Marcelo explains a difficult decision he made to have Munchi and Dillon take time away from the academy. In addition, Marcelo characterizes the values and standards that defines a positive Jiu-Jitsu culture.
I took a class at MGs place this past Tuesday. As I’m checking in and signing the waiver to roll. Marcelo comes up to me, taps me on the shoulders, shakes my hand and introduces himself and welcomes me to his gym. Class act legend 🐐!
drumtravelfun I have met plenty of BJJ legends who preach respect, humility, love and honor but live lives that anything but noble. I have never met Marcelo Garcia but some of my friends and training partners have and they say he is the nicest, humblest most respectable human being you could ever meet.
You can tell Marcelo does this with a heavy heart, he becomes a lot more emotional when he directly says they have to take some time off. Shows how nice the guy is and also how he cherishes people from his gym.
If the nicest guy in the world and one of the top 5 jiu jitsu practitioners of all time (who also happens to be the professor that gave you your black belt) suspends you from his own Academy, there must be something really bad with you.Grow up, Dillon. Learn from The King. He can choke anybody in the world and yet he decides to be humble and nice to everybody. That's a real champion right there.
Marcelo's speech was beautiful.. A martial artist by the very essence of the word. To see an all time great do this is moving. ❤️ Always stay the course. 💯 #respect #humility #kindness #integrity
According to people who knew danis well he used to be a really nice guy until he started hanging out with that insecure cokehead mcgregor. Shame on mcgregor for being a shitty influence and shame one danis for being weak willed and listening to a bad influence like mcgregor.
I want to be around people like Marcelo. People who care about others and want to become better a person. Among all the chaos in the world, it is a breath of fresh air to see this sort of personality in a community which I am a part of.
Just when you thought you could not admire a man any more than you already do ... to care THIS much, to put your every day students above those who could bring championships and further fame and notoriety to your school ... this is why Marcelo will always be my idol
Marcelo, I back your decision 100%. I trained at renzos but had the chance to go meet you and train twice at your gym in Manhattan. I know who you are and the values you promote are the ones that should be promoted in martial arts' teachings. Nowadays with the ufcs and Conor's influence, we have a youth with a distorted view of what being a true martial artist means. They are culture vultures, in it for the money and fame only. I commend you for not just denouncing Dillon's attitude but actually doing something about it and kicking him out of your academy. He isn't upholding the core values of a martial artist, much less one that was taught by a master practitioner such as yourself. Obrigado for keeping it real and maintaining these core values like humility, integrity, and correctness that should be taught in all martial art academies.
Sesiones Lirikalez i envy you for meeting him, i really hope to go to new york just to train with marcelo and give me his point of view about my jiu jitsu and invite him to grab something to eat and give me some tips on becoming a better jiu jitsu athlete/coach.
The BJJ And gaming channel, by ivan cabello. Marcelo is a mans' man and a great humble teacher. Anyone with the chance should go and learn from him because he personifies the true teachings of Jiu Jitsu.
I don't know the specifics, but commonsense says that humility is a big part of not just jujitsu but martial arts teachings as a whole. Dilon was very far from being humble and who knows if that attitude started rubbing off on mg academy students.
We should all strive to live up to these words. Who you surround yourself with speaks so much about who you are and what you believe in. Kudos Marcelo.
I always believed that there is a big difference between being a NICE GUY and a GOOD PERSON. Marcelo is both. He is truly an inspiration to me. Thank you.
that is the type of friend/trainer you want to have to develop both as a practicioner and human: one of the best ever in the sport and a nice human being. Mucho respect from sweden!
Marcelo is an exemplary sensei/coach human being and his teachings reach beyond his school to practitioners of bjj throughout the globe. He displays all the qualities and virtues of a wise and humble master. It is unfortunate that he has to make these difficult decisions at his academy but he is a visionary and philosophical teacher and he is hopeful that his message and standards are passed onto his disciples and teachers alike. OSS to the MGA.
