@@nightmarishcompositions4536 Holywood was his opus imo. Perfect blend of everything he had done up to that point and he was never better lyrically, before or since.
In my opinion Holy Wood, Mechanical Animals and AS were incomparable, but the cynicism of Portrait is incredible and later albums have their worth, for sure. Born Villian, High End of Low and EM/DM are rich!
The Golden Age of Grotesque is a lot of fun, and groovy. Antichrist Superstar is too dark and depressing for me to listen to now as an adult. Takes me right back to my turbulent teenage years.
It’s a masterpiece, and my favourite album of all time. The tour was equally as heavy and chaotic. After working on the album, Sean Beavan also did live sound for the tour! So it sounded on point live too. There’s some really high quality bootlegs on RU-vid, they take me back to that crazy time. Thanks for the video.
Marilyn Manson was hands down one of the greatest and most important artists of the 20th century. I wouldn't classify myself as a huge fan, but I respect him because he wasn't just about shock. He was about reflection. Reflecting all the hypocritical, repressed shadow aspects of the collective consciousness of western society back to itself... Everything that had been swept under the rug and denied and disowned for ages. And he did an absolutely amazing fucking job of it. He knew exactly what he was trying to achieve and was unapologetic in his methods. A true artist in the truest sense of the word.
One of the greatest rock albums of all time in my opinion. This album transformed my life as a teen and opened up my eyes to how powerful music can be on society. Love it or hate it, this album is a masterpiece and helped define a generation.
If it wasn't for MM 90% of you wouldn't even know the genre. I wont defend his character but the whole "poser" thing is worn out.. there was no one near the genre that influenced more people than this band.@@ToddMcKean31
Great analysis mate. 'Angel with the Scabbed Wings' was one of my gateways into extreme music. I'm still chasing that first rush I felt when someone popped the headphones on my head and hit play. The sound design is just perfect.
I always felt like this album, The Downward Spiral and The Great Southern Trendkill were all like cousins as they share a lot of the same DNA as far as production team.
The production bait and switch in 1996 is really one of the most clever I've ever heard. It's not even just that the instruments are panned in an odd way, they all feel (vocals included) as if they've been recorded in someone's basement on a cheap 4 track tape recorder. It's all super lo-fi. However, when that chorus hits, everything becomes super crisp and clean and powerful. One of my favorite moments from the record that doesn't get enough credit.
Antichrist Superstar is the best and most perfect album in every direction, every layer and every output ever made. It is perfect in every single aspect. 100%.
Oh my God I fucking LOVE this album!!! I used to play it on repeat and let it crawl into my brain and live there...permanently. Every time I hear any song on this album it stirs up a certain feeling that is both intense but unexplainable and the only things existing in the world in that point and time are me and the music. Its easy to immerse yourself in this album and let it take you away. P.S. I love your break down of this album. It's spot on and I feel you did it justice! Thank you! 🤘🖤🤘🖤🤘
1997. My first concert. I was 13 and got a ticket for my bday. However, I was 3 hours away from the venue, and my gramps wasn't taking me, so I found my own way up on the Tri-Rail from Miami to W. Palm Beach and had the best night of my young life. Slept on the beach with a group of older teens I met. I'm pretty sure that concert shaped the entire trajectory of self-reliance and pushing through fear..cause trust me, I was scared! Alone, just one goal... Go see Manson!
I thought the algorithm was showing me an experienced music RU-vidr from whom I was about to find tons of videos I'd like. And then I went to your channel and it's your first video. The first one is a perfect, exceptionally accurate summation of everything I appreciate about an album I love. You knocked it out of the park dude, fantastic discussion of Antichrist Superstar.
In '96, upon its release and after my very first listen, I declared Antichrist Superstar to be a perfect album. The entire product is absolutely brilliant. After many years of not listening to the album, I played it again a few months back. I stand by my initial statement: It is goddamn perfect.
I was 16 when this came out. And used my allowance to buy it, first day of release, Tuesday October 8th, at Camelot Music in the mall. Which, said store didn't card for 18 to purchase. It had a powerful impact on my life. And I still own it. It's a very dark in your face album. Lots of Churches protested against it. I'm surprised, he came to my town, on his "DEAD TO THE WORLD TOUR". I remember studying the cover art in my hands, as I listened to the album, at their CD listening station.
