people who write negative things about other people need to see a therapist it just shows how unhappy they are with themselves that they would go through all this trouble to write someone hate mail.
I think Margaret is a pioneer & racism is not taken seriously when anyone of Asian decent is the target. I have always found Margaret to be very pretty. She is a natural activist & I think that when any person gets political in their work the simple-minded tend to attack the obvious. She is also really big on gay rights/gay issues which sends some people into an absolute uproar. It doesn't matter how successful she is or how much money she has, when people attack you for simply being you the feeling is shitty. I am a gay man & I know what that feels like. I love the fact that she posts the email addresses of these assholes on her website. If you can't dish it in, don't dish it out!
This was 2009 and now after 10 years, we finally have Crazy Rich Asians, Kims Convenience, and Fresh off the Boat! Still ways to go though. Keep the good work! Margaret!!!
Margaret is honestly one of my heroes. She's funny, strong, talented, and doesn't take any crap. There are so few women in stand up that I can look up to so I'm really glad she's there to empower women. :)
People say mean things on the web because they hide behind a screen. They don't take responsibility for their actions. I bet most of them don't have the guts to say what they do on the web in real life. When I do read things like that in forums it makes me disgusted that these people are living in our society and they are not helping to make it better.
+tashmarie20 Well spoken. It's a sick world. Thought provokes action and that is a scary thing considering. Even though these people will not say blatant racial epithets in person, because they know better for their sake and not for mine, their everyday actions will betray these attitudes in a myriad subtle ways. Wonder why as a person of color, you may feel that people are cooly dismissive for instance, or you sense some strange disingenuousness? Never underestimate the significance of subtle hatred just beneath the surface.
"When I first realized I wasn't white" omg I just had that realization last year and it has blown my mind! I've had to replay all my memories and see them now for what they really are, and I've come to the realization that I was never quite "accepted" like I would have been had I been white...and I say this because I grew up in a white family and so always saw myself as such, but now I know people didn't see it the same way when they looked at me
It's appalling how people can hate an innocent and unprovoked Margaret just for being Asian. It's totally beyond me. There are a lot of sick people in this world.
I love Margaret Cho! I was in the military for 5 years and traveled all over the world, Japan, Thailand, the Phillipines, trust me there are a lot, and I mean a lot of beautiful Asian women
dear Margret I feel your pain growing up as a foster child in a all African American house I was in shock when our next door neighbors told me I was white
2:44 I'm so glad she pointed out that racism is «just beneath the surface of polite society». It's gratifying to hear I'm not alone, to hear someone else acknowledge the hypocrisy. I've crossed countless people who think they're entitled to order around some ethnic «Other» in public space - as long as they end their sentences with a «Thank you» or fit a friendly word like «nice» somewhere in a judgemental or racist statement, they somehow come out an untouchable, moral pilar.
Also, Grace Park and Masi Oka from Heroes and H5-0! ;) Many more around! In addition, recently, People's Magazine declared Steven Yeun as Sexy Man of the Week!
I have a solution to the lack of Asian representation in the US media. Take various Asian TV shows (you know them Asian dramas, comedies, and movies made in Asian countries like Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, and etc), bring them overseas, dub them in English (or use English subtitles) and put them on certain US cable channels so more people can get exposed to Asian and Asian entertainment (hell even shows made in non-Asian countries but star a lot of Asian characters and actors like Canada). So overtime interest will increase and more US studios will make shows of a similiar flavor to appeal to the Asian demographic or people interested in such stuff. That is what happened to anime in the west. Also, play more Asian songs on TV like how they did for PSY. That is what I got.
+DarkEdge1231 I don't think that's the solution at all. Exposure works in some ways, but it's only going to reinforce the stereotype that Asians are perpetual foreigners. We need shows depicting Asian Americans acting like ordinary human beings without the cliched racial overtures. I don't think the problem is that people haven't seen enough of us, but that they've only seen us as white media wants us to be, that is: clowns, buffoons, nerds, powerless, fanatic, foreign, enslaved, colonized, sexualized or de sexualized, and inhumane.
