I love how no one wants to clap loud cuz its so hard to keep that time signature going. I'm a guitar player first and foremost so for me this is just crazy lol.
Saw Marco on Tour with Satch in Sheffield, UK, at the weekend: what a great drummer! Really enjoyed his playing. The whole show was an example of live music done right. Thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable. Marco kicked off the show with a solo. Very cool. :)
Im getting back into drumming afrer 18years! I never heard of this guy! this guys wicked with wicked speed!!!! (the same T. Lang or is Long and Mike Portnoy)
It's surreal when you meet your heroes in the flesh isn't it? You see videos, pictures, and then suddenly they are there in front of you; a person just like your or me, even though that's what you were expecting, something still gets you, it's weird.
@Maddolis I'm a DT fan, and a die hard one. But I have to admit i hadn't really listened to Marco play until he auditioned for DT, and i really appreciate his playing. It's good that he's getting more popularity for actually being good rather than just trying out for DT, and in my opinion he should've been chosen.
@Kudan26 Sure you can. I hadn't come across 13/16 until watching this video- but you could completely syncopate 2/4 by counting 123 123 12 instead of 1234 1234, though it wouldn't be called 2/4 at that point. I'm not sure if 13/16 is meant to be counted 1234 1234 12 123 by default or if it's just the way Marco does it- just as 5/4 is meant to be 123 12, but is very often also counted 12 123...
@oldcrappymcweaksauce I'm glad he's getting fans that appreciate Dream Theater, because generally they have at least a half-decent ear for music. Perhaps it's a metal thing- if a ton of Lady Gaga fans were suddenly turned on to a respectable metal band through an ad or something I wouldn't feel completely comfortable. Anyway as I stated earlier, my concern is with the comments based on "Marco vs X," rather than "wow I haven't heard of Marco but he's great," which I completely support.
There was a reason behind the decision. Macro has done amazing things with The Aristocrats and Steven Wilson. I wouldn't change that for the world. I hope you've heard what he's done!
@Kudan26 Well you have the breaking down of the first part of it, to count it, all it takes is to go back to 4/4 time, counting it 1 2 3 4, all being quarter notes, then to eighth notes taking the 1 2 3 4 and making it 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 counting the "ands" as notes so it would be 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 if that makes any sense. Then, you would take the original 4/4 and make it 1 e an a 2 e an a 3 e an a 4 e an a, making each "e an a" it's own note making it 1 2 3 4 much faster but in the same tempo.
@lygophile Marco is so awesome in this video. The groove is so good you're like.... "I am going to learn that shit. For reals.", and then he eats it alive and you're left considering whether or not you should bother.
@MulletMan3108 If you watch videos, you will notice that Marco is not so sure to be part of DT...he didnt want the job so much...Petrucci was more happy about Marco than Mike...he said to Marco "you are an incredible man"...thing that he didnt said about Mike... I dont know if he refused, but I'm sure that he did the best audition...
this is really tough stuff, but i hardly see a musical sens behind it. It's like Stick flips and stuff. Just "show" (am actually not comparing 13/16th to stick-tricks :P) never the less awesome!
@BrokenWingman I'm not hating on anyone! I just think DT's musical skill blinds people to the fact that their songs are average. Of course, they only sound average to my ears, but every view is subjective. Marco M could be in bands that are more interesting, in my book, so there are better 'homes' out there for him.
@vlastion Every band is average in the eyes of those who don't appreciate the artist. However, unti one can accept the flaws of something, can they truely learn to appreciate it.
@Kudan26 ... I suppose you could count 13/16 as 1234 1234 1234 1, but seeing as a beat made up solely of one semiquaver is too short and would limit the musicality, counting the last two beats as 12 123 makes perfect sense- as would 123 12.
@lonewolf604 That's cause he's too amazed to clap, lol. He was doing it right with everybody else for like 3 seconds and then he just stops and stares.
