In this video I’ll show you how to use scan data and service information to diagnose a P0106 MAP/BARO Pressure Circuit Out of Range code on a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Reading and understanding the code information, as well as the Snap-On Troubleshooter, were key in repairing this fault. I also demonstrate how to safely clean an electronic throttle body, a very common feature on modern vehicles of all makes.
This false MAP sensor trouble code caused by a dirty throttle body in not unique to the Trailblazer. I have also seen this problem with other model GM vehicles as well.
Engine Performance Diagnostics chapter 20 pages 2 - 4, 12-14
Symptoms
- check engine light
- possible low idle, stalling
Fix
- cleaning and relearning the electronic throttle body

One more thumbs up and thank you! 2009 VW Touran 1.4 TSi, engine shakes and stutters at 2000-2200RPM, sometimes shows "Engine fault" with ECP light on, P0106 and P0108 can be read (restarting the engine clears the ECP). (So far I thought) expert (not official) VW service (after reading the error codes for 2 hours): the car is OK, nothing wrong, however the clutch is worn so we could replace it for a good price... My throttle body was far less dirty than in the video, so I was a bit worried that it's gonna be something else, but the car runs great now without any sign of the problem.

Hi Scanner. You helped me hugely a few years ago with my 94 Chevy Silverado. Learned Alot. Now i have an issue with a 98 Sebring JXI 2.5 Mitsubishi engine. Been in storage for almost 10 years. Ran it every summer. Finally got itback on the road. I should have remembered your procedures and checks. But i overlooked them. Have severe stumbling. Bogging down on throttle. Wont hold idle well. I changed out the fuel pump and filter. Cleaned out the tank. Cleaned injectors with intake cleaner plugged into the fuel line. Ran great until warmup. Then stalled. I could barely get it up and running. Just peddling the throttle with my foot to inch my way home. Engine light didn't come on but the scan tool did show the PO 106. And something about BARO reading. Im going to study and learn from your video and hopefully figure this problem out. I have an older scan tool so hopefully i can get into detailed data as like on your machine. I'll let you know how it goes. Great Video by the way 👍👍👍

Cleaned Throttle Body thoroughly. Map sensor voltages are where they should be. Still stumbling. Wont hold proper idle. Throttle position angle still around 21%. Need guidance please. 😁

This procedure worked perfectly for me! My 2004 Trailblazer (6 cylinder) Service Engine Soon light came on. The code was P0106 (MAP Sensor). 1,000 miles later the engine intermittently started surging up and down at idle, sometimes stalling. I finally changed the MAP Sensor ($35 at Pep Boys) and disconnected the battery to clear out the Service Engine Soon light. As soon as I started the engine, the light came back on and the engine RPM started surging again. I researched the problem and found this video about the Throttle Body Position. I removed the throttle body and thoroughly cleaned it with Carb/Throttle Body Cleaner and paper towels. I reassembled everything and fired the engine up. The light stayed out and the engine ran like a top. No problems since. The cleaning process only took about 30-45 minutes, start to finish. I disconnected the battery, removed the plastic intake canister on top of the engine, then removed the 4 bolts to remove the Throttle Body from the intake manifold. This made the cleaning process MUCH easier and more thorough. THANKS for the video! colorado_kyle@hotmail.com

Liking this one! I had two cars the last week setting a MAP code and it turned out to be dirty throttle plates. The first one: a Audi A2 with a map code and a air leak code. No air leaks were found and the throttle unit was totally clogged up becasue of the egr port sitting just below the plate. The code has not return yet after a couple days, it would otherwise set after a short testdrive. The second car was a Volvo V70, 2004. It was setting a map code after driving about 10km. After cleaning the throttle unit (bosch on this car) it did not return after a 30 km testdrive. I remembered this video when I was troubleshooting those car and I must say that they are great! keep up the good work. /Stefan

Well DONE !!!! I had a P0106 and SERVICE STABILITRAK and SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL on my 2013 Silverado. Replaced the MAP cuz mechanics said so. Took it to Chev dealer and they wanted to charge me $140 bucks to diagnose. They then said it was cuz of the large cold air intake. The cold air intake had been on several months and just started acting up 2 weeks ago. Before then it had a K&N Stock replacement oiled Hi Perf square air filter. I followed you observations and yup. Dirty as hell throttle body. Oil in there from obviously the square OILED REPLACEMENT K&N filter that I put on since the truck was new. I cleaned it all out and the truck idles smoother and no more P0106. THANKS !!!!!!

