In this video, Marcus was at the Big House in Macon, GA, where the Allman Brothers Band lived together for a spell. It’s now a museum to the band. He’s actually playing Duane Allman’s ‘57 Goldtop, that Duane famously played on the Layla album. Marcus is the man!
I love how Michael gets so caught up in the music that he just can't help himself but to try and play something complimentary along with whatever he's listening to
Seen a lot of shows but standing ten feet from the edge of the stage in a half full theater watching this kid a couple years back was in the top five. Everything he does is phenomenal and his band was top notch too. So much soul in his playing and chord choices.
With a voice similar to Janis Joplin in a lot a ways, and his killer guitar playing, he's one of my favorite artists, he's mastered the accompany of his singing by his brilliant use of chords shapes, stabs, single note lines, ect. so much to learn from every song he plays, his timing, touch, and dynamics are spot on, just an awesome player and singer.
Interesting you say that….I saw him a few yrs back in Charlotte, and I told my wife he sounds like Janis and makes runs like Stevie Wonder. I agree with you man, he’s frighteningly good.
When I first listened to Marcus King I drawn to his vocal sound and style. He is definitely an artist that you recognize as soon as he started singing.
Micheal, your talent at breaking down very top notch playing is impressive and very helpful. I wish you continued success. Look forward to the next one
He used to play at a local bar in my hometown. Rumors at the time were he was about to sign on Warren Haynes record label so the place was packed. We were able to meet and talk with him, extremely humble guy. About 6 months later he was on tour with Tedeschi Trucks band and we were able to see him again in a much bigger setting.
Michael it would be great to get a live reaction on what you just experienced right after you leave the show. I know you’ve listened to him a bit but man the whole live show is just next level mind-blowing, face-melting stuff. Every time I see MK live I feel like I’m witnessing music history go down. Very thankful to get to experience this during my lifetime.
Thanks for reacting to my request Michael! I’m going to see Marcus in Nashville next week. If you needed anything else to get you pumped for the show (doubtful haha) or just want more killer musicianship, check out his cover of Superstar by The Carpenters. Thanks for all you do, these videos are great!
Craziest thing about it is Marcus King was only 20 or 21 years old right here!!! It was the first video of his I saw and was hooked! Got to see him at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle and he put on a clinic for 2½hours!! Brought friends up to play and couldn't have been more humble and just a nice dude! Wish him all the success! And thank you Michael for the video and all your amazing talent! I'd love to hear/see more of you performing cuz you got it too brother!!
I have said it before and I will again, Mr Palmisano, I love your breakdowns of songs like these, you literally make tunes like this doable to people like myself who just can't grasp theory and what I like to call adult chords lol. Your enthusiasm is infectious. (Maybe not the best descriptive I could have used in this day and time) but still the point like the groove remains. I know I don't post often but what I say in my comments i sincerely mean. Thank You for staying at it and sharing your hard earned knowledge. You're tops Brother
I got to meet Marcus year before last in Birmingham, AL. We were front stage. I could literally touch their speakers. Got to talk to him after the show. My wife even got a picture with his fiance. It was one of the best nights of my life. Super humble guy!
Hey Mike, great vid. Small suggestion... throw the link to whatever video you are reviewing in the description! A lot of times I find myself watching your video, and then wanting to listen to the original all the way through after, would be great to have a link to the exact one you're watching!
Love Marcus King. He’s got so much potential musically speaking. Marcus was discovered at a very well known Music Store- named Norman Rear guitars in California. He was 18 back then. One of the employees was perplexed by his guitar playing & vocals. Needless to say he opened a You Tube channel & had thousands of viewers. I love El Dorado album. I luckily met him. In Nashville and look forward seeing him in October for my birthday here in New Orleans. He is gonna be playing at The Filmore. Thanks for what you do. Very helpful for guitar students showing which chords to play.
Awesome breakdown. Marcus does have a formal training in Jazz theory. He will throw some jazz bones while in blues mode. That makes him sound a little different that a lot of good guitar players!
He sure is the real deal. Just been watching a bunch of videos of Marcus playing with Tedeschi Trucks Band. Derek never looks happier than when he's watching Marcus play, and to me that says it all!
Yeah and I'm glad someone took him to the side and told him to articulate his lyrics, even if it was himself that picked up on it... Couldn't understand a word he was singing in some of his live performances.
Naahhh, he's far better at guitar than vocals. He doesn't show it off much cuz he's so busy pursuing the singer-songwriter shit but go back and look at some old clips when he was touring with his band. He's a guitar god.
@Bill Gadol Sorry but I have to disagree. He's not gaining any traction with his singing/songwriting. The thing that made him stand out was not his lawyer dad blues singing, it was his exceptional guitar playing.
He's a great talent, one of a kind both vocally & his guitar chops. Rarely if ever does somebody come along with the total package like Marcus, that i believe we can all agree
@Michael Palmisano Thanks for another killer breakdown and exposing us to incredible musicianship! I learned about Marcus through your earlier reactions and was thrilled when I found out that he was opening for Chris Stapleton last Saturday for a show I bought tickets for a while back. Marcus’s way of playing fiery blues licks and also playing through chord changes is outstanding. He rocked his signature ES-345, a Tele, and a Les Paul Custom through an Orange Rockerverb 50 and Super Reverb head like he was the baddest guitarist ever. You’re gonna love seeing him live!
