"I miss that dark rich tone she had on her 1st album"- umm, YES! Ugh, me too. It was SO good. It's interesting u also noticed her tone brightened as she went further in her career, as did I. At times it can sound like she's becoming a caricature of herself (and don't get me wrong, Mariah is a true genius to me.) Part of me strongly thinks this was a conscious decision, on either her part or the label execs, to drive a clear distinction between her and Whitney, to whom she says labels told her she sounded so much like, they wouldn't sign her. Also, they were constantly compared, and when she sand w more of a vocal growl & huskier- like her 1st 2 albums, mainly- she really could, on certain notes, sung certain ways, sound just like Whitney Houston (which, if that's you're biggest problem, it's kinda hard to feel bad for u lol)

I love how you analyze bit by bit of the performance, you explain the different tones, you point out the vocal nuances and you're a great singer yourself! This is the content I was looking for! It's different from the rest of those boring "reaction videos" from youtubers who are not musically trained and who just play the song, give a comment and that's basically it. Your videos on the other hand are something else, like I said, very instructive. Those runs Mariah executed were so virtuoso and iconic for R&B-music. She's a genius for the fact that she could do all that skillful singing despite not being able to read score sheets! That being said, have you ever heard of Angelina Jordan? She's another genius of our time, a very young one at that, she's still a child. If you're a jazz singer, I'm sure you've heard of her. She covered some old jazz standards and she's one of the big hopes to bring jazz, soul and R&B vibes back to the charts again in the future! You might be intrigued to give her a shot.
