The MAP sensor is a main input to the ECM or engine computer. The MAP sensor measures the difference in air pressure between the intake manifold and atmospheric pressure. 2000 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8t It is located on the side mount inter cooler, if it's bad the car will start up with no problem, but sometimes the car will die when you touch the throttle, power loss, revs will not pass 3500 to 4000 RPM in certain gears, horrible gas mileage. i thought it was a vacuum leak but it was MAP sensor well worth checking.

@bikr1975 If it doesn't have a MAP then it has a MAF sensor. In that year there were no dual sensor vehicles. So, if it had a MAF it had no MAP. Newer vehicles may have both. The Extra MAP is used to check for EGR operation. Thanks for posting...

@JFIdelH Disconnect the MAP and run the vehicle that way. With MAP disconnected slowly goose throttle. You'd have poor performance, but it'll determine if MAP's the issue. Another test is to disconnect EGR valve vacuum hose. If the EGR valve test solves your problem post back for the solution. Keep posting....

No, you need a 5 volt regulated voltage and a sensor ground to test it. Often, some MAP sensors FORD output a frequency, not a changing voltage. Thanks for posting.

Does a bad MAP sensor cause bogging/jerking during acceleration on a manual tranmission car? I have a 98 accord lx 5 speed and it is bogging/jerking. My CEL(Check engine light) is on for high/low voltage for MAP sensor. Please reply as soon as possible, thanks :)

Can you test a MAP sensor's funtionality by measuring the resistance between the signal wire and reference wire on the sensor while pulling a vacuum on the sensor? (with the sensor completely out of the vehicle). I am asking because I tried this and got no change in resistance when I pulled a vacuum on the sensor. In my situation, the only way to measure signal voltage would be if I spliced into the wire which I'd prefer not to do. Thanks for any help or advice.

I don't understand why "reference voltage" phrase is being widely used. This is not a reference voltage. This is a power supply for the god damned sensor. A reference would be atmospheric pressure in this case.

It is reference voltage as well as supply voltage. It is also reference ground. That's what is called, whether you like it or not. And God has nothing to do with it.