Much respect to you professor Garcia. The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. Fabio and Zander are doing a great job in Detroit teaching jiujitsu and this message. Shalom
tea bag it's called respect, obviously you don't know who Marcelo is or what he's done. To put it in terms you'd understand, it's like your favorite gigolo telling you he won't service you any longer.
@@wdiddy1 You can respect a person for his accomplishments, yet to humiliate yourself before a man that is made out of flesh like everybody else is the trait of a person that has no personality or self worth. There are plenty of Jiu Jitsu instructors that are accomplished and respected out there, you guys act as if Marcelo is the only guy that has contributed to the sport.
Man, You are legend, like a jiu jitsu man, like a coach, like a frien and I know that you are best of best for your family..so, you are example for everybady . I am from Serbia, Belgrade and look you only here but I am happy to know that you teach peple. ( srry for my engl.). Thank you more one time and BIG rgds for you, your team and your family👍👍
This is very well said. Marcelo, your humility is the reason why we continue after many years to love and respect you. Not everyone cares, and when you says you care, we can see you mean it with every bit of yourself. There are things you need to do as a leader that aren't enjoyable or desirable, but they still need to be done. 'What's not good for the beehive is not good for the bee.' - Marcus Aurelius. No action is still action. You took a stand and we commend you for that. Your leadership is inspiring and encourages all of us ' to do better'. Oss
Marcelo is king of big hearts. Even when he is upset he is still big hearted. I see him down here in Long Beach couple times at the tournaments; last time he saw me I had a knee cast on and I knew what he was thinking because of his big heart
Marcelo, thank you for being a great human being and upholding the highest standards of class and discipline. You've influenced so many people in positive ways. This is yet another way you are leading by example.
you have a slight variation but this is known as the Judo Moral Code which is the set of ethics that was created by the founder of judo, Kano, for both on AND off the mat. we try to impart these beliefs to our youngest and expect these from our most advanced, we see these 8 words "Courtesy, Courage, Friendship, Honesty, Honour, Modesty, Respect, Self-Control" in dojos and it was on a huge banner during our provincial championships 2-3 weeks ago. I've seen national champions asked to leave a dojo because of their behavior so I am extremely impressed that Marcelo took this stance because I always felt that the BJJ world only deals with the sporting aspect, not the pedagogical or moral. Utmost respect for the man.
Nick Laney agreed (Kano took from various schools of JJJ after all) but few have your sense of history. I was more thinking about present day since ive never come across these codes in any BJJ, TKD, karate schools. its considered antiquated beliefs by some/many.
At every belt promotion Marcelo talks more about being a good person than being a technical master. He talks of BJJ like a super power and that if someone had amazing BJJ but is a bad person that would be really bad. Example; Eberth Santos.
What a great guy Marcelo is. I also think this will help Dillon in the long run. He needs to stop imitating mcgregor and be himself, and I hope getting kicked out helps him realise that
i always wondered what marcelo thought about one of his best black belts running around talking mad shit with mcgregor... i guess he wasnt feeling that shit
Excelente ensinamento. Pessoalmente que o jiu-jitsu seria melhor visto e um aceitação ainda maior se existissem mais mestres como o Marcelo. Oss.
Dillon wasn't representating Marcelo's academy well lately... He became really cocky and was looking for beef with everyone, i support your decision, I like Dillon's BJJ but he has to remember that when his behaviour is not the best not only he looks bad on the picture , you look bad on the picture aswell. Oss!
I agree with your post but hiss BJJ is mediocre. It looks great in short cut shots promoting his new place unity jiu jitsu but watch the Danis Tonon fight. He ran the entire time
I knew from the start when Danis trained with the McGregor camp, he was going to come back with a different mentality. Starting wearing RayBans, started talking smack all over FLO... it was obvious it was going to happen, What MG did was right. BIG UPS! All the media trash talking.. leave that to BOXING and MMA
It's funny to look at Marcelo and he just looks like some little friendly guy, but he's actually an absolute killer with manners. That's confusing to my brain after years of UFC but it makes you respect him a lot more
Good to see that in this era when men sacrificing their character for money is seen as a positive trait, they are still people out there who stand up for what is right and truly valuable.
