I know this is two years too late. But having embarked on my first no buy year in 2021, this was very helpful. I love the way you still acknowledge the things you want and still wish you’d received as gifts or were able to buy, almost as a way of mourning (I know it’s just stuff but when you’re trying to detach from unwise spending problems, it feels like mourning) and also as a way of processing those feelings and moving on. So so helpful hannah!

Dear Hannah, I've been working my way through your videos in an erratic fashion and thought that it was about time that I extended my thanks to you :-) I've been using your words/attitude to inculcate myself into the notion that a No Buy might be a desirable and positive step. Ironically, but maybe predictably, my 'wants' have blossomed whilst I've been in this intensive research phase - I've made a handful of considered purchases as a last hurrah. I've been sorting through all of my makeup - tidying, cleaning, decluttering at a slow (sustainable) pace. I think that I'm on the right track. The word that has strengthened my resolve and pushed me that much closer to committing to a No Buy is *conviction*. Thank you so much! It's such a valuable, transferrable lesson and the key that my mind/spirit needed. Please don't feel the need to shorten your videos - your thoroughness appeals to me and I'd hate to feel that you were communicating a truncated version of your thoughts to fit to a narrow RU-vid ideal. I think you're doing marvellously just as you are. Thank you so much for being so articulate, thoughtful and inspiring and for proving conclusively that a love of fashion, beauty and lovely objects does not mean one lacks intelligence, especially if it's exercised in such a considered way. All best wishes to you (and gorgeous Sadie, naturally) Xxx

Oh my gosh Georgina, thank you for this incredibly lovely comment! I appreciate your support so much and I'm glad my project is helping you. FYI, the process you are describing is exactly what I went through to prepare for my long no-buy. I bought a lot of things in December to make sure I could make it through. Some were practical purchases (like underwear, LOL) and some were just a last-hurrah kind of thing. But once I started the no-buy, there was plenty that I wish I'd bought before and plenty that I realized I didn't need either way. I'm glad I prepared by stocking up on certain things, but the start date and the conviction were the most important preparation. Good luck, and keep me updated! You might enjoy reddit/r/makeuprehab too. xoxoxo!

I did an accidental sort of shop my stash. I knew I was going to move and have quite a large makeup collection, so I packed up more than half of my collection about two months prior to the move, just to get a head start on packing. When I did finally move in and unpack my makeup, I was SO happy to see those items again. (I legitimately hugged them and showed my boyfriend all my palettes and was like I MISSED THEM). After that experience, I think shopping my stash is something I need to do more often. As you said, it's so nice to appreciate those items as if they are brand new!

💕😊I have been watching many of your videos lately and this came up on my recommendation list💕😀 Many of your tools and concepts in your no buy year videos have applied to my No Alcohol choice. Alcohol / No alcohol is a sensitive topic (I’ve encountered with) and always hesitate to comment about it when watching a review. However, your concept on “not trying, but doing” conviction is so true and I just want to comment that I appreciate you sharing your conviction with us in this video. I too made the conviction 10 months ago and I have learned so much about myself in this journey. I was drawn to your thought process shared in this that I felt the need of sharing my no alcohol conviction. I found my self sanity and my family were my motivation for my No Alcohol conviction and I am finding myself enjoying the ‘pieces’ (aka my world around me) in my own collection (aka ‘my life’) 😀 I very much appreciate your work and am grateful in you sharing your work with us. Thank you 😀💕

I'm not specifically doing a no-buy, but it's a bit of a default setting for me while I'm in grad school - only buying things I need and occasional items for my hobbies that keep me sane. That being said, however, I recently had an interesting experience that showed me how easily I could fall into the trap of feeling the need for more and more and more. My husband had a bunch of Amazon gift cards, and in exchange for being doing the work to purchase some new socks and underwear for him (such a cliche, I know!), he didn't care how I spent the rest of the credit. Between that mini shopping spree of buying items I've longed for for possibly years (like a specific cook book, a new tea strainer, and a hair dryer to replace my broken one) as well as a spurt of birthdays which resulted in more buying, I got in the habit of purchasing fun things! Now that there are no bdays for a while and no more Amazon gift cards, I definitely feel the effects of even that short amount of activity and catch myself perusing the internet for things I want. So, maybe I should say that I'm officially kind of on a no-buy, since I'm feeling like there's a lack in my life where there previously wasn't, AND I have no viable way to buy extra stuff outside of the health and safety category. I also understand that there's actually no lack and my brain is just searching for that reward that I briefly gave it, but the *feelings* are definitely there. So congrats on making it a 1/4 way through! You're doing awesome, and it'll be interesting to see what you note as you delve further into the year - how your brain adapts to the new normal and what shifts in your life and habits as the no-buy sets in more deeply.

