The movie's message was good and I enjoyed how it handled home life, loneliness and depression but I couldn't relate to Miyo. She was too much at times. I felt like she depended on her crush to the point of co-dependency. Her whole happiness was put on this one boy who she knew was having problems of his own and I can't get over the fact that she put so much weight on him. I wished the movie dialled back on her fixation a little, I would have believed the romance more and the flow of the plot.

As a cat owner, I was very touched at (spoilers) the thought of a cat trading for a longer lifespan so they could return the happiness I gave them for longer, compounded by how affected her owner was because she went missing, and deciding to change back. My heart.

Credit where it's due, this is one of the few times I give Netflix its props for simply giving this a home in times like these. Anime movies not based on a series already have a hard time outside of Japan, and with everything that's been going on it would've been suicide to try anything other than streaming. Also on the topic of the film, like in a true Mari Okada fashion, there were parts I was leaking face water.

The fantasy sections were the best parts in my opinion? To me the romance aspect was a little weak - I felt like Mio was just fixating on Hinode to distract from feeling unloved by her family, and he was just going with the flow and seemed like he couldn't differentiate between liking someone as a friend versus liking someone romantically.

The impression I initially got was that the romance was intentionally shallow to drive home the fact that it was a fiction made up by Muge herself; she was incredibly dissatisfied with her fractured home-life, felt abandoned by both her parents and her best friend and now had no one she could relate to about her feelings. Suddenly, she's put into the position of being able to hear one of her peers speak unrestrained about their own frustrations and off of that she builds a false romance narrative to satisfy her own desire for emotional intimacy and as a distraction from having to deal with her own problems at home. Her own identity also starts to blur with that of being a cat though that's probably also a response to her situation at home, having to be around her step-mum and all that. Hinode meanwhile is unaware of all this and faces his own issues of gross expectations put onto him by his mother due to their finanical situation (which is beyond his comprehension) and seeks respite in pottery as a creative outlet, the pottery studio acting as a sort of juxtapose against the stifling atmosphere of his family home (which seemed very traditional in design, suggesting that it's a proper ancestral home which only adds to the discomfort he feels there). Based off of all this, I was fully expecting Muge to eventually have to face the music and confront her issues at home, learns to talk about her feelings instead of bottling them up, stops being a cat and reaches a sort of climax with Hinode where she recognizes that she doesn't actually know him as a person and, instead of regularly hinting at her love for him, extends an offer of friendship instead (with hints of future romances since this is an anime movie). Hinode would deal with his issues as well, would accept Muge's friendship (especially after finding out she was the cat); I was actually hoping that the movie wouldn't bullshit a reason why they would be able to keep the pottery studio and that Hinode would instead accept the responsibility put on him while also still pursuing his creative outlet possibly via pottery classes or something similar. From the moment Muge went missing to the end of the movie felt like one big misstep to me and a massive disregard for what preceded it. It'd have been different if the fantasy parts were captivating but truthfully I found them boring and the transition to them very jarring. I didn't need 10 minutes of cat-humans talking about how depressed they are while the mask dealer (who was a weak and unnecessary 'villain') danced around talking about lifespans. I didn't care about any of that, I was more interested in the characters who we had been watching for the first 2/3rds of the movie. Also sorry for the text dump, just felt like ranting about the movie. It was pretty good, I liked the buildup and I appreciated the great use of 3-D animation but it fell flat imo.

I only watched till the part where she disappeared.. So, I don't know how her parents are portrayed in the rest of the movie. But as far as I watched, she wasn't unloved.. Her step mom was trying her best to get along with her and help her open up to the whole family... They never ignored her.. Her own mother was kinda "ugh" but other than that I actually didn't find any major problem in her life... Only that she wasn't getting enough attention from the guy she loved who was obviously dealing with his own problem and pressures much more bigger than hers with only a cat to confide in... And as for her mom problem, that should be more of a reason for her to open up to her step mom or a friend.. Like she wasn't even trying to get into her family....

@@raygardner5721 She definitely wasn't unloved, but she felt unloved. To the audience its pretty clear that her family loves her, but she thinks that they just see her as an outsider and an obstacle to their new happy life as a couple.