I've been obsessed with Marcus King lately, just two days ago I went on a binge of all his good videos on youtube, and all your reactions to him. Sugaree was an absolute delight. Now seeing this in my feed makes me so happy. Rock and Marcus and rock on Michael, you guys are champs
So happy I found your channel. Being a huge long time fan of Marcus just recently was trying to analyze this song (Dying) thinking WHY this C major 7 to A7 sounds so sweet here. Thanks for explanation Michael! I wish I was in Baltimore these days... Thanks again. Subscribed.
Going out of my way from South Florida to see Stapleton in Memphis on his tour, just because MKB is the opening act (he is not the opener for the shows down here unfortunately). Probably my favorite current artist. So talented and has a great band with with him too!
Was great meeting Michael at the Marcus King show in Baltimore last night! It was the BEST live performance I think I’ve ever seen. We talked about the pocket… well this band is in the pocket the entire set. You can actually hear the non verbal communication between the band mates. The conversation between them allows Marcus to just go off on an entirely new level!
I just discovered Marcus on this video and he’s very good! Nice choice of video,Mr. Palmisano! I have been following a kid from Australia named Taj Farrant. Marcus reminds me of him!
Somehow got a ticket for the Saturday show and got to see the Trio while I had the night off in Baltimore. I’ve been obsessed for years, learned of him while going to Musicians Institute in 2015 but have never been able to see him live yet. Finally got to see him last night and it was as close to a religious experience I’ve ever had. Will not be the last time, but wow I’m still pretty shocked from that experience last night. You’re in for such a treat with full band tonight I wish I could make it 😭
half joking with my employer trying to book a flight back home to B'more from clearwater fl {during the southwest airline october suprise}...said its only 14hrs 3 min drive. We cant make the Sat show but have plenty of time for sunday...lol here we still sit preparing to fly by mon morning with a layover on a 2hr flight. Loving the intricacy of Marcus sound only from video captures at the beacon with TTB .. and go Michael with that energy to bring it on home with the treasure of understanding and teaching .
NEED your reaction on Sin is a Good Man’s Brother by the Marcus King, it’s such a great cover of Grand Funk Railroad, I’m not sure if they were the originals to do it, but Mark Farner was a king!!
Got to see him at a bar in Charleston in 2015 before he was big. My friend Bryan Holmes (drummer from The Producers, Kansas) shared a video and he was playing at my bar the next night. Super timing. Seen him several times since. He’s just amazing. And Warren Haynes produced his second album.
I had never heard of Marcus, until I saw him opening for Chris Stapleton in MA a few weekends ago. Blew me AWAY. Promptly bought all his stuff. Reminds me a lot of Warren Haynes
Tons of guys have chops, killer chops, but guys like Marcus, Josh Smith, [Bloomfield(!) decades ago] have vocabularies. Their story-telling with the same 12-notes we all have access to is inimitable. Clapton could just turn blues-phrases inside-,out; that's why he was 'God.' Marcus is in that pantheon of greatness. Only gonna get better...
Michael, your excitement and willingness to express how awesome this guy is means so much to me personally!!! You both are amazing and I thank you for this moment to learn and be a part of it!! Best channel on RU-vid belongs to you sir!! WOW!!! and I'm just a drummer!!!!
Did someone notice the POLICE SIREN in the background when Marcus begins to sing ??? Maybe even when he says the word "pain" ??? This is adding heavy feelings on the song... IMHO. By the way, absolutely gorgeous song and of course hands down to Marcus King ;) Thank you Michael for helping us to understand... this is so useful when you need to move on...
when you say the 3rd gives us the function . I agree but then explain the theory behind the dominant 7 chord. 1 b3 5 b7. surely that tells us both major and minor pen ( so therefore dorian and mixolydian) also work. the 3rd (for me) dictates( i agree) unless we are dominant
I discovered this guy through one of your other videos, red wine and flowers or something like that, haven't stopped listening to him since - amazing player and comes across as a really nice guy in interviews
The 6th is the 3rd in your 4 Chord! Brilliant Imma always remember that now… Let me say great ride through that! Let’s not forget to Mention Marcus absolutely incredible vocals on this track! ❤️🎸
Pretty sure that was one of Duane Allmans guitars too. Marcus is awesome, hoping you do another one of his soon, Hopefully one of his older jazz jams. Jealous of your sunday!
The joy I have watching michaels reaction to those stinky smelly Marcus chords. Smiling ear to ear. Thank you sir I can’t read music or memorize crazy chords but I know where I’m at on the neck and once I see someone play it I can. Appreciate the vids michael
To those who have never heard of Marcus need to check that man out. His lyrics, his voice, and his guitar playing are next level. Once you start listening to him you will👏🏻not👏🏻stop👏🏻
TRUTH - I am late to this party because I was born in the 60's and not really into the so called "music" nowadays - gimme Zeppelin, Skynyrd, Clapton, SRV any day of the week but came across this (thank you Michael) and this guy has "it" period. I'm now a huge Marcus fan!
Great breakdown Michael! I recently passed on 2 chances to see him nearby on this tour with Stapleton. One at Oak Mountain Amphitheater in Pelham AL, the other at The Warf in Gulf Shores the next night, both great venues. Deal Breaker? Tickets were $325.00... Unreal!
Saw him 9/28 in a small, tight venue. Went alone cause I just couldn’t miss it. I’d go alone 10 more times if I had to! (I posted one of his solos from that night on my page - enjoy! 🌹)
Love Marcus. I've always thought of him as one of this generation's great front men who shines as a band leader. In my mind, he's more comparable to Terry Kath than anyone else, although he's already two years older than Terry when Chicago Transit Authority was released.
These guys just keep coming up through the mud like they always have. Despite the times. Popular culture. I'd have dug it 50 years ago, man. Maybe I can die in peace with a few more like this.
