Her voice is so extraordianry that she has been greatly overlooked as a songwriter. More than her range and her whistle register, it's the uniqueness of her songwriting voice that made her so successful. There are other singers with extraordinary voices, but they aren't as listenable to me as Mariah's song catalog is because of Mariah's worldplay and catchy melodies.

I was 10 when this song was new, luckily just too young or I woulda fallen so hard in love with Mariah I still wouldn't be over it. I don't mind the high notes and the embellishments but just her voice singing pure notes in the mid-range is enough. Also this song has been an absolute gift for talent show contestants for decades :D I also don't mind the text over the video, it makes it easier to focus on your reaction and not be distracted by watching her performance, so really not a problem for me if/when you need to do that.

The story behind this song? She was writing a song for a movie titled by the same name for Gloria Estefan to sing…Mottola walked in and heard the song and told her that this was NOT a song for a movie and had her keep the record and put it on Music Box. The rest is history. But Gloria Estefan?? Can you imagine??

Maybe not THIS song but Gloria Estefan was THAT chick in the 80s and 90s for pop ballads. She had a ton of good, catchy love songs.

Yes, this is live and this was the era in which her live vocals actually outshined her studio versions. She would add things (ad libs and runs) to the song that she wouldn't do on the recording that made the song even more special when she sang it live.

I think the live version became the official single and is what they played on radio too? I know for sure this was the video in circulation on MTV. I guess there might be a standard studio version on the album? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@bryanstarke2931 They played the studio version on the radio, but the live version became the official video and that's what you'd see played in heavy rotation on MTV and VH1. You can always tell the live version as it contains the applause from the audience (which is missing from the radio edit, which is the studio version).

Mariah is best known for a very unique and rare vocal ability I don’t think you’ve touched on yet. Listen to Emotions and you’ll understand 🤗 Other notables in her catalog: Dreamlover (a personal fave), If It’s Over (Grammy performance), Honey, Make It Happen, Anytime You Need A Friend (this is a great showcase of “Mimi” leading a choir as is If It’s Over), Love Takes Time, I Don’t Wanna Cry, Butterfly, All I Want For Christmas Is You (which has become a Christmas time staple), and her rendition of the Jackson 5s “I’ll Be There” on her MTVs Unplugged performance…. classic career defining Mariah. Her projection and expression has always been so incredible. That vocal ability and range. The album this song is on, Music Box, was the first CD I ever owned. I wore it out. And at the time, I didn't care for this song as much, because it was so overplayed. But you know what? I hear it now, and it's so stunning and her performance is so effortless. Goosebumps! I enjoy it more now than I ever did before.

Yes it live. Back when you had to able to actually sing and hold a tune to make it. No gimmickie marketing, no pushing an " artist " on their looks ( even though Mariah is very good looking ) just their talent. A lost art. ( Adele apart )

The singing in this is 100% not the singing in the video. I don't know if it's been mashed together or she lip synced but the audio is not her in the video singing. Check 1:42 for proof. She pulls away from the mic yet the singing audio stays exactly the same. It's either the studio with the music stripped (& live put over) or her live from something else but it sounds studio recorded to me. There is just no atmosphere that you would get from a mic on stage present in the sound.

@Creed Bratton this is 100% live but it has been dubbed for a better quality...when she pull away her mic,that mean she is doing some high note that she think it sounded a little bit too loud or she's not to sure how the sound will be like...till now,she still pull away her mic if she hitting a high note or sustaining a certain note....

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever in my mind. It's just so inspiring, well delivered and brilliant. If I started recommending Mariah's songs, it's going to take quite a while, since I am a huge fan. But, I'd recommend 'Emotions', 'Endless Love' (a legendary duet with Luther Vandross) and 'Dreamlover'. Of course, there are many more. But we'll get there soon!

Man, this song takes me right back to 4th grade, singing with my friends in our bedrooms! This just goes to show how amazing of a singer she is! That's why she's one of the best of all time! I could suggest so many songs by her, but one of my favorites is Melt away, or maybe Emotions 😁

Yeah, Mariah herself apparently didn't like this song much but it was a big hit and it's still one of my favorites from her. The message is great and she could SANG. Honestly, it's the main song that proves she really didn't need the insanely high whistle notes (which did a lot of damage to her vocal chords) despite how impressive those are. 😁

Mariah has such a wonderful voice and is so talented as well, when I hear her sing I forget everything else and just listen to her. wrong - this is live - not interested in a debate - just don't want false information being spread around - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wuOdJ_1pLoY.html - another video of the same performance w/o the major camera edit on that last note vs the "official" video. And yes, a live band is playing behind her and those are actual people that paid to hear her sing live, she was that legit, end of story.
