Marcin Żmudzki, USA representative of Maidan Monitoring Information Center on March 17, 2024 spoke at a Russian anti-Putin street protest in front of the Russian embassy in Washington, D.C.
He wrote:
I urged the Russians to not only advocate for democracy and against corruption in their home country, but also to openly and loudly renounce Russia’s imperialist past traditions and current ambitions.
If pro-democracy Russians do not stop clinging on to the notion that Russia’s neighboring nations constitute Moscow’s rightful sphere of influence or, even worse, a part of “greater Russia,” then Russia and its neighbors will end up fighting many more wars, over and over again, and hundreds thousands of people from Russia and its neighboring countries will keep dying, like they are dying now due to Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified and illegal invasion of Ukraine.
Based on the responses I received from the crowd gathered in front of the Russian embassy, it seemed that the Russians who use the white-blue-white flag as their rallying flag consciously want to depart from Russia’s past imperial policies. But there needs to be many more of such good Russians to make a difference. Many, many more.
