After you've run into enough monstrosities, the fact of facing a monstrosity doesn't faze you as much as the specific details of its monstrousness might.
Tape: *"Sharing this with friends or loved ones is prohibited."* Mark: *looks at viewers Mark: "...do you count as friends or loved ones?" Dammit Mark, you're too sweet
@@sexgayminors Lmao, i am simply aware that getting emotionally attached to complete strangers on the internet isn't super healthy. Parasocial relationships can for some be a way of getting comfort and it might feel like having a friend in a way, but it can get toxic.
@@friendlyneighborhoodcrusad4242 I didn't say emotionally attached I meant in the way where you imagine he's in the same room, it's hard to explain but It's a great way to zone out, if I wanted to feel wanted then I would catch up with my friends. But the way you said it sounds like you don't value yourself as unique, like your just one insignificant part of millions of people
I've literally had to hide in the comments for majority if the video. uncanny valley has to be the scariest kinda horror out there, very addictive tho...
I love these kinds of games because it horrifies you in a kind of way. No jump scares or anything, but it makes me feel really uncomfortable. Like something is here with me
Ok you wanna know what I love about this video? The fact that after Mark finished the game he didn't went "Well that was weird, I don't know what happened... BYE GUYS!" Instead he looked it up and made more content
After watching this several times it took me a while to figure out that the guy that was calling the police in Maple County was the guy that was playing dead alternate. He tried to lure the police to his house to kill him.
Alternates have done things like that canonically. To the point where police are trained to not respond to calls involving alternates. Nothing is worth the risk, after all.
that would make a lot of sense, considering that they've lured their victims over the phone before. for example, that's what cesar's alternate did to mark
The look on marks face when it used his name was one thing, but finding out the character was named mark in honour of him unbeknownst to him is just amazing lmfao
Humans having a fear response when seeing something in the uncanny valley means that we have an evolutionary reason to be afraid of things that look human but aren't
@@UserUserFine1817 dead bodies/carcasses if i had to guess? the presence of one would indicative of disease, a predator, or some sort of environmental hazard in the area
@@UserUserFine1817 well, we come from the genus "homo" and have close ties to the astrailopethicus genus, which looked like apes with humans faces. There's some evidence of other similar species hunting humans, or at least being threats to them.
This was genuinely one of the most unnerving things I've seen in a while. I can't imagine how fucked up my sleep schedule would’ve gotten if I was watching this for the first time without Markiplier to mediate it.
the scary thing about games like this, is that they tap into the uncanny valley effect. which is not just something that some people have, it's an instinctual thing. It causes anxiety and fear because we a humans, fear what we dont know. Uncanny valley is where something can look human but slightly off. It scares us because were unable to identify if it's entirely a threat or not
What's peculiar about the "Uncanny Valley" effect, is that it suggests that somewhere in the evolution of humans, we evolved to be disturbed and/or scared of... something.
Very true, In addition, unpredictable and chaotic noises, specially the scream of women and children are naturally carved into our brains as a sign of threat. Mixing this with realistic footage instead of cartoon-ish or at least some what unrealistic graphics that others usually use, and the distortion of normal stuff like sounds and faces, giving them more unnatural properties, results the worst possible for our beains
Apparently thats why some people are scared of clowns and why so many things that are “spooky” (think slenderman) have humanoid features but usually too long and gangly to be normal. It was cool to see someone bring it up here!
This game officially broke my "i never scared of watching horor games ever as long as Mark is there to play the game" record. This game is creepy as hell
That’s amazing. I only say that because Teenage Disaster made it and he’s an amazing artist and I’m so happy to know he actually made a scare game that’s not full of only jumpscares
Lack of emotion, uncanny facial features, verbal mirroring, and lack of eye tracking. Damn this whole time I thought I was autistic but apparently I'm an alternate
The Police training video that said something like: "Don't send help when it's about an alternate encounter--and hang up when the other end goes silent and don't ablige no matter the screams" freaked me the fuck out, and the, "nothing is worth the risk" that's so fucking scary to think about
I'm glad someone pointed that out so I didn't have to. By the way, Merry Christmas! Remember, if you come across any of the aforementioned, call the Avengers or the Fantasic Four. The police CAN NOT and WILL NOT help you.