No, there is literally video of what happened you fucking moron. Khabib's manager hit Dillon on the back, Dillon pushed him and that's when Khabib jumped in. The video is from right behind Dillon, you can see Dillon not saying anything. On top of that Conor's coach John Kavanaugh who is well respected said Dillon didn't say anything. Tell me, what witnesses said he was saying it? Khabib fans lmao?
amazing that MG doesn't bash anyone or speak badly about anyone, even people that maybe deserve it. in everything he does, he tries to be kind and loving to everyone. a real role model.
"A samurai is a total human being, whereas a man who is completely absorbed in his technical skill has degenerated into a function--one cog in a machine." ~Yukio Mushima Nice job Marcelo
In a sport where many BJJ legends and figureheads preach respect, honor, and humility but live lives which are anything but Marcelo Garcia is one of few who is the real deal. I have never met him but plenty of my friends and training partners have and say he is the nicest person they have encountered in the community.
Listening to Marcelo explain his decision certain adjectives come to mind: Diplomatic, sincere, taking the high road. With the explosion in popularity of Jiu-Jitsu around the world, most of us are drawn to this amazing art for the life-changing affect it has all facets of our lives. Whether for self-defense, fitness, competition or curiosity being the impetus for us first looking into Jiu-Jitsu, we stay and train for so many other reasons. It will also attract a few people that see it as a way to dominate and impose their will upon others, since it IS the MOST effective Martial Art on Earth. Guys with SDS-Small Dick Syndrome, that act the fool hoping others will notice them because they are so shallow and have NO depth to their character. I fear danis is one of these,
very good and wise man. dillon is not showing what mg bjj stand for, is a conor mcgregor wannabe, he needs to respect people and apply the values of bjj specially if a guy like marcelo made him , oss marcelo huge hug
Taking decisions and keeping the balance is important. Nothing bad about it. It is what it is. That is why people choose where to be and where not to be.
I didn´t knew about this guy until today, when i found him on a bjj playlist. After watching like 4 videos and interviews this seem like a very genuine guy. He obviously cares about his craft but also about the morals of it. I´m a painter and i really admire people who stay true to their art, who are critic with themselves and stay humble. Problem is that nowadays we live in a fuckedup world where people try to be what they are not and sometimes they try so hard is unbelievable. I never liked dillon danis i think he´s a joke, and is very sad, because in all his social media you can see on his face he didn´t even believe in whats he´s saying or who he says he is. It´s a shame that nowadays you have to create almost like a fake persona in order to accomplish anything "entertaiment" related. There have been always fake people trying so hard to be somebody else, the difference is that nowadays most of people don´t even recognize this and take everything for what it appears to be. That makes the things even worse, because people lose themselves in a situation where they can not succeed being themselves, and that´s very sad. Hats off to this man for staying true to himself. You can tell he´s a very happy man, doing what he loves and not faking anything.... that sounds easy but i think it´s the most difficult thing to accomplish in life, i hope to achieve that someday. True inspiration
There are always two sides to every story. You can't force somebody to be the person they are not just because you help him out. You can't force someone to live your way of life outside the gym. Everyone has a personal life and his own way of earning money. Dillon has been very loyal till date and as per different sources, he has never been disrespectful to anyone inside the gym and has followed every rules. It's just ridiculous to dictate how a person should act in social media and media. Dillion Danis is definitely cocky and personally, I prefer someone like Marcelo. I can relate to Marcelo's personality but what the gym did to him was dirty. Good to see that Conor stick with him. Dillon Danis mention in an interview that his best friend and his friends didn't even contact him once during this time and they went ahead with the media stories. He mentioned that Conor would always call up or text and ask how he is doing. Not surprised to see Dillon jumping infront of every brawl Conor had. With Diaz, Mayweather and Khabib. Loyalty is the most important thing for me even though I respect Marcelo's philosophy /preference is more focused on personality/public image. He seems really hurt to see Marcelo going to media with stories and not even a single friends including his best friend not sticking up for him. He was stabbed in the back, his friends instead of supporting him in secret through text messages or solidarity kept spreading these bad news about Dillon. Character Assassin
