Turns out the Gabon Prime Minister (who later became the 1st president of the Gabon republic) wanted Gabon to become a French oversea department (the same status as French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, the Réunion & Mayotte). So there was a legit chance for France to grant them this status if they didn't give them independence. The fact that the same country that colonized the place also forced the population to be independent is kind of a funny annecdote.

There were large jewish communities in all the southern states prior to the mass immigration of the 1800's. They didn't really go away, but the north east gained so many recent arrivals that they were kind of over shadowed due to sheer numbers.
