Edit for headphones. More bass, wider sound.
"The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" is a song by American poet and songwriter Shel Silverstein. Taken from Marianne Faithfull's 1979 album "Broken English", this song was released as a single in November 1979. It reached #2 in Austria, #4 in South Africa, #5 in Switzerland and Germany, #7 in Belgium, #17 in France, #18 in Australia, #20 in New Zealand and #48 in the UK.
The performance is of a French tv show (the Collaro show).
This song must have been very difficult for her to mime: no microphone to hide her lips, long intimate close ups and two hundred sixty three words to sing...
I made synchronisation better (no more glitches by Marianne), I made a better intro (cut out the French crap) and I ended the video better: a slow fade out with Marianne's languorous glances...
The video is a bit strange for at first Marianne was not allowed to perform in France (stupid French civil servants with their laws), but after the tv guys finally obtained a work permit for her, she was allowed to perform (the work permit is in her hands in the video). This had lead to this idea of a setting of a middle east working slave situation. You know, that same middle east situation that is still going on in countries like Qatar, with their backward islamic laws, allowing people to kill, enslave and so on... In Saudi Arabia they still use a sword to decapitate death row inmates...
THE BALLAD OF LUCY JORDAN *
(Shel Silverstein)
The morning sun touched lightly on
the eyes of Lucy Jordan
In a white suburban bedroom
in a white suburban town
And she lay there neath the covers
dreaming of a thousand lovers
til the world turned to orange
and the room went spinning round
At the age of 37
she realized she'd never ride
through Paris in a sports car
with the warm wind in her hair
So she let the phone keep ringing
as she sat there softly singing
little nursery rhymes she'd memorized
in her Daddy's easy chair
Her husband he's off to work
and the kids are off to school
and there were oh so many ways
for her to spend the day
She could clean the house for hours
or rearrange the flowers
or run naked through the shady street
screaming all the way
At the age of 37
she realized she'd never ride
through Paris in a sports car
with the warm wind in her hair
So she let the phone keep ringing
as she sat there softly singing
pretty nursery rhymes she'd memorized
in her Daddy's easy chair
The evening sun touched gently on
the eyes of Lucy Jordan
on the rooftop where she climbed
when all the laughter grew too loud
And she bowed and curtsied to the man
who reached and offered her his hand
and he led her down to the long white car
that waited past the crowd
At the age of 37
she knew she'd found forever
as she rode along through Paris
with the warm wind in her hair

summary of this song by Sharon:
It is about a 30ish year old woman who realizes that she has reached that point in her life where her dreams will never come true. She has a very boring life that is driving her crazy. The main theme is that she finally becomes detached from reality. She goes out on the roof, where many people see her, and the psychiatric attendants come to take her to a mental institution. In other words, complete nervous breakdown and the death of her cherished dream. It is as the Rolling Stones sang: "Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind."

So I watching the movie and this incredible song drops and I was so blowin away. Long story short I can't stop listening to this gem of a song. WOW!! . I'm so stoked!!

Why is the scenery looking like morroco... when the song is about a suburban housewife depressed about her life at 37 and never getting to drive through paris in a red sports car with the wind blowing through her hair 😢 released in 74 I was 18 and I though Lucy Jordan was so old at 37 😂😢😮now I know how young it is😢

Thank you for this song. Gee, I had to reach back to when I first heard this song which explains the clip. The song was written by lyricist Shel Silverstein. It was used in a film called "Montenegro" released in 1981 and directed by Dusan Makavejev. The lovely Marianne Faithful sang "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" which accompanied the opening credits. The song was used again in "Thelma and Louise. " I was fortunate to attend a Marianne Faithful concert many years ago. 🎶💐

@@paulhenry5060 Thank you. Academic research technique applied in this instance. Indeed "Montenegro" reflected the Swedish approach to the arts and their influence in the industry. The clip is another story and worth study of that style of production still prevalent in the music industry especially where it contrasts with the artist's values and personal style. As a dancer, actor, director and of recent years writer, I find the product/audience relationship perspectives always fascinating. 💃🎶

Why was she clinging onto that flimsy bit of scenery in such an awkward manner. It looks rather uncomfortable. Was she a tad the worse for wear? I love her singing. Sadly I never got to see her perform live. I’m far from having heard all her albums, but every song I have heard was very well performed with her gorgeous voice.
@ruudtesrockandrollingsixties
@ruudtesrockandrollingsixties 5 месяцев назад
an explanation is in the video's description, Richard her voice, especially in the beginning of her performings, was very soft and tender, but I think it doesn't necessarily take a great volume voice to reach the charts (=touch our hearts)... it takes soul

Yes. But there are many ways to assess Marianne Faithfull; one as the girlfriend and ultimate 1960s 'rock-chick' and drug-addled girlfriend of Mick Jagger (not of Keith Richard - that was Anita Pallenburg); and ultimately a typical 'victim' of this lifestyle and the infamous Rolling Stones' 'drug bust' of 1967. Probably most will remember her as the leather-clad girl of the 1969 film 'Girl On A Motorcycle' - with or without the 'Mars Bar' for company !!

@@trevormcgaughran9351 Actually, I agree with you. The whole point about the Redlands 'bust' was almost certainly to discredit the Rolling Stones - and she became a victim as a result. There's probably nothing new about the Police here - or elsewhere - concocting evidence in order to discredit certain individuals.

it is a reaction to the French authorities who refused Marianne to perform on tv for she didn't have a working permit. In the end the tv people manage to fix that, hence the working permit in her hands and the sort of slavery setup. Civil servants, especially the tax collectors: a serious menace to the free world...

I know that song sung by Marianne quite well, but what the heck is this video coming from and why? The whole scenario is completely ridiculous. Is she supposed to be a "white slave to arabs"? Does anybody knows the origin of this? ("Melody varietes" displayed on the upper right corner of the video)
@ruudtesrockandrollingsixties
@ruudtesrockandrollingsixties 7 месяцев назад
Marianne did not have a permit to perform in France, the makers had to do quite a lot to get her a work permit. That's what she's holding in her hands. I think it was some kind of mockery of the French government. Retarded civil servants: the only thing they master perfectly is collecting taxes...
