Marie De Guise - Mother of Mary Stuart, Queen Of Scots: Marie De Guise was born on 22 November 1515 at Bar-le-Duc, Lorraine and died on 11 June 1560 at Edinburgh. She was Queen of Scots from 1538 until 1542 by her marriage to James V, and regent for her absent daughter Mary, queen of Scots from 1554 until 1560.
Thanks to the French troops that supported the Scottish government against internal and external enemies, she had de facto power over Scotland from 1547 onwards, although she was not formally given the post of regent until 1554. She was one of the main players in the Franco-Scottish alliance against England and the Scottish Protestants, and sought to preserve Scotland as a Catholic country for her absent daughter, a goal she failed to achieve, as she died in the midst of the conflict against the Scottish Protestants supported by England, allowing the Scottish Reformation to be implemented a year before her daughter's return.

I feel sorry for her and her daughter, Queen Mary. Both were strong independent women who faught for their rights all life. Marie De Guise gave her entire life to protect the throne for her daughter. She didn't marry after death of her second husband. Mary had a hard luck in love and marriages. Her true love Francis died so young and next Darnley was so unfaithful and greedy. Third, Bothwell died rotting in prison.

I love Marie de Guise, she was an intelligent, formidable woman in a male-dominated world at the time. She was very educated and courageous, and her daughter Mary, Queen of Scots inherited her courage. She made the most of her circumstances as Queen Regent and fought the English as much as possible, while trying to balance Scotland's alliance with the French. It was not easy, and in the end she couldn't stop fate from changing circumstances, but she held up very well considering the odds against her. It's a shame that Marie de Guise was made to feel like a stranger in her own country of birth when she briefly reunited with her daughter, she had to beg for financial help. I thought that Henri II treated her bad.

Marie of Guise is one of the few regent women who ruled on behalf of a child female reigning queen in Europe. That small list includes Blanche of Artois, mother and regent of Queen Jeanne I of Navarre, Sancha step grandmother and Regent for Queen Giovanna I of Naples. Elizabeth of Bosnia, mother and regent for Queens Mary of Hungary and Jadwiga of Poland, Margaret of France, regent and mother of Queen Catherine of Navarre, and Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies, regent and mother of Queen Isabella II of Spain.

Very interesting and informative. I had never seen some of the portraits of Mary De Guise featured in this video. It was good of Mary to allow religious freedom. It is difficult to understand why different religious groups could not practice religious tolerance, but instead sought to oppress each other. That seems the opposite of what Christianity should have been about.

I think you've misunderstood slightly. Marie de Guise was NOT planning to make Scotland and England French territories, that was the aspiration of Henry II of France and it was used as propaganda against Marie due to her reliance on French troops against English armies and latterly Protestant Scots too to try and maintain order. She even stated Scotland would be best served with the removal of both French and English troops. She was no more a plotter or schemer than any of her contemporaries including Elizabeth I.

@@margaret-annf4119 oh please! she was the one who agreed with the marriage contract which would make Scotland part of France in a case if Mary dies childless! it doesn't matter Henri forced her to or any other excuse! Scottish nobles had every right to turn against such woman after her betrayal! now you might say it's protestant propaganda! would Francis II be forced to annul a contract if it didn't existed and it didn't face a backlash by Scots? that sounds propaganda to you? it's not clear what Mary thought of it, maybe she agreed with it, maybe she was decieved or manipulated into accepting it, or was forced to, at the end of the day, it was her mother who allowed all of this to happen and made Scotland untrusting of her which we all know how that ended up

I am much pleased to see this story as it much enriches my knowledge of French/Tudor/Stewart dynamics. However, upon visiting your channel (while I fully acknowledge its raison d'etre), I was disappointed to find that it covers only Bourbon (please forgive the shorthand) dynasty. I would much love to learn (as my understanding such as it is, is Anglo-Norman centric) more of earlier French Kings. Some of the Merovingians, Mayors of the Palace, Carolingians (and this is mysterious to me) the transition to the Capetians in the 10th century. Anyway, no disrespect to you or to your content (which I have found interesting), but if you title your channel "The Kings of France", it seems it should have a broader focus. Also, a discourse about 'Salian Law' as regards Henry V of England's claim would be interesting. Edited for typo.

Mary of Guelders - while with her own challenges to face - actually fared reasonably well. Also please look up the story of Black Agnes of Dunbar she is a wonderful Scottish woman to read about!

Marie promises religious freedom, well, how did that work out with Mary Queen of England? These religious ideas are just nonsense, and I learned a long time ago how they started.

@@TheKingsofFrance I am an atheist, but don’t boo anyone who is religious or expresses their religious views. The latter is as long as their beliefs are not forced on others including me. I tried to see the balance between religions, but all they’ve done was to murder anyone who wasn’t on their side. I realize it was politics (and in previous centuries so cannot be evaluated as modern) but it was nonsensical.
