dovie2blue That might be the reason she is better to us. She understands English better because it is her first language and can take the gist of what Marie is saying and give it to us with more of our lingo and inflections.

You are quite right. I used to be a professional interpreter. The rule is, you should always translate INTO your mother tongue, not out of it.

I used her technique to organize my drawers. And let me tell you: This has brought me so much joy and contentment. I love to just open my drawers and looking at all of my things staring back at me...every one of them.

I got ASMR from listening to Marie speak, but the advice she gives will help me I think in tackling some daunting chores, and hopefully by setting a 'finish' date will help alleviate stress concerning upcoming spring cleaning projects.

In japanese tradition, when domestic objects turn 100 years they can become sort of evil ghosts, the "tsukumogami". One can imagine that neglected, "sleeping" objects become tsukumogami that will haunt our houses and our lives! Therefore we must let them go and say a proper farewell!

+Sarah Norment Thats what brought me to this video. The google translator was so bad, I started looking for alternatives. The editing on this video is a little annoying when it does quick close up shots on the translator for small bits, but thats a post-production issue.

I've just finished the book, and look forward to moving from the visualisation stage to the actual picking out the bits which spark joy in me. I think the majority of pets owners would know which toys they dog or cat love and can't do without. I know which ones my dog plays with most etc.

wow i agree like when i clean its more about what i want to keep because if i want something it means i like it and makes me happy...and iagree that columns are bad not just that it squishes the things that are in the bottom but when i také some of the bottom things out it always messes the whole pile .. and look at her she just radiates happiness and calmness and peacefulness and look how she moves her hands slowly and elegantly ...really inspiring method that has inspiring creator

The interpreter is former Tokyo resident and passing acquaintance Lisle Wilkerson. She does an amazing job here! Miles beyond the woman who interpreted for Konmari at Google. That said, she does approach this gig with a noticeably casual demeanor, and her paraphrasing does get a little loose in places, which MIGHT be why Konmari seems to take an interest in the question cards. お疲れ様、リーソル！

I absolutely love it! Though unfortunately the translation didn't do justice. What Marie Kondo is says in her words are a lot more thoughtful and meaningful. Some of her important points were lost in translation. That said, I know it's not easy to be an interpreter.

This video really inspires me. I already read the book and started tidying, but the way she speaks and how she talks about it, really gives it an extra dimension. Even though I don't know a word of the Japanese language, I really feel her good vibes. I also got the feeling that the translator is really in sinc with her message.

@dovie2blue Yes, better than the one at the Google talk. By larger I meant personality is larger. And all the hand waving makes her bigger. She takes too much attention for herself when the spotlight is supposed to be on Ms. Kondo. She is an EXCELLENT public speaker, but not so much a good translator. Either way, I enjoyed this talk. :)

Momma Homemaker No, she deals only with physical organization, but she says that once you get your stuff organized and make all of the necessary decisions, the rest of your life will be more organized as well, naturally. I believe it's possible.

Looks like that the translator doesnot understand what Marie Condo talking about. Is there anybody here whose native language is Japan - can you tell how she is translating? I noticed 1 mistake, and it is a big point ( as I can notice from a few videos where Marie explained herself and with Japanese interpreter. Any comments about her translation from native Japanese people ?

+2008nueva It's not OK, but she has no experience with true hoarders, at least not the ones who are really mentally ill. Her method would not be effective for these people as they would find it impossible to get rid of so much of their hoard, and even if they did, they would find a way to replace it as soon as possible. Her method is for people who have cluttered up their lives but who can let go of possessions with rational reasons and techniques. NOT for hoarders.

dovie2blue she doesn't claim to have the cure to hoarding. She targets the average consumer and shows them that their things they keep for no reason can hold them back and make them unhappy without them even realizing.

The interviewer was so irritating with her bargaining against the method and trying to be alpha. Marie Kondo must get so sick of that type of person. Other than that, great presentation.

she's a bit of "cat lady"-like in the head, but definitely in her own niche. read her book - the practical advice is superb, the spiritual "talk to your toothbrush" stuff is too much. 5/7 would apply her methods to clean my garage again.

The translator is good but she is sometimes paraphrasing what Marie Kondo is saying rather than translating directly. (I speak Japanese.) She talks ABOUT her instead of just stating her message. Instead of saying, "I'm going to....." the translator says, "She is going to....." as if she is a guest herself. Not professional for a translator. I also find she speaks with her hands too much. She has a big personality. It almost feels like the translator is the guest rather than Marie Kondo, which is a shame.

***** Absolutely agree. The fact that everyone is talking about the translator and not Marie shows how distracting her paraphrasing and body language is. She's also very slow, which interrupts the pace of the presentation. It can be entertaining at times, but not professional for a translator. It's not about the translator, it's about Marie!

***** the thing is , she is doing a long talk which is supposed to be engaging and it makes sense that both have a big personality. The situation is different , if Marie was talking and being animated and the translator wasn't I would get bored with this talk real quick.

+tinakoyama i agree with what you are saying. It appears that the translator is not just translating. She takes the position of someone who Konmari talks to and she relates to the audience what she was told. That is not how i understand being a translator is. Konmari is the guest speaker and not her. Translators are usually just in the background, and not taking the position of addressing the audience directly, as what the lady translator is doing in this video.