Don't think that's the solution either. America needs Asian representation of all types of Asians. I'm not just talking nationality. Asians who lived stateside for so long. White Hollywood when they think of adding an Asian character more likely to think traditional Asian. Traditional in ways and they may speak their language etc. There are lots of Asians in the U.S. who some refer to as Americanized. No longer or never learned their native language and or not as traditional as most would expect. etc., It could be a positive exposing Hollywood to another culture. But at the same time I think great here's another thing people expect all Asians are. Especially if I was still a teen. What is presented in Asian shows (meaning produced in Asia by Asians) are not necessarily like all Asian people in America though maybe some.
@@shalala8297 How about giving Asian people good representation that they absolutely deserve by creating your own Asian characters with their own good personalities and you also have these Asian characters change Asian representation by having all of these Asian characters protray Asian people just like themselves as very sweet,gentle,loving,caring,humble,nice,friendly,good,passive,kind,polite,well-mannered,respectful,well-educated,smart,well-spoken,patient,genius,serious,tough,open-minded,generous,helpful,thoughtful,selfless,good-hearted,sweet-natured,nurturing,sweetful,good-natured,understanding people in a very good, sweet, gentle, loving, positive, understanding light without using any negative Asian stereotypes that Asian people are also usually portrayed in television shows and movies at all too.Does anyone else agree with me?.
Just got finished watching this piece on Julie Chen., and I must say as a whole our nation has gotten better. But sadly racism is still alive and well. To the other 99% this American loves you and together we can overcome anything! Mitakiyasin! We are all related.
OH MY GOD! This is so true! I'm Japanese and every American asks, "ARE YOU CHINESE?! DO YOU EAT WITH CHOPSTICKS?!" News flash not every Asian person is Chinese. It's like asking a hispanic person if they're mexican.
I love Margeret Cho mostly because of her pride. I was often teased for being Asian in school, Taiwanese in fact, and admittedly, it was hard for me to grow up in America. It was only because I lived in an area with more Asians around that I was comfortable enough. Racism is disgusting. I don't understand why so many people disrespect other cultures just because they're different.
@sandinyourshoes yea for sure, completely true, i think its because i was reading it and understanding the word in the context it was use, so i didn't even think about it
@hwiley09 I don't know very many asian people but my uncle is half Filipino and I love him and his family. Very loving, kind people. As well as my roommate and friend that I worked w/ this summer. She was always so warm toward me and engaged me in interesting conversation about her home and university, etc. I just wish people would learn to see that we're all human, no matter how different we look. But idk I guess w/ the way the world is today, this sort of hatred is to be expected.
Margaret Cho is such a strong individual, I love her on Diva (Lifetime), wish she had a bigger part but happy to see her on the show. It is sad how there are people who can not get to the intellectual level Margaret Cho's subject are about and choose to be racist. She is an inspiration to all races, to be strong, do what you love, do not let anyone hold you back, be successful and bring your dreams to reality.
I love Margaret Cho. I'm white but my cousins are asian and it makes me angry to see what kind of things they have to deal with within school, social interactions and now in the work world.
I am white and I am proud I am not ashamed of who I am and nor do I think others are inferior in all actuality I think everyone is equally as awesome Black Asian Hispanic middle Eastern etc we are all awesome we should all be proud and not hate eachother!
This video just made me love her beyond the level i did...shes a tough, funny and real cookie...i loveeee her. she cant be perfect for nobody but her BEAUTIFUL SELF. i mean how sick are you to have the guts to be seated, focus your face on your PC monitor and start typing such hideous things?not even a four floor phamarcy can save you. im black and from south africa....see this all the time
Ok, to all the Margaret Cho fans out there: She was in an amazing 6-part miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel. The show was called The Lost Room and it's so good! She plays the part of an artifact locator, and she's so fricking great! Plus, the show is my favorite sci-fi. They should make it into a real series.
An educated, well-rounded person has an open mind. The world is changing whether you like it or not. I'm not saying everyone should agree with me, I just don't think you should belittle people because of their race. I shouldn't have to explain that to such an 'intellectual', they should already know that. It's disappointing that some people still don't in 2013.
There is totally no difference in people, because of color. I am Native American, my husband is White, so my son is half Native American and half White. And our adopted daughter is Japanese. There is no difference in my wonderful children, and anyone who treats them differently, is missing out on really wonderful people in their lives. I love culture, that is why I speak five different languages, not because I want to be so well educated, but I want to speak with Everyone I can.
i love chinese, asian, native, black, white, everybodi it dont matter what color u r!!! i love u even if u dont know me or dont like me!!!!!!!!!! love u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