I ran into this same exact problem today except I didn't have a MAP sensor code. Thanks to this video I knew what to check first. I was working on a 07 trailblazer then the MIL came on when I drove out of the shop. The Tech2 showed a code for low idle speed. Indicated angle was 25% at idle so the first thing I did was check the throttle and it was dirty. After cleaning indicated angle at idle went down to 9%. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Paul

This worked perfectly for my 2010 sonata gls no more pesky check engine light! big ups for making this video I was starting to get frustrated with this car. but now I'm back on the road!

I have to say this is the best info ive ever seen walked through about a specific issue like this. This was in my recommended and im a mechanic of 19 years and have seen this exact problem 100s of times with used car dealers bringing in auction trailblazers with idle surge, this 0106 code or in the later 06+ maf trucks they normally get idle codes or random emission codes as well. Very rarely does cleaning the tb not actually remedy this. One piece of info again in the MAF based 06+ models is that once your throttle hits 25% at idle from being caked up it will throw the idle codes, clearly as was stated in this video that breakpoint is WAY too high but i mean at least gm gave it some slack just in case and as long as you know what your looking at on the data youll clearly see the issue in 10 seconds of a datalog. great video!

Thank you for this video, it helped me solve P0106 and P2188 DTCs on my VW 2.5L Golf. The map sensor was fine, no vacuum leaks, but one of the sensors inside the drive-by-wire throttle body had gone bad. After replacing the throttle body with a new one the codes cleared up and have not come back. There were no error codes thrown for the throttle body specifically, so watching this helped lead me in the right direction.

Great example. I would hope that in a situation like this that as the manufacturer sees these problems ‘in the real world’ they would issue service bulletins so technicians will know how to handle it. I’d be surprised if that’s not in Mitchell or AllData, but it’s also great to have that built in to the tool too.

Another awesome video Paul, watched it two months ago and it came in handy today. Customer comes in to get a MAP installed that the local GM dealer told him he needed. 2006 Canyon 3.5L, P0106 code and an erratic idle in gear. TP angle 17%, MAP was good, ~4.6V KOEO and ~1.2V KOER. I cleaned the TB and it dropped to 7%, and the idle smoothed out. I'm confident the code will not return. Thanks again and keep posting these great videos.

Youre a stud man...my car is throwin this code...and recently ONCE went to the reduced engine power mode which is as i understand it is related to disparity in the throttle by wire situation...which can relate back to cleaning the throttle body incorrectly(dude removed the butterfly and failed to reposition it precisely). Your analysis is thoughtful and im going to work it. Thanks man and im now a subscriber.

Great video Paul, I had about three of these cases,except mine were all on 2005-2006 Chevy malibu's with the 4 cylinder engine. First one really kicked my butt, because as you mentioned the flow chart is pretty bad,it clearly shows the monitored components to set the code but it only really focuses on one component to diagnose. I know many unneeded parts are frequently changed on these vehicles due to this code. Great video with a lot of great info. Thanks

Another awesome vid! Its funny. I tried to search truck stalling when coming to stop and nowhere dirty TB is mentioned. Had this problem on for e250 van anytime when coming to stop or sometimes turning. it thru code for MAF sensor intermittent, so I replaced the MAF and it only stalled 1 out 20 times. I did however notice extremely low RPMS , in 200, so opened Paul's book Engine Performance and it said dirty TB. Let me tell you that TB didn't look that bad at all, but cleaning it made all the difference. Although my TP angle only dropped from 18 to 15% which is still high , my average rpm that before were 200s raised to 500s when stopping slow or hard. No more stalling issues.

My view is that there are number of monitored variables in the intake system and those variables (MAP, TPS etc) are measured and compared relative to other variables and each other. It makes programming the computer logic to determine faults quite complex. I think the program logic that deals with MAP and TPS cannot determine which is wrong so the programming is biased towards a MAP result. My point was that it's important to consider the wider system. Its a great vid and we can all learn more!

These ETC systems were never designed for performance gains. It was a huge cost saving design. Think about it. With an ETC system the following components on the car have been eliminated: all idle speed control devices, cruise control components (servos, motors, cables), and the throttle cable. How much money per car does this design save the manufacturer? I say a lot. The electronics needed to run these things is no more expensive than a Burger King Kids toy.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 11 лет назад
because desired throttle angle is learned and needs to change when the throttle plate gets dirty. so the desired reading is not what is ideal but what the computer is desiring the position to be at for proper idle rpm

