This was on the charts just before my ex-wife and I got Married. She never listened to it long enough to get what she's singing about. My gain. Her loss. My God. We were so young then. Now that Im in my late 60's and hear this song it takes me back to a better Time. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for doing this one! Brings back great memories. I was a sophomore in high school in 1974. Before disco music took off. All of us teens had a nice free and easy attitude with songs like this. Seems liked we mixed all kinds of music together back then. Makes me smile😉
Her singing was definitely smoother on the studio recording. This was Maria's biggest hit (and I think her only "hit" record) even though she recorded many, many albums in several music genres.
She's 76 now and was still releasing albums just a few years ago. She's done big band/swing, children's music, gospel, and a lot of blues. She's been part of the Blues Preservation Project to save heritage Delta blues from the turn of the century to WWII era.
This was good but the radio version was even better. I was in elementary school when this came out. Always liked it. Her voice was different so it drew your attention.
Funny that I was just thinking about this song (for the first time in forever)this evening. Something prompted me to sing a little bit of it to my baby daughter, and then I wondered if anyone had done a reaction video. I was delighted to find that you did. I saw Muldaur perform in a small venue in 1973 or 74. It was a fun show. She has some real chops as a blues singer.
Maria Muldaur's voice is unqiue, yet inviting with lsland-like musical vibes. This is a song that paints a musical tapestry with the "Midnight at The Oasis" theme about a romance in the desert. The song has very sassy elements in the lyrics. For example, "Let's slip off to a sand dune, real soon and kick up a little dust,. "You won't need no camel, no no when I take you for a ride," etc. This song brings back great memories of the 1970s! 😊
I disagree, but that’s okay! It’s a great live rendition. I bought the album when it was released so I know it backwards and forwards but this rendition adds color and range to the original.
This live version helps me appreciate her vocal abilities so much more. I was too young to appreciate this when it was on the radio. It was played too much and I got sick of it. Nice to hear it with fresh ears.
The lyrics "I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car Don't go so fast, but I go pretty far" Have Always stuck in my head! Talk about the "Hook" in Lyrics, that one will live Forever LOL!!!
The lyrics in this song are so good. "send your camel to bed." Wonder what that means....I think we know. Remember this from the 70s when I was a lot younger.
Was 10 years old or so when this came out. Loved it then and still do. Although the lyrics made more sense when I got older. Lol. Keep yourself beautiful my dear. Peace.
Aww! I used to love hearing this song on late night radio back in the late 70's and the early 80's. I prefer the recorded version because of its added atmosphere and slower take.
Wow, another song I kicked a heel to when I was a little 17 yr. old slipping into the discotheque to dance the night away. I always loved this song. The inference to the oasis and other details of Middle Eastern culture made me think of (the old even for that time) Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves movies my little romantic self loved as a young child.
Loved that song when I was a kid. Of course being a kid I heard more the desert oasis romantic dreamy part.Today I finally listened to the sexy part "spend a night with me you won't need a harem to satisfy you".
We all Roberta Flack but she did a great duet with Donny Hathaway called Where is the Love.. Don't think there is a video of it but it a beautiful song
Don’t you make me high! Love that thing. I worked in a record shop in the early ’70s and got to hear all this great music when it came out. Maria Muldaur may be a “one-hit wonder,” but she has lots of great records.
The strings really are popping pal 🙂 the music is very cool and her voice is sexy on this song. It was a hot song in the 70's and still sounds good today as well as Pillow Talk by Slyvia.
India, thanks for doing these songs. Naturally they're not all winners but keeping them alive is a good idea. Now, my questions to you. First, how old are you? Next, what are some of the songs that you like. Not necessarily the one's you score but others? Knowing these things will me a better idea of your taste.
Dear India, I remember watching a documentary(?) on PBS(?) back who knows when, about the music scene down in Greenwich Village in the early 60s. It seems that Maria was a regular on the circuit back then.
I'm so glad you chose that song...I love that song. It's unusual and groundbreaking combining jazz and blues and soulful singing.Yes,your right she's acting out being a tease being persuasive and sexy, sassy with her voice. Giving the words and melody a bending and sway.( Hey singing is acting sometimes.)I was lucky I got to see Maria Muldaur in a small club in Buffalo called the Sportsman's Tavern. She was alot of fun to listen to and watch. She later told us that she had a cold that evening but she performed with no vocal problems...A nice woman,a true professional.
LOVE elephants 🐘 😍🥰🐘...Your elephant on your desk is so pretty...Loved elephants Ever since I saw a documentary at a science center exploritorium years ago and another elephant died on a long walk...all the elephants stopped, were confused, tried to wake their friend up, realized and then cried allot really loudly with their trunks in the air looking up to the sky and also said goodbye with another sound looking at their friend...Elephants are sooooo loving. 😍🥺😍😊☺️😎🤩... P.S...Didn't mean to make anyone cry, my bad! 😐😋😐
Another big big one hit wonder song. Dont miss her or the song. Oh well. Cant like them all. Hey India, can you take a react to jennifer warnes song RIGHT TIME OF THE NIGHT. or maybe BARRY MANILOW the song EVEN NOW. Thanks kiddo. You the best. On n on to 100k baby
Back in 1973 this was close to aural porn...but the radio stations got to play it and it kind of opened the musical world after that, especially with an aggressive female lead to the song.
I should look it up before I speak, but I think she may have recorded "Don't You Feel My Leg" . I'm sure someone on here will remember and correct me if I have the wrong singer. It's a fun one!
