March Of The Pigs | Nine Inch Nails | Gothik Serpent Cover 

With its Johnny Cash-style locomotive drum beat, 7/4 time signature and rage-fueled guitars and vocals, March Of The Pigs, off The Downward Spiral, is one of my favorite Nine Inch Nails tunes and a masterclass in the ability of Trent Reznor to pack incredible dynamics and simplicity in just three minutes.
For the Gothik Serpent cover, I wanted to modernize the sound without dramatic alterations to song structure or melody. Of particular note is the use of a Spector Coda with EMG pickups, which tremendously beefs up the sound thanks to how much it punches through dense layers of guitars.
Despite its simplicity, the song contains a surprising amount of samples and electronics stashed in various pockets of the mix, and majority of my time was spent studying these elements for the cover. One of the things I learned is that even in guitar and drum-heavy NIN tunes like this, these electronics are what separate Nine Inch Nails' sound from other more conventional rock groups.
