This is my reaction, analysis and breakdown of Mariah Carey singing “Hero,” live at Madison Square Garden in 1994. This beautiful performance of her hit song from her 1993 album “Music Box,” is a great example of Mariah’s incredible skill. She really utilizes her forward, nasal resonating mix and has full control over her break, transitioning in and out of registers with ease and fluidity. Mariah’s runs are effortless and incredibly quick and clean. Her tone is much brighter here than it has been in the past which I attribute to a higher larynx and a mixy-er placement. This song is also a quintessential Mariah ballad that every fan should know! (and one of my karaoke go-tos). We can take a lot away from the control she has of her tone and the wide variety of timbres she gives us in every phrase. May we all strive to have Mariah’s level of control!
I am a Jazz/R&B vocalist, saxophone player and music educator. Mariah Carey is a huge influence of mine along with Ariana Grande, Whitney Houston, and several other giants in pop music as well as R&B and Jazz. It is such a joy to analyze these performances for y’all and I hope you enjoy!