I 100% agree with kumiko. The anime didn't stand out unlike Penguin Highway which i very love. I also lost it when the fantasy ghibli like part came. I still think it's a good movie though, just not as good enough as the previous Studio Colorido movie. I gave Penguin Highway 10/10 and I had to give A Whisker Away 7/10.

I feel like the other cats needed to be humans because they needed to connect with her story but also have sympathy for her because that sympathy will make them want to help her. I feel like they were also there to give her some wisdom and teach her that life is precious and she’s lucky to be a human.

This film felt very much like ghibli's "The Cat Returns" to me. With the narrative fleshing out Muge's discontent so we have a more rounded understanding of why being a cat is so appealing to her. While - and it's been a while since I've watched "The Cat Returns" - Haru isn't really given such a motivation she has vague discontent over her crush, and excitement over this new world but "The Cat Returns" is more of a lighter adventure than "A Whisker Away" so Haru doesn't have a complex backstory pushing her towards the cat world. "A Whisker Away" is a weird film for me where it's not a bad film, but not a film I'd revisit. I just felt that I'd seen everything done in this film from its theme, to its plot, done elsewhere and done better. And maybe that is because so much of it felt like "The Cat Returns" for me and I have such love for that film that I couldn't separate the two.

I'll give it a try someday but it was precisely the stalk-y situation and the touchy touchy with this cat that's actually a girl (nothing wrong with an actual cat) that kept me from watching it. And yeah, it's on her mostly since she is the one who knows what's going on. They might have wanted some realism but the implications were a little nope-nope for me.

Gorgeous and cute anime. In a weird way the characters and their choices were very sincere, the strained relationships, the awkwardness and inability to open up, the obsessions and so forth. Also I used to watch anime sessions at my friends university which was called UTS, so your abbreviation reminded me of those days, once a fortnight they'd take over a lecture room and project anime onto the big screen. It was fun.

I watched the movie and just didn‘t „feel it“. I couldn‘t empathize with the characters. It felt rushed and hollow. The first 2/3 were boring and had no golden thread. The last 1/3 completely lost me because it felt way out of place. The „finale“ was just people yelling and cats flying. The movie overall didn‘t touch me. In my opinion the world building and story writing weren‘t good. My boyfriend however teared up and told me I just don‘t get the movie???? So kinda love or hate xD

I can't help but agree with Christopher, I find little wrong in the last arc and very much enjoyed watching it. It was an important part in affirming Miyo's and Kento's resolve, both through the setting and in the actions of the characters. It's one thing to say what you wish to be/ how you want to live your life and another to go out and actively pursue that despite temptations and obstacles in your way.

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha is the first two-thirds of A Whisker Away just written in a different way with better integration of fantasy elements and a better third act. Instead of cats, there are gods and goddesses and the main character is given the power to transform into any person. It's prefaced as a romance shoujo show but the romance is really just the end goal. It focuses more on the internal character discovery type stuff. I haven't actually rewatched the show in 3 years so I should really do that before recommending. But I think it's at least worth a watch just for the third act because it's like "what if the third act needed to happen". Also, don't read the manga.

Gotta agree with UTS about the 1-hour mark... the fantastical rescue from the realm of the cats was well done but it took away from the development of the characters which was meticulously done in the first hour.

Yeah the third act felt too me a bit like spirited away, which didn't really fit in with the first 2 acts. Maybe it would have worked out better if they added random scenes from the tree world in the first two acts. Still enjoyed it, 7/10 I guess.

You know what I hated? Hinode realizing he's in looove with Mio out of nowhere even though she kept sexually harassing him and not respecting his boundaries. Especially when they don't connect while in human form and nothing seems to motivate his concern for her other than guilt and basic human decency. Just really shallow and annoying. Them getting together really ruined it for me, since I honestly think Muge's obsession with Hinode should've been something she grows out of once she stops looking at the world with that depressing nihilistic outlook. The whole reason she falls for him is that he thought the whole world should just end because it sucks, something she agrees on and felt like nobody else got. Like bruh. Doesn't help that the plot gets all over the place towards the end and tries to cram 3 different plot thread together Btw I was introduced to the movie through the Yorushika music video for Hana no Bourei, which made me cry twice, in comparison to the movie, which made me cry a bit and then very mad

So I'm not sure how to feel. It looked kinda iffy to begin with, but I love Mari Okada. Since the only real comparison made here was Penguin Highway, and I thought that film was just OK... beautiful but lacking substance, I'm not sure where I stand on this one. Suppose I might just have to watch it and see.