Has to be a sort of chain reaction. AlphaBetaGamer broadcasted a playtest of Maple County, a bunch of people started looking up what Mandela Catalogue was, and RU-vid algorithms got it landed in people's recommended.
The name Mark Heathcliff was made with you in mind. Thank you for being my inspiration for so many years man. I also can't thank Thorne Baker enough for making Maple County.
Honestly if I wasn’t watching this with mark I wouldn’t have watched it with anyone else, he’s practically my safe place nothing can touch me if he’s there tbh
The key thing is to record double wide. One side is the game in regular 1080 resolution and the other side is the webcam in regular 1080 resolution. Doing this for recordings lets you manipulate the webcam side around just like Mark and Sean do. Seemingly easy, but many prefer to just resize their webcam on the game and leave it.
@@SlothFang you need to be careful when doing this. Although a janky option, messing with multiple layers of video require a lot of editing power. A lot of bigger youtubers have seperate cams/audio to make it significantly easier to edit seperately. Usually costing around 1k for the luxury.
At 17:10, I am just fascinated that full-grown adults can be scared when someone knocks at midnight while little children can see a man in their closet and still be calm.
@@aneurysm1991 if you're talking about Maple County being in the same universe as the Mandela Catalogue, yes, it is stated in the intruder video I believe, the statistics about missing children all over 4 counties
What makes a game like this scary isn't the jumpscares or gore, but just thr uncanny valley mixed with ominous sense of something being absolutely wrong but not sure what.
I know it’s random but for the people who want to know more or want to see more about maple county. The creator is Thorne baker, (teenage Disaster) he’s a musician, artist, and a game developer. He makes music videos and a very underrated artist. He’ll be at tour soon. So, uh yeah. It’s Thorne baker ladies and gentlemen.
@@lesser1086 yes! I love it because I'm a jumpy little bitch. Like, a simple music sting makes me jump. Analog horror is usually just viscerally upsetting or unsettling and that's the best kinda skin crawl I can get.
@@Shala_Boi straight facts, analog horror is legit scary to me, as opposed to things like fnaf, I love fnaf and all, but the jumpscares are just there and gone, where with analog horror it seems to stick and stay with you longer, more realistic in a way, dunno I love horror lol
Only the first part was a game, the part after he searched the title was a video which is part of a group of other videos that are in the Mandela Catalogue channel. Mandela Catalogue is a really well done analog horror channel, I suggest checking it out (obviously if this is your type of stuff)
What I think is really cool is how Alex Kister was able to make the concept of humans being creepily replaced feel new and scary. It's the same trope that has existed for decades of sci-fi and horror, but he did an amazing job of making it feel real.
Weird thing I noticed: Mark accidentally said "stress" in a polyphonic voice at 19:06. Polyphonic singing is typically done when two notes are sung at the same time, this is caused by pushing just the right amount of air between the false folds and vocal folds. The more you know.
When I first seen this I was only 3 minutes into the video and I was like it’s not that scary. Ended the video and I understand why you would be scared
I like coming back to this video because I really enjoy this particular style of horror/analog horror, with the alternates and uncanny valley effect. It's got a really good mesh of elements that make it so perfectly scary for different reasons. You have your uncanny valley effect, the idea of something being human-like but not quite right. Then you have the idea of the unknown, of something you don't or can't fully grasp. Then the idea of the unknown assailant/entity/etc being smart or sentient enough to learn; it's not just mindless and acting on base instinct, it is intelligent and can adapt and can actively choose to deceive you or lure you in. And then the idea of false hope or even no hope; the fact that even if you can cry out for help, help is not coming, you are alone and you will not be saved. And lastly, the element of something being in your space, your home, a place that is usually inherently believed as a haven; that's now no longer true, and you are no longer comfortable or safe in your own home/or place that should be those things. I really like analyzing horror concepts and understanding why exactly things are scary. This mandela catalogue style in particular is fantastic at nailing one or more of these elements.
This. This was creepy. Not scary, creepy. The unnatural idea of alternates, and the distorted images. The twisted calls of "Let me in Mark", the denial to help those in an alternate encounter. Terrifying. Loved it though.
