Every function has a chord-scale associated to it. The IV chord’s chord-scale is Lydian (that’s because if you start the major scale in the fourth degree it turns into a Lydian scale) then you just build the chord by stacking 3rds using the root of the IV ( in C it would be F) 1 3 5 7 9 #11 13 . You can use the first three notes 1 3 5 and then you get a major triad. Or you can extend it to 1 3 5 7 you will get a Maj7 chord. If you extended all the way you get a Maj7 9 #11 13 chord and since the only tension ( number above 7 ) that’s altered is th 11 (#11) then you can simply say maj7#11 Extending a chord is a choice you still get a IV functionally

In minor you can have the b6 or the 6 depending if you are using melodic minor or Harmonic minor.

thanks in other formes other than blues, when the tonic is im (maj7), as in Melodic min, is the IV7 a SD or Dominant?

Mark Davenport Gm7 does not contain a tritone in it. Without a tritone the chord does not have enough tension and does not want to resolve to the I as strongly. The G7 is a much better dominant chord. Also Am is like a C major with an A on the bass, it resolves all tension from a G7 for example so it sounds as a tonic chord.

Thanks so much for your reply. I appreciate your taking the time. After trying it out on the keyboard, moving from G7 to Cm7 sounds more "urgent" than Gm7 to Cm7. However I still don't really understand the tritone part. Perhaps I'm making a mistake, but from G, would the tritone be C# ? If so, neither the Gm7 or the G7 contain a tritone, but I must be misunderstanding something. Could you break that down or point me in the right direction? Also, thanks for explaining the A minor tonic. I get it now!

It's explained in an other reply. Indeed there were no proper explaination. It's just that Am7 (aceg) is changed to a Cm6/6 (a c eb g). It's to bring an other possibility of résolution from G7. It's equivalent to a G7 - Cm.

The Am7b5 is not a substitute of Am7. The chords inside the circle are from the minor mode and the chords outside the circle from the major mode. In Cm you can consider Harmonic minor and melodic minor. In C melodic minor the A is natural, that’s why in many songs in minor the 1 chord is a minor 6 chord. Cm6 is the same as Am7b5. This chord is a tonic chord in minor and indeed a substitute candidate for Cm6.

@@mDecksMusic Thank you, it was a great explanation, I got the point. It seems to me that observing other possible combinations of triads and tetrads by reversing the order of the triad seems to make chaining a more complex process than it was thought to be. It is confusing to think, for example, that a C7M, can be the same as an Em6 (or vice versa) knowing that the same is ambiguous, and relative of the dominant, this complicate a little. But, I'm very grateful to answer my question, thank you very much.

Hi Phil, the tracks you import could be in any format as long as you have purchased them on iTunes. (FYI the track cannot have DRM) check the tutorials (Decoding Bach's Harmonic Language) where we show how to import an iTunes song into the app and create an analysis for it. To browse the online progressions tap on the search icon to the left of the progressions name in progressions mode (also watch the tutorials) Hope this helps

+Phil Brown Make sure they are in your iPad not in the cloud. Also songs with DRM do not work, some old songs have a DRM code which are impossible to import into iPad. Anyway, which error are you seeing displayed when you try to import or play?

Hi Ariel, not wishing to hi jack this question. So is it impossible to use tracks that are on my pad that have been added through Apple Music?

Not directly from Apple Music. Can you import Apple Music tracks into the iTunes Library? I haven't tried that yet.

+eddie Lopes In this version you can't choose between alternatives functions. the app will play minor maj7 on the I minor or the IV minor depending on how you build the progression. On the next version we are including alternative notations for each function

Hi, what do you mean by LOCAL?

Hi Phil. Two things: You may import your own audio files if they are in the iTunes library, just make sure there info is all in. If you go to your iTunes library in your computer and control+click on the song while viewing it in iTunes and then select "Get Info" make sure that there's something in song, artist, album, album artist and composer. Then you import it into your iPad. That way MTH can import the song and store a reference to it in your iTunes library, otherwise it will ask every time for you to find the song in the library. Also, MTH cannot analyze the song by itself. Not yet :( You have to analyze it :) I have tried several algorithms to turn audio into MIDI but I don't have a solution that is 100% reliable yet. What you can do is sync your analysis to the audio track which is great for teachers or if you want to see how the same harmonic progression will look in other keys or to understand what is really going on in the harmony.

Good clarification. I suppose the rhythmic-applications of a chord/ progression could lead to plagiarism, not the hypothetically identical usage of notes within the chordal movement.

The objective was focusing on different options for the different maps rather than avoiding parallel fifths and octaves, but yes we are working on a voice leading option to also match the style (in four voices only at first since the most standard configuration for classical music exercises). Have you read vol.1 from the mapping tonal Harmony Workbooks? That’s a pretty good intro to chords and harmony