Only had kerosene on hand as cleaner but worked fine.throttle angle still at 20 deg though but I guess will readjust.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 лет назад
It should and some of these will take over 40 miles of driving to relearn the base throttle position
@partytill10
@partytill10 8 лет назад
ok that will be interesting to check it at about 40 miles. I was thinking of perhaps diconnecting battery to reset everything, might have to replace battery anyway so that may happen anyway so I'll check it right after and see if throttle pos has changed. wodln't be surprised if it didn't though, I'd think there would be some sort fo back up power for computer so it retains info if battery is disconnected. If so that power source might not last v long, if battery left disconnected overnight that might reset it.
@partytill10
@partytill10 8 лет назад
But code hasn't come back and it's running fine so maybe throttle pos being offset doesn't worry it, although it is showing pretty poor miles per gal so that may be related.

you shouldn't have to. i would be worried about all those gray wires. how do we know it was wired correctly? you need to monitor both potentiometer signals directly right before the splice of the new harness and see if the signals change with throttle angle as designed. this will at least give us a starting point.

Nice vids with lots of detailed info...keep it up! You mentioned drive-by-wire in the vid. Did you ever have a job (or were just curious) where you investigated the acceleration delay that is observed on many of these electronic throttled cars? My Civic has DBW and the delay is very noticeable vs. my non-DBW, 96 Accord. It seems that many other people have issues with this as well. Perhaps this is an inherent flaw in the DBW design. Any insight? Thanks!

I'm back again, this time with a question. I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima 3.5 and I decided to clean the throttle body. {No Codes}. What I did was left the battery plugged in and disconnected the throttle connector. Cleaned the plate and the body. Cleaned the MAF and put everything back together. Started my car and my idle was crazy. Up and down. Tried the manual relearn and it would not take. Question is, Where and or what did I do wrong? This cost me $150 to get the dealer to do a relearn. Thankfully it was not one of my customer's vehicle.
@jonnyaykroyd
@jonnyaykroyd 11 лет назад
Without a Snap-on scan tool (or any scan tool for that matter), it should be obvious that the throttle body condition could throw the MAP sensor trouble code because they are part of a "system". The MAP value was out of range relative to the TPS (which throws up P0106) but the computer does not recognise that the TPS was wrong relative to engine RPM.
@frankgonzalez24

You should check to see if it is ok to open a drive by wire throttle body manually. On some TBs, you can damage it by opening it manually. In those situations, it would be best to remove the TB and clean the back side of the TB valve. The electric TB for my car runs $239.00, and that's from a parts store. I'd hate to know how much it cost from the dealer.

I was tripping on the wires myself but i checked all of them & found the 5V, signals, and the grounds.(Customer stated it was rewired by a Chevy Dealer by the way). I unplugged the harness and the signals jumped to 5V. So assuming the wiring was done correctly, this truck had a bad TAC. Don't know why it was rewired & customer doesn't either. This truck got a new TAC it ran fine so i called it a fix, i know there's more testing i could've done but i'm limited to a DVOM and Code Reader right now.

Rationality fault. The PCM sees higher than expected throttle angle at idle. Because of this, it expects to see a MAP signal that reflects the throttle signal and it doesn't, that is why it flagged the MAP sensor. With a higher than normal throttle angle, MAP should also increase but it did not, thus, the computer can not rationalize that. Obviously, Snap On troubleshooter can, haha. What would cause a higher than normal TPS at idle, it not closing all the way because of dirt intrusion.

I Like the videos your making. But have to disagree a bit about the Snap On scan tool. I was raised on Snap On products and have to say that the trouble shooter in their scan tools are very helpful. But it seems to me that lately their diagnostic products declined in dependability, functionality, and vehicle coverage. I have a Snap On Verus in my shop and i used to use it daily. But now i use the Launch Diagun. And Identifix Direct hit is my troubleshooter now.

Obviously the same group on engineers who made the code system wrote the flow chart,If a dirty T body causes a map code and not a TP code,then replacing the EGR valve may fix a EVAP code.And if we had a "known good part" for every flow chart,what the &*%$ do we need flow chart Thank you Paul

Hi Paul, in electronic throttle body, I always clean que The Same way you did, but I've seen people saying that is way is wrong, the correct way is to use spray with the engine running, I disagree because I think this very dangerous; you could make a video explaining the correct procedure? Thank you in advance.

Does the MAP sensor require calibration on any kind? I have a 1998 Honda CRV, no codes but I do have high Short Term Fuel trims -14-16. I put in a new MAP and the Short Term Fuel trims display a better range of -1 to 0 however the CEL turns on displaying code P0108.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 7 лет назад
I assume a P0108 is a MAP code. No, the MAP sensor does not need calibrated. Did you have a MAP code before?
@THERIGGEDONE
@THERIGGEDONE 7 лет назад
ScannerDanner No previous code, only when the new MAP is connected. After further testing with a vacuum source, it looks like the ECM isn't seeing the new MAP or it's shot, the scan tool MAP reading is 29 with the old MAP and 59'with the new MAP and with no MAP connected, hence the CEL, all tests were KOEO.