Probably my favorite form of horror. They aren't cheap like jumpscares, but instead know what makes you tick, and knows exactly how to get under your skin. Also fun fact: The creator of the Mandela Catalogue got inspiration from the pandemic. The months spent cooped up in his own house - a very secure place - got him thinking about how to make something *unsecure* He also said something along the lines of "It wasn't the boogeyman that scared me as a child, but the idea of coming home one day, going to your room, and seeing yourself standing there." That's definitely the inspiration behind the alternates, and he did a fantastic job portraying them.
@@xxrazberrywolfxx3572 yk they say that shape shifting aliens exist. I, who kinda believes that aliens exist, but not those green big headed ones, think that there are aliens who can look exactly like us and we wouldn't even know😳 There has been actual evidence proving all this. I don't think that the devs created this game for fun only. I think they created it to spread something to think about. Spread awareness, maybe?
IMO this is one of the best types of horror. No cheap jumpscares, no chase scenes, just pure dread built on the fear of the unknown and unnatural. 10/10, one of my fave videos in a while, and to the people who made both the Maple County game and the Mandela Catalogue video, well done.
I was honestly fully expecting at least one jump scare because they tend to be so prevalent in horror games now. And I was bracing myself through this whole video waiting for one but the only one i got was from Mark himself at the very end. lol
Hands down the best way to get a person scared is not to scare them, but to put all the tools and material into their brain so they scare themselves for you. Nobody knows how to scare the crap out of someone better than their own mind.
6:04 i think it’s so cool how they used starts and stripes forever in the background bc it used to be played during emergencies to alert staff that they needed to evacuate people without them freaking out and causing panic. I’m definitely over analyzing, but maybe they chose the piece to show how you should get away as fast as possible lol
@@GeekMan237 >Steals >Non Profit >Says Inspired in Game Description Why are you spamming this lame comment on every post that's positive about this game?
I think the genre of horror that plays with Uncanny Valley is not nearly explored enough, so I like the concepts in this and how they make the antagonist scarily human-like
There is one significant exhibition of the Mandela Catalogue/Uncanny Valley-esque horror that I believe is unsung. The movie “Truth or Dare” creepy shit mane
the thing about the mandela catalogue isn’t that there are sudden jumpscares or things you don’t expect, its the way that the game is set out, no background info on what’s happening, the style, it’s more creepy than scary
@@wastingsun thats why its great having a name like Salem (unless its about the witch trials or based in massachusetts like Little Hope or Murdered Soul Suspect) because I don’t get slightly scared when my names mentioned LOL. Gonna be honest, I came to the comments to embrace the style that Analog Horror is supposed to be, and I began to nearly cry because of the stress it caused.... Gotta love human imagination
@@pineappleparty1624 Everyone perceives fear differently, see. What may be unsettling for some, will be normalcy for others. Say, an unusual fear I have is that of cats, yet, not many other people are afraid of cats, yes? So, in conclusion, analogue horror pokes at my innate fear of 'reality', unsettling sounds, and strange fantastical experiences that may pose a threat to me. How other view analogue horror, I do not know. As for you, you're probably named Chuck Norris or Vladimir Putin and are a very handsome person, or you've had different experiences that separates what you're scared of to what we're scared of.
@@WeAMknn thanks lol. I'm just a pineapple girl. I lived through the actual era of VHS tapes and terrible PSX graphics. It just looks like a really really rookie horror game to me. The awful art just makes me too annoyed to be scared. Maybe it's only scary to people that never experienced the primitive technology? thanks for explaining your side to me. =]
@@pineappleparty1624 Ah, that makes sense. Resident Evil nor Phasmo scare me much, but these do. I guess it's a sort of generational gap, because I've never used old or lower quality devices before.
same! i saw someone else play this and i totally forgot to check out the lore myself lol edit: also im too chicken to watch alone so watching with mark and the comments section helps :D
Not exactly sure what you mean, but alternates kill people and then make themselves into a clone of you, trying to use that form to get closer to others and you know
This whole thing reminds me of that theory that the existence of the Uncanny Valley implies that there is an evolutionary reason for humans to fear something that looked human but wasn't. This actually gave me chills all over when I watched this video. Really good job to the developer/creator!
The uncanny valley is evolutionary oversight most likely, in reality, but fuck if that isnt a horrifying theory Edit: I just had the realization that it could have come from the fact other species of human in the genus homo existed and thus our ancestors, as neanderthals evidently were, aggressive towards them. Homo erectus, for example, had a vastly more varied set of facial features on top of a structure that was already not like ours or our ancestors.
