Answering your question about Mariah’s sexiness… Yes, the Butterfly album was released after her divorce with Tommy Motolla and the concept of the album is her freedom and control of her own life, career and creative process! This is the “real Mariah”… Sexy but cute haha
This video was very much a parody of James Bond movies, hence the silly skit with the overacting. The Honey MV was def the first glimpse of Mariah as a sex symbol, which was a deliberate choice by MC after having no control over her image in the earlier years. It was indeed shot in Puerto Rico, btw. Fun fact: this song was a #1 debut on the Hot 100 (Mariah was the first woman to do so)!
I thought she did that with Fantasy... I thought it was Michael Jackson with You Are Not Alone and then almost immediately Mariah with Fantasy. But then Honey ALSO debuted at no. 1, so she'd be the very first person ever to had two songs debuting at no. 1
This video is really based on her escaping tommy (the short white guy man) because he kept her locked in the mansion (which she called sing sing, like the jail) because he didn’t want her to do r&b and hip hop or not acknowledge her black side he wanted her to stay pop!!!
@@deed2157 lol no it was not. Her first and sec album was pop and the third album Daydream she was entering into more r&b. For the fantasy remix Mariah wanted ODB but Tommy (her ex husband & chairman of Sony) didn’t want her to go r&b and hip hop or collaborate with rappers! But she did anyway so he sabotaged her at the Grammys when she was nominated for 6 awards and didn’t win none especially when the album sold 20milllion. Baby I’m a fan of Mariah and remember all this in Real time! And you should also read her book! You would know and not responding to what you think you know! 😘🫶🏽
@@Beautiful_kish I'm not talking about whether Matola wanted a rapper in Mariah's song😂 or hip hop. I already know about the issue of ODB being in Mariah's song. You being a fan doesn't change the fact her initial albums had new jack swing, gospel and even 70s r&b in it. I'm not disputing some songs could be considered a bit pop but a straight pop album? No way 😂
This was the first single and it launched her new sexy look. Before she was the girl next door in jean shorts an flannels and this really shocked the world. It was literally all people were talking about for weeks.
The video is a metaphor for Mariah escaping her ex-husband's control (Tommy Motolla) and going to an exotic location to meet her love interest (Derek Jeter). It's based on the time she escaped the mansion she lived in with Tommy, where he kept her locked and guarded with security. She did that to meet Derek in Puerto Rico (which is where the music video was shot). The James Bond theme added a layer of fun and humor since she wasn't allowed to have fun at work until that point. It also makes sense that the James Bond theme stemmed from the fact that her escape to meet Derek was actually pretty much a secret operation. Tommy would really send people in suits with guns after her if she was to escape the mansion, and yes that actually happened too once... The music video also showcased her real personality instead of the image that was marketed by the record label, as well as her "sexy side". Edit: another thing to note is that her hairstyle and dress in the first scene are the same styles she would have while under her husband's control since he controlled that too. A little black dress and the same hairstyle she's been rocking basically ever since they got married. When she escapes in the music video and changes clothes and we start seeing her with different hairstyles, she gives us a glimpse into her appearance going forward now that she has control over her image. That was pretty cool to me because you'd expect her to start the music video with her new image, but she made it a point to start with her older image and show us the transition. She had to be very symbolic about everything. She did not admit that the video was based on her life back then. Her ex-husband was still the CEO of her record label and she couldn't go against him publically because it would hinder her career.
Butterfly is her creative breakthrough. She no longer had to conform to everything managers and labels demanded of her and got more creative freedom. It's almost like a new debut for fully realized potential of Mariah the way she wanted to portray herself and the type of music she wants to make, which is more R&B focused than it is pure pop like everything prior to the Butterfly album.
The Butterfly era is so iconic. Honey was a 3 weeks #1 single. Butterfly peaked at #16 on airplay, but wasn't commercially released, so ineligible to chart in the US. Breakdown peaked somewhere in the top 50 on airplay, but also didn't get a single and couldn't chart. The My All was the 2nd single and also reached #1. Both #1's are now multi-platinum in the US, Breakdown was eventually also certified for digital sales. The album itself debuted at #1 and was eventually certified 5x platinum in the US. What an era. She sounded phenomenal. She looked incredible. And the music was sublime.
I always crack up when people criticize Mariah for being a "bad dancer" or "very little choreography." Has anyone noticed Mariah is performing and dancing in 5 or 6 inch stiletto heels! The fact she can stand, walk, or even run across a marble floor is incredible.
There're lots of James Bond elements in that video. The most iconic one is the replica of the bikini used originally by Ursula Andress as the bond-girl Honey Ryder.
I think the intro is basically a parody of Bond movies and action movies. It was badly acted on purpose. And exactly like Joe said it was the debut of Sexriah because she was emancipated from Tommy Mattola finally who was controlling her in their marriage and controlling her career and anti Mariah singing RnB and Hip Hop and claiming her black side.