omg, I totally know what you mean about the "buying habit." I feel like I had that habit for years. It's hard to break, it's addictive, especially with online shopping. LOL about the socks and underwear!!

The way you said you approached the no buy year is how I approached vganism and it was easy to do when I decided what I wanted to do. Many people do what they want and they always say they could never go vegan. I’m like you never wanted to!

Your eye look is beautiful. And that purple eye with that rust colored top is stunning! You have such a clear and lovely aesthetic. I also loved what you said about experimenting with products you already own instead of buying new. I love to play with makeup, but I often find that I do the same look with each palette because I own so many, rather than using one or two and trying and combining them in new and interesting ways. The Jaclyn Hill palette for example-I’ve used it a lot but I always do the same warm crease with pinky or bronze lid. As much as I love color it never occurred to me to try the purple or blue! I’m not giving myself time to love my products. Hence the 6-month low-Buy I’ve set for myself. And this video just made me even more excited.

I loved what you said about conviction. About deciding to do. I think that avoids using will power which is limited resource. So the more conviction you have the less willpower you need. I’ve been thinking about this a lot with regard to working out and eating better. For example, it’s not hard to be vegetarian if you choose that lifestyle because it’s what you are. You become your convictions. So if I have that same level of conviction about not eating sugar, it takes no willpower. Thank you for your thoughts. I love your check ins.
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
this is such an interesting way to frame it, and I've also seen it to be very true in food! Just trying to "eat less sugar" can be such a struggle with willpower. But when I am able to essentially change my identity to someone who doesn't eat sugar, it becomes so much easier. Sometimes the switch flips back for a bit, and I have to work to muster the conviction again, but once I get it, it's so effective.

Oh, the struggles of the warm crease and cool-tone pop of color...so, I totally agree with everything you said a couple videos ago about this. But at the same time, BECAUSE they are complimentary colors on the spectrum, the "sunset eye" can be so striking and GORGEOUS. Like what you have right here. I have pale skin like you and I find that even though shadows blend together better when they are the same tone, if I have all cool colors on my eye, I feel like it makes me look sad or tired. ?? I don't know, I'm still learning what works on my face.

Awww, Sadie!! I lost Her Royal Felineness, Emma Grace, some months ago, (she was almost 15 year old), so I love seeing Sadie. HRF Emma Grace was my Rubenesque queen, (she also allowed "voluptuous" or "buxom" for descriptors), and I miss acting as her lady-in-waiting desperately. Thank you for sharing Sadie with us!! 💗

This month was a bust for my budget. Ran out of everything and was getting miserable without my staple skincare items. Happy to find cheaper options in makeup but not skincare eg. Spf, oil. Realised I needed to adjust my budget to replenish these items even though I'd go over...my budget needs to work for the year and the goal is to pay off my loan not make myself miserable /rash by calling the whole thing off. Anyhoo, I'm moving towards replacing items as u do. More sustainable budgeting xx
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
I totally agree that skincare is not the place to cut corners. And I think budget adjustment is absolutely reasonable. I'm the same...not trying to ruin my life, just trying to change habits! It's so wise to adjust instead of pushing yourself so hard that you end up giving up. I think you can pay off your loan AND have your skincare, as long as the budget is balanced and you stick to it. Good luck this month!! Thanks for commenting! xo!

