learning right now is to always know where the DOWNBEAT is, no matter what--even if you don't play it all the time. Goes for jazz, blues, funk, rock, metal, classical, kinda universal almost. Keep on the keeping of the on, Mr. Pierce!

Hi, thank you for the advice and guide, yes, as much as possible: double muting unnecessary, with the same hand or both hands to ensure the cleanest sounding notes. Oh, new thing to learn, keep playing, even rake when not playing a guitar part during a song, keeps you in rhythm to ensure and practice, "in the pocket". Take care.

I've often thought there should be an agreement in the guitar world that a refret shouldn't affect the value of a guitar. Unless it's some historical relic, like Jimi's Monterey Strat or something, why have it if it doesn't play as a decent guitar should? Nobody expects a '63 Corvette split-window coupe to have it's original spark plugs or take a 30% hit if a tie-rod or muffler was replaced. Those are expected to wear out. So are frets.

Great stuff Tim. If you are worried about tubes buy an Axe Fx, no tubes required, no audio interface required, no huge pedal board, and all the associated problems or hissing roaring amps. Let face it, all the so-called expert blind tests can't tell the difference, or if they can they usually get it wrong quoting that they thought the modeler was the REAL AMP because it sounded better. The ultimate for quality sound, reliability, and quite recording! Add it to big power amp and FRFR speaker cab and the world is your oyster! No one (nearly) drives Model T Fords anymore, technology moves on for the better! Just my opinion.

I knew what this was going to be about before I clicked on it! I always struggle with left hand string noise, particularly with vibrato.

At the risk of telling you something you already know.... You can't always mute the strings next to a vibratoed (is that a word?) note with your fretting hand. Since the finger vibratoing(?) the note is sometimes touching strings above the rest of the hand, the fretting hand cannot mute them. When I do vibrato I use my pick hand fingers, the ones not holding the pick, to mute. I will mute the low-E and sometimes the A with my fretting hand thumb, and sometimes mute the high-E with the side of my index finger; but it's the pick hand fingers that keep things quiet, especially on the strings adjacent to the string I'm doing vibrato on. Sometimes I can't mute with my pick hand fingers as I pick the note, but very soon after picking it. If I try to mute at the same moment I pick the string I am vibratoing I sometimes mute that string by mistake, so I mute the adjacent strings just after picking the note. This can add an interesting attack to a note, making it more complex harmonically, as long as you mute the adjacent strings before they are perceived as an actual note. (Unless that's the effect you are going for. Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan (and many others) are known for letting the strings next to a bent or vibratoed note ring a bit for a dirty or noisy sound when they were going for a nasty kind of feel.) Sometimes when I'm doing a wide vibrato I actually push/pull the adjacent strings away from the vibratoed string, to give me more room and a clean sound for the vibrato. I'm still working on this, it takes planning and concentration. I hope it will become more natural and reflexive over time. Again, this often happens just after I pick the vibratoed note.

@@jeffbower8355 Thanks, Jeff. It’s something I wasn’t even conscious of to begin with but as you add more gain it becomes way more obvious. I’ll definitely try out some of your tips.

@@Jimthehumanoid Thanks Jamie. The other part of muting that I didn’t mention is palm muting. (Again, you likely know about this but I’ll offer some specifics.) You don’t so much use your palm as you use the base of your thumb. I mostly mute the lower strings (lower in pitch) this way. So if I’m playing a note on the 2nd string (B in standard tuning) and doing vibrato upward (toward the G string, as there isn’t much room to do vibrato down toward the high-E string), I mute the lower 3 strings (low-E, A and D) with my ‘palm,’ that is, the base of my thumb. Immediately after picking the B string and bending it up a step and beginning vibrato, I place the side of my picking hand thumb on the G string to keep it quiet, while resting the third and fourth fingers of my picking hand on the high-E string. I just did this and realized that in addition to resting the base of my thumb on the lower 3 strings I also rest the side of my picking hand thumb on the lower strings. This gives me two methods of damping, which is very useful if you are moving around much. When I decide to ‘act like a rock star’ and push the guitar toward the audience, or lift the neck high, or do a spin, one of my muting methods may fail, so having two methods is safer. An additional challenge is to do all of this without adding unnecessary tension in either hand. Tension is the enemy of speed and precision, so remain aware of any unneeded tension. I sometimes practice very slowly so that I can pay attention to everything at once: total tension of each hand, where the tension is (palm, wrist, fingers, forearm, jaw, doing the ‘guitar solo face’ - this should not be tense, it’s showmanship). Some players tense their feet … all of this reduces speed and precision. That’s a lot to pay attention to at the same time so slow practice can reveal issues I need to work on. The other approach is attention rotation. Play the lick or note over and over at normal speed and on each play through pay attention to one thing. Do this regularly and you will be better able to monitor yourself while playing, even while playing live.

I hear Bo Diddley’s ‘Postman’s Knock’ there Tim. One of the two fundamental riffs of rock ‘n’ roll >> rock.