The first half of the movie was really great. I loved how that conflict of Muge to become a cat forever and never turn human so well. However, after the first half, the movie got meh. It turned into another anime love fantasy story. And the lore of the other world of cats was not explained at all to us viewers or explored much. I wish that the other world conflicted in Muge relationship with her bf Hirode. And we also didn't got much detail why the villain (the mask seller fat cat) did what he did to all those people he sold the masks too. Overall, the movie was pretty decent. Not a bad movie. A good and decent movie.

The buffet take resonates with me. This felt like a movie with a lot of good-almost great components (great premise, quirky animation with some funny parts, so-so romance, etc.) but a final product that was lackluster and below average. The pacing, especially, felt weird to me, and I agree this movie should have been closer to an hour long. If the fantasy part hadn’t come around to break things up, I probably would have switched it off at about the hour mark.

Yeah, I am more on the Jacks side, I didn't mind that fantastic element that much, but 3 part just felt a bit "naive" and so did plot resolutions (also not sure how I fell about fact that stalker yandere behaviour will get you boyfriend...kudos to her dedication I guess), but its not complicated psychological drama aimed at adults, so that's on me.

It seems that people were mostly put down by the last 1/3 of the movie. It does seem pretty weird to me as well while watching it, feels like it's shoved directly in front of us without explaining much of what's happening, the Mask Seller's motives and the whole fantasy lore. I really want to like this movie as well, but the last part, yea gotta agree with Jack on this one.

If you like cats, have a cat, or just simply grow tired of this world and want to renounce your humanity and become a cat this movie is for you 🤣 On a unrelated topic has anyone seen a mask seller? No reason in particular 🤣 But I agree the first hour was great all up until the bright red cat sidewalk showed up... Don't get me wrong I love this movie a lot but I enjoyed the first hour in a some few minutes much more than the last arc 🤔 But yeah amazing movie i definitely recommend people to watch

I actually feel like the not-as-developed romance makes sense in Ano Hana and drew me in more. Since the characters were kids, they didn’t really have (or need to have) fully-developed romances-it’s more feelings of first, juvenile/adolescent love that have been magnified due to nostalgia, pain, and regret. The fact that the kids still haven’t gotten over these past undeveloped (and partially juvenile) feelings is key in illustrating their stunted emotional growth that begins to heal and mend as the band of friends come back together throughout the course of the show.

I have to fully agree with Jack. The first 2/3 of the movie was great, but once they tried to make it more magical the story fell apart for me. It kind of felt like they didn't know how to end it, so they just threw a pretty distraction at us. Still an enjoyable movie, but the last act was really unnecessary.

I dont think it was trying to be ghibli but i think thats our fault or japan's fault for not having a lot of whimsical movies. But there is NO COMPARISON to a ghibli movie. Ghibli movies or miyazaki movies have ....soul. Other movies always lack that. I think this movie was great, some parts were a lil forced in terms of the characters being ..not unrealistic but rather, not grounded to reality entirely. Animation usually suspends reality and this did that. It was a fine movie. But its unfair to compare it to ghibli. Yes Ghibli doesn't copyright whimsical and fantasy 😂 ghibli just does it best and maybe other studios know that they really cant compare as much or cant reach that level so they stay away from it.

Spoiler for the whole Movie ahead!!! The film started like - ok. And it has some stunning visuals in some rainy scenes where i thought i would watch a movie from CoMix Wave Films. But the characters were so poor. The romance was executed quite weak and the ending was a desaster. The Protagonists did have no chance at all to win and they were not able to achieve anything on their own at all. Even the endfight wasn't fought by them and in fact the mask seller had a 100% chance to win. But je decided to argue with cat to full hope mode and therefore to loose. I am very disappointed of this movie.