0:47 2:30 Seeing Mariah in those Gucci stilettos marked the beginning of a lifelong journey appreciating her artistry. 0:27 No, Butterfly has seven music videos. Honey & My All each have an additional music video for the Hip Hop remixes. Music companies were rolling in cash during the late 90s when album sales were at their peak, so everyone had money to spare when it came to investing in music videos as a marketing tool for promoting singles. 14:28 Lol, then you're gonna hate Heartbreaker. It cost $2.5M & went to #1.
This is a Mariah carey directed video. She doesn’t take it seriously. She’s just letting her hair down and having fun. So I wouldn’t get to critical about it. It’s not that deep
The organization is even named "D.U.N.C.E." like they're supposed to be corny, bad villains. Cackling at these two thinking it's serious and not a fun video.
Ik you guys wontdo them for this week but I hope you guys do another Mariah Carey week bc she has some good ones. Bringin on the Heartbreak, I still Believe, #Beautiful, GTFO, With you. And i notice that you guys react to mostly music videos but her emancipation of mimi album has so many good songs.
Her entire discography is amazing. Hard to separate it as “good ones” because then that makes it seem as though she has bad ones and in the case of Mariah, she’s one of the few artists with a beautifully composed and crafted discography. Everything is amazing.
Never say never? The bond film? As for the back story of the butterfly album. Prior to this Mariah had been in a relationship with the head of sony pretty much since her debuted. Who happend to be 20 years her senior. So that father figure control came into the marriage. He wanted Mariah to be taken seriously as a recording artists as opposed to to the next big pop star. So wanted her image to be very girl next door, keep the hair curly and where a black dress and a shirt with short shorts in a field and as you said sing shoo doo doos. To a certain extent Mariah agreed that having that sort of image would help people to see that she’s not just a pop star that want’s to be seen by the masses but a singer/songwriting recording artists. Also there was the issue of her being half black and being a fan of black music culture. Which he wanted to hide. As a result of years of fighting to get control of her image and music (and mind you she had written everysong up the daydream album her previous album) and her life as a whole she left Tommy Motola her husband. During the divorce and after. She began work on this album. Kind of being somewhat detached from Tommy well definitely peronally but not wuite professionally, she was alble to take control of her sound and image which what you’re seeing and hearing here.Btw this is Mariah introducing herself as a personas oppose to trying the hip hop thing. This is what she grew up on. One more thing all the songs you’ve reacted to are true stories from a year leading up to the release of the album.
Mariah is a goofy person. Her being so talented in vocals, being a producer & a songwriter, also a director. ( Fantasy music video, maybe some other stuff too) A lot of people got so lost in her Diva persona. Girls’ just wanna have fun! ( pun intended!) The music video being cringey to you guys, you both overlooked the insane vocals on this track. We need some fun in the artists and their expression. Do we need to see & hear Billie’s & Adele’s depressing songs all the time?? She preceded both and she showed personality in this video. And she blows both vocally too!! PS: I love Adele and Billie, but both artists come to mind when thinking about releasing depressing songs all the time. I love Pink!! 😂❤
Hey guys, so I was hoping y'all would do a week 2 for MJB. These videos listed are a bit more storytelling/cinematic. I think you two would enjoy. 1. All That I Can Say 2. Deep Inside 3. @ricardodeases2931 nobody knew who she was as a backing singer, so why are you using that as an example ? 😂 When she introduced herself as a solo artist she was nothing like she is in the Honey video. Ans she was also nothing like she was when she was a backing singer. Bye Felicia
Fun fact: Theres a speculation that this song is about man juices. "And its just t like Honey when your love comes over me. Oh baby I've got a dependency so I strong out for another taste of Honey. Its like honey when it washes over me You know sugar never ever was so sweet And I'm dying for ya Crying for ya I adore ya One hit of your love addicted me (I need you babe) And I'm strung out on you, darling (ooh, your love addicted me) Don't you see (I can't wait) Every night and day I can hardly wait (for another) For another taste of honey (Baby, I can hardly wait)"
Well boys , welcome to 90s natural beauty , with no heavy make up and just simplicity and beginning is like a parody reminds me like bad boys funny moments when they trying to get away in being captive
hey everyone this was my week lol answering a few questions... 1) yes these are all from one album butterfly. calling me a liar 😁 2) sorry for the cheesy intro. was going to do the remix video but it features P. Diddy... 3) its true she does not dance a lot. this and heartbreaker are the most she really dances. 4) breakdown is coming dont worry everyone!
You are correct! This was the period where Mariah was shedding her good girl image and getting more comfortable being overtly sexy. Perhaps not coincidentally, it was also at this time that she got involved with Derek Jeter (GO YANKEES) and dumped her husband Tommy Mottola, the music exec who discovered her.
i wish there were no more SFX after the music started, but i think they thought they were being cinematic and forward-thinking. the beginning being cheesy and over the top is correct though. you can't take that away from me.
The remix is better FOR ME. I this album is fire...actually all of her albums are fire, special Glitter album. Edit: She walked so that Ariana could eat
Mariah can't dance, she cant even move these days lol. But she is a star. This video in particular, she divorced Tommy Motolla, CEO of SOny, ex husband..... "look how hot Im, Tommy"