I took 6 weeks off of RU-vid. I'm catching up on your videos now. LOL I have really been prudent deciding on which purchases are wants and needs. The amount of product that I am going through is mind blowing. I used to think it took forever to finish a product. But when I only have 1 of something, I actually finish it. Currently, I am saving all the empties so I can reflect back on it all at the end of the year. The goal is consume less. I am trying to stay out of stores. No amazon.com, no target, no cvs, no sephora.com. I haven't been perfect but I'm happy with my progress!
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
Staying out of stores REALLY helps. I sometimes browse a little, just for fun, but it's so much less exciting now, and it only increases the chances I'll see something I wan't but can't buy. And I totally agree, the rate at which we actually go through things is amazing! It sounds like you are doing really well with your prudent ways :) Thanks for commenting!

So, I broke my nobuy and bought a dress. It is a great dress, wonderful bargain on vinted and I bought it out of FOMO. No the spell is broken and I don't know why I wanted it so badly. It will be a great dress for summer but I basically start from scratch with the nobuy and I wouldn't rather have bought it... But apart from that it is ok. Playing with colour combinations and the concept of the star piece is fun. I found a challenge on Hannah Wittons channel about wearing nothing more than 3 times in thirty days and not pairing 2 garments together more than one time. Thinking about doing this before the start of spring.

You are doing great on your no buy! It’s great how you are taking note of your finances too. My no buy/low buy is going well! From my low buy categories, I am picking up some items during the Ulta sale (I haven’t yet though) but it’s not a bunch of random things just because it’s on sale. Same with the Sephora sale. It’s all going to be well thought out purchases, no spur of the moment items just because I can get a discount. It’s nice that you received three bottles of perfume for your birthday. I have a bunch of perfume and body spray that I enjoy, but new perfume is a no buy. I have enough to keep me busy for awhile, plus samples. And Ive discovered how very long a 3.4 ounce bottle of perfume lasts. But one day at a time! I’m enjoying wearing this particular one during the week, and the weekend is my choice to rotate!
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
Yay! It sounds like you are doing amazing! Thanks for the update. I haven't addressed the sales yet...I guess the Sephora sale will be in April, so that will be interesting. I agree that the key is buying things you really want/need, not just a bunch of things that are on sale. What's the weekday perfume that you're loving?

About the blue light filtering glasses, if you have a Mac, you may be able to download an app that will filter out the blue light from your screen. It's probably called "night mode" or something and it should be free. I'm not totally sure if that scientifically works, but you could give it a try before buying something.
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
Good idea! I will totally look into it! I also think I need to go up a step in magnification, but if I find another way to solve the computer light issue, I could buy much less expensive reading glasses.

I am watching your No Buy videos because I am into a minimalist lifestyle. I have never really worn much make-up at all ever, so I haven't watched any of your make-up videos but I would be very interested to see what you look like with absolutely no make. -up on at all...have you ever done that on RU-vid? I find people are usually so much more beautiful with no makeup on.

Hi Hannah! I’m new to ur channel. I’m also try a no buy year. I live in Dubai n I work from home so I love makeup but I can’t wear it at home on days I’m free. I might be visiting US at the end of the year...approximately when is the time that Sephora does their sale? I’ll be a first time customer to Sephora USA so do I also get 20% or something lesser? Just wanted to know incase the sale time doesn’t coincide with my travel dates then I can pick up stuff from Dubai & get point on UAE Sephora card...thanks 😘😘😘😘
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
I don't know anything about how Sephora works internationally! Sorry. I think you have to be VIB Rouge to get the 20% off, but I'm not sure if your purchases in Dubai count towards your status (I'd guess that they do)? The sale is usually in November.

Hannah Louise Poston yes I’m wasn’t sure what status of the Sephora card would I have to have to avail the 20% that’s y was confirming with u. Also I will be visiting the states at the end of the year so I’ll just see if the sale is open to all n if it’s available when I’m there. Thx for the reply! ❤️❤️❤️

I've watched quite a lot of your videos now and it's hitting me that you're happy to spend so much more money than I am. I would never spend that much on a top but you talk about it like it's not that much money. I may most my make up and skin care from drugstores and would spend months deciding whether or not to buy a £30 foundation, but you drop more than that on a whim. I can't get my head around how differently we view money.

yes, when it comes to thriftyness and spendiness, there is a huge diversity among us! I think it also changes over time. My no-buy has made me reconsider how much is too much to spend on makeup and clothes.