You asked why the manufacturer would leave out throttle position in the troubleshooting flow chart.One would think that carbon on the throttle plate would be a preliminary check! But what do I know I have no degree .

I would like to thank you for this video as a licenced technician myself, ive been fighting some issues with map codes on Hyundai and kia, and have had the same map numbers as what your seeing on that scanner, I have cleaned throttle plates before for issues with idling, I will be trying this in the morning to see what my data looks like. im not sure if ill get a reply to this or not but what kind of altitude are you at?, ill be looking at my data tomorrow a little closer, thank you for this video. cory

Seems like somewhere it would say that a warm engine idle should be around 6% throttle angle. You seemed to know that, but is that from experience or documentation? Is 6% a general rule of thumb across a lot, or most, vehicles?

This is good. My l200 tps is at 100% at idle and has no guts under load. Starts great though

ScannerDanner I have zero vacuum at idle also and seems to be missing. It runs out of puff on hills. I live in Wales and there's a shortage of good diagnostics guy's here, they just seem to change parts you don't need and that's the dealers. Great vids Dan and thanks for the reply.

great video!. But what if I already clean the TH plate, changed the map sensor/ egr valve ( 07 ford 150) map sensor, already had new plugs and intake mani, changed all coil packs,no vac leaks ,and still get p0106 , the odd p0300 and p2195_97 ! in the list of "to dos" it said p0106 could be caused by cam timing!... so could a starting to fail cam/crank sensor be the cause to sum of these codes? sincerely, my last Ford

Hello, Mr Danner. I am dealing with a p2135 on a 2004 Nissan Murano. It is said that the code is set when Tps1 and Tps2 have correlation issues. I am leaning towards cleaning the throttle body. Do you think that could fix the no throttle response? Please, your answer would be very appreciated.

Paul, Do you recall the Lexus you had which was not starting? It had so much carbon that there was no room for the idle air to move! That was another tricky problem. Come to think of if, looking at throttle plate should be must if you are trying to diagnosis driveability problem on high mileage vehicle on your own.

My thoughts on that is if the throttle body is dirty then this supposed anti-carbon finish didn't do its job anyway. Clean away with whatever you have, just be careful. You don't want to get it into a TPS or ETC system componenets

It's so easy to reach the throttle body on this car. It takes an hour to reach it on my Volvo. It's buried down on the side of the engine. It is so difficult to reach that they almost never get cleaned and so they are frequently the cause of trouble codes.

Hello, Mr Paul. Should we expect tp voltage to be elevated with Key On Engine Off? I had a car with a pending Map code that cranked and wouldn't start.

@mlb0611 typical isn't it? anyway thanks for the tip. I've been cautious about the cleaner. had a cavalier that one of my garages ended up having to replace the unit after a cleaning service. i wasn't part of that job but was told about it.

This was super informative. Ive been tormented with p0106 for the last month. My car has aftermarket forced induction and I thought the code was from the OEM sensor going bad and so I replaced it. Didn't do the trick. Then I got to talking to some people who know a little more about engines than I do and they started talking about a leak in my intake manifold. Im also throwing an o2 sensor code, but that stays away for a while when I clear it unlike the MAP sensor code. I just cleaned my throttle bodies, took it for a test drive and felt it have more pep in its step, cleared the code and am hoping it stays away. In your experience would p0106 paired with p2a03 be signs of a leak somewhere??
@ScannerDanner

+Josh Suriano not familiar with the p2a03, you sure you typed that correctly? But yes, I am sure that you fixed your MAP code

I hooked a live data scanner to my 2000 CHRYSLER Voyager 3.0 V6 key on engine off, and the throttle position sensor read "14.1" -"74.9" mostly smoothish climb while using the foot feed..My map sensor read 3.5v ... I hear that there is a possibility that these two sensors may share a common ground, I have a scanner and multimeter but little to no knowledge of complex wiring systems..My question would be how would I check both tps and map wiring locations with the tools I have AND if grounds are found to be bad could I just ground each sensor to the systems closet grounding point (i.e. tps to block and map to firewall bolts?) You could eat off my Throttle Body, I've even port matched smoothed and polished the upper air intake plenum... All other sensors are new and I have a new Tps and Map on the way, I would just like to verify the connectors before I put the new ones in.... Thanks ScannerDanner Your The Man !!
