If I have to recommend only one Donizetti recording, this comes to mind. Everyone here was both technically and dramatically perfect. Callas, in her last new role on stage, sang like a Goddess, Corelli and Bastianini were both passionate and fully integrated into the drama, and we have the incredible Maestro Votto here! BravIssimi!

Fantastic to hear this with the score - and interesting to see through the "breaks" that half of Act 1 was taken from "Les Martyrs". Somewhat bizarre was the combination of Severo's Naples cabaletta with the Paris choral ending and its absurdly high sopranos (which in "Les Martyrs" are merely heard because Pauline sings the part with them).

This opera is the most beautiful pearl. I never knew about it, and listening to the gorgeous music and the three heavenly voices, I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't concentrate well. So, tomorrow I will listen to this masterpiece again. Thanks Barone.

what an extraordinary opera, I haven't the slightest idea what's going on but with this cast, it's glorious listening to this while I work. I have to admit it was hearing a clip of Michael Fabiano singing an excerpt of Poliuto that drew me in.

Before I pass to the new opera series, I had to listen again to Poliuto, which became my new favorite. The music is beautiful, and the three principal artist are exceptional. Maria Callas, with her extraordinary beautiful and passionate voice, a phenomenal actress, then my Corelli and Bastianini, also with passionate, beautiful voices, I forget the reality. Nobody ever will sing this role as Callas did, and nobody should touch it. And my favorite conductor Votto. I couldn't ask for more. (I also like Piero de Palma, since I still remember him from my youth, when he was a part in almost all operas). I'm very thankful to you dear Barone for making me discover this gem.

Votto is better than Gavazzeni IMHO.

@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 I need a suggestion: One of my favorite composition is Dvorák Cello Concerto in B Minor. Who would be your choice at cello, other than Yo -Yo Ma. Thank you in advance.

@@judithbereczky4114 Yo Yo Ma is DISGUSTING. I hate him very much, not just as a musician, but also as a person. He's definitely the most overrated cellist of all time and he's an Illuminati. Listen to Rostropovich's interpretation of Dvorak's concerto, it's my favorite.

@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Dear Barone you are my man. Totally agree about Yo Yo Ma. I can’t stand him, a leftist. I was thinking about either Rostropovich or Jacqueline du Pre. There isn’t a big selection. How about Pablo Casals? Recordings too old? Thanks.

@@judithbereczky4114 Well, I'm a big fan of Pablo Casals but I much prefer the Russian school of instrument playing. Du Pre is good, not at the same level as Casals, Fournier (his Dvorak with Szell is GREAT) and Rostropovich, but she's one million times better than the ridiculous communist Yo Yo Ma. I hated Bach's cello suites because I listened to Ma's famous recording, but I changed my mind after listening to the legendary Pierre Fournier, now he's my favorite interpreter of Bach. I must admit that I'm not familiar with the cellists because my instruments are the piano and the violin, but I do listen to some cellists of the past, particularly Fournier and Rostropovich. I like the Hungarian cellist Janos Starker too.

This is surely the definitive performance of this stunningly beautiful opera, and as far as I'm concerned, there is no point in its ever being staged/recorded again. The score requires a trio of the finest, most heroic singers equally matched. The triumvirate here is sublime and will stand alone forever.

Poliuto es una opera preciosa, una de las tantas operas que Callas rescató del olvido, con un elenco de lujo, gran puesta en escena, y gran actuación que debería haber sido filmada. Un abrazo!!!

Besides that one aborted high D at 01:26:00, Callas’ high notes sound surprisingly good for this period! Especially her high C earlier in the opera.

Well, too many high As, Bflats and B natural are really wobbly screams… As beautifully felt it’s her rendition, she was quite uncomfortable in too many sections
