September 16, 2021. Chelan and Skagit Counties, Washington.
The Lake Ann/Maple Pass Trail starts at Rainy Pass on Hwy 20. This trail is usually done as a counterclockwise loop with a return via the Rainy Lake Trail, but on this day upon reaching Heather Pass (below Maple Pass) I turned onto the Wing Lake "trail", which is a climber's route approaching Black Peak.
Round trip was about 10 miles and close to 3000 feet of elevation change. The climber's route is very steep and rough in places. The largest boulder field crossing in particular requires caution, and is easy to miss the best route over (watch for cairns).

One of my most memorable backpacking trips was to Wing Lake years ago, when an afternoon thunder storm quickly moved in after a fair weather hike to the lake. Lightning struck Corteo and Black Peaks, the air was buzzing like a hive of bees, and we decided to hightail it for lower ground. Just as we were about to descend the trail back to Lewis Lake a bolt of lightning struck the trail about 30 yards below us. Scary to say the least!! We hunkered down and waited it out, thankfully it was a fast-moving storm system. Definitely reinforced our respect for thunderstorms in the high country! I very much enjoy & appreciate your sharing of backpacking trips in Washington. We are so lucky to live here!

Great views of the two lakes and surrounding peaks! We’ve done the loop a few times, but never headed over on this trail. The Boulder field looked a bit steep and with loose rocks. Looks like the lakes are worth the effort. Fun to see so many picas! Awesome!! 👍👌⛰

It's worth doing! Curious, I'm guessing you have, have you seen weasels in the wild? I saw my only one here, right above Lewis Lake, a few years back.

@@MrArtudtoo Yeah, I used to occasionally see them in Kokanee Park way back in those days. That's the only place I've seen them. Have a great week! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yTTZEVQuSsI.html

I didn't get video, but not long ago when I was arriving back home I spotted a weasel in front of my house! It had something in its mouth, a mouse I'd guess.
