I made a custom maple box for a deck of playing cards. The wood looks beautiful, but I have a way to make it POP! This video shows how I made this and my key tip to making the figure in wood really come to life.

Years ago, I was asked by a teacher to come up with a wood box to hold cards he used in his lessons. Since the project is small, I could use the best looking wood I available to me. That woodworking project was way before I started RU-vid so I recreated it to show a crazy finishing process that enhances the look of the project. This box is fairly simple to construct, but there’s some fun woodworking elements in it. Even if you aren’t a huge card player, give this wood box project a shot. It will boost your skills and give you something beautiful to show off.

Simple, elegant, and practical. I bet some Magic The Gathering players would love something like this for a deck holder.

I ordered the plans and made it myself. I wish I had the jigs to make it safer lol. The tolerances were extremely small; I am very happy with the product though.

I'm pretty much a hand tool guy. I have a table saw that gets used when i don’t want to cut long rips, and am askinng Santa for a band saw. The only other power tools I have are a drill/driver and a random orbit sander. Taha t gathers more dust than it makes as I prefer a super smoother plane for finish-ready surfaces. Neither a virtue nor a vise. Yours is the only power tool channel I follow because of videos like this.

Similar workflow here. My last few project I haven’t touched my table saw, I’ll even rip on my bandsaw since it’s is quieter and more pleasant to use. A couple quick passes with a hand plane gives me a nice finish. I really like this channel and his bespoke boxes and the scale of his work. I have a scrap that is perfect for this, and my next project will be making one of these for my kid’s Magic the Gathering Cards.

I know I have a lot of tools but I try to not use every single one when building a project. I don't hold back on using the tool I want but I try to keep the project as straight forward as possible. I want them to be accessible to a large audience of makers who simply want to build cool stuff.

Wipe on poly and wipe off excess. My go to method as well. I also use a brown paper bag to polish after the last coat.
@glenb1972
@glenb1972 Год назад
How many coats do you wipe on and wipe off and do you just rub with a paper bag and that's it?
@jeffkowalski4936
@jeffkowalski4936 Год назад
@@glenb1972 first coat very wet to raise grain. Lightly sand 220. Apply second and third light coats with less than light sanding in between. Buff with crumpled paper bag or Kraft paper. I think the term “burning in” is the technique. No expert here, I just get good results 95% of the time.

Incredible work! My family is a bit addicted to playing cards, so this would be an awesome gift! I love the way you explain the process and your sense of humor, I'm new to the channel but I'll stay for a very long time, great work! And that wood? Absolutely beautiful, I've never seen something like that, it's stunning! Best wishes from Brazil!

Thanks for making this video. I bought your plans and ended up making 20 of these boxes for stocking stuffers and gifts for friends. For variety, I made 5 of each in maple, walnut, sapele and red cedar and finished them with Osmo PolyX oil. They turned out great - thanks for inspiring me to make them and keep the videos coming!

Your channel has started me down the rabbit hole of making small bespoke boxes. I’m excited to try this one for my kid’s Magic The Gathering cards. I really appreciate the scale of your projects, they’re at a scale that I can actually squeeze into life. One question, was there reason you did rabbets instead of mitered corners? I’m just trying to learn and understand when to choose which corner joint. Is that a decision based on strength since it’s a small box?
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes Год назад
Miters would be beautiful. I haven't used rabbets in a while so I went with those. Miters aren't as strong but rabbets aren't incredibly strong either. It's just a card box so no biggie.

Chainsaw milled. Someone cut down a tree and it looked almost spiral. I went over and sliced me off a bit of that sweet sweet spirally maple.

Very nice! Also, good timing. I’m about to finish some birdseye maple and want to use the same technique. What grit did you sand to? And, after the stain, what grit(s) did you use? Thanks!

I used 220 grit for both phases.

You made me think...when's the last project in which I used wood from this same board? And it was the drill box! The lid was from pieces of this same maple. I didn't dye that one. If I remembered this I would have shown it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-McDPccms9DQ.html

@LarryB-inFL
@LarryB-inFL Год назад
Interesting to use dye like that. Ok, I know "Opinions are like assholes", but I used to use Minwax poly, thinned to wipe-on...then switched to the waaay more expensive Arm-R-Seal satin, because everyone said to, and used it for a while. Yeah, goes on well, but I never really felt like I was getting any better outcome. And since it is already a wipe-on, it basically is half as much coverage per quart...or twice as much cost. Saw a review recently that basically said the same thing as I had observed. I am pretty sure I am not buying any more $30+/qt Arm-R-Seal!
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes Год назад
I get it completely. I think it often comes down to an aspect of a particular finish the person likes. Could be how it applies, dries, etc. I use a ton of different ones.

Nice project. However, please don't go down that rabbit (puns!) hole of click bait titles. What ever you gain in the short term will hurt you in the long term. Keep up the great work 👍
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes Год назад
I truly didn't set out for click bait. I felt like the title goes with the thumbnail text, and many woodworkers do not use this finishing method. Half the video is dedicated to the finish and results thereof. I typically change my titles and thumbnails at least once anyway.