This album made me feel like I had super powers when I listen to it. Amazing video BTW it's nice to finally see somebody on YT really give this album it's flowers because it's superb it helped me get through high school and gave me strength for real. The song The Reflecting God was on another level it's one of the most powerful songs of all time.
Hell of a first video! Coming from a relative non-Manson fan, this was absolutely one of the best albums of the 90's, and this band's best by a country mile. And you're doing one of my favorite movies/soundtracks next? Jesus dude, I'm already in whenever you pull the trigger on a patreon!
I've been working with a couple different bands recently doing recording and mixing using all the latest tech and went back and listened to antichrist about a month ago and I was still shocked by the depth and layering. It still holds up and sounds so amazing, the sheer amount of work that went into the mixing of that album is crazy let alone the amount of work that went into the marketing and concept of the album
Ooh I love it when a random video gets recommended to me that manages to reignite my enthusiasm for music from my youth! Antichrist is an album from my teens that has really held up, unlike a lot of other stuff I was listening to at the time (hello nu-metal!). It’s an album that I’ll still put on and listen to all the way through at least once a year, and it really merits a full listen. I’d have liked this video to be longer, and see you do a full track by track breakdown tbh!
this dude in his prime was high energy and amazing.. i remember seeing them perform at limelight in nyc and he came down the stairs willie wonka style (even doing the fake fall somersault).. he took some girl's eyeglasses off of her face and put them on his in one smooth gesture and then mocked being blind. it was awesome that dude was incredible in his day.
As a 13 year old when it was released, it blew my mind and still does to this day. Truly one of the greatest albums ever. My favorite album hands down. Thank you for the vid.
I've always been a massive Queen fan, and was already a Manson fan for a couple years before Antichrist Superstar came out. People don't generally see how I can love both bands, but you nailed it with the fact that this is a rock album at its core, BIG, and like a rock opera... which is quite similar to Queen, just a lot more aggressive and heavy. It was an amazing time to be a Manson fan when this came out. The tour that came after was incredible too.
Dude I love Manson, Queen, Kool Keith, Prodigy, Placebo, Justin Townes Earle, Miles Davis all very different it’s good it’s good dosnt matter what label they’ve been stuck under
You got something here man, I just randomly clicked and actually watched the whole thing. I'm shocked this is apparently your first video. Anyway, I have a 90's music podcast and would love to have you on sometime.
I just turned 40 and missed this genre of music the first time it came around. Been getting into a lot of 90’s industrial and rock lately so i’m excited to follow this channel!
I don't know how long you've been making videos, but this was very well produced. I was only disappointed that it wasn't longer. This could be an amazing docu-series with run times around 45 minutes in length.
A great deep dive!!! I would be glad if you do some more of these for Industrial bands like Throbbing gristle, Coil, Skinny puppy, Einstürzende neubauten, Current 93, Cabaret voltaire, front 242, Godflesh and even Nine inch nails. Keep it up you're doing great!!!
i just realized you made that crazy miku hatsune cover of antichrist superstar... that is batshit insane...and you have made my night much better good sir
holy shit that was amazing ... im showing a buddy how to play guitar and a few manson songs ...hes going to love this this song slaps with the vocaloid voicing ...the vocal warble at the end as an outro was a really good touch SUBBED GOOD SIR SUBBED MOARRR CONTENT
Excellent vid. Loved your breakdown. I've had this album for 27 years, and learned new things about it. How this channel doesn't have 1m subs already is a Sin.
This album changed my life, I still listen to it to this day. It was 1996 and I was a 13 year old high school kid who thought all the music that ever existed was what you heard played on the radio. Then I saw a poster of Manson in a girl's locker and got into him from there. Each listen I still hear something new in there, such are the layers in each song. To a 13 year old boy it scared the living hell out of me. The music was scary and along with 'satanic' imagery I genuinely felt like i was doing something really really bad by listening to it. That's exciting, having that innocence and fear of something that as a 40 year old I can never recapture again. He was seen as a complete freak, my friends and family really worried about me listening to it. If people found out you liked him you'd get labelled a freak and people genuinely thought you were going to cut yourself or kill cats.
Great video. Informative and insightful. Manson was kind of a force of nature back then, the last dangerous rock star, and this album and all the media coverage around it was captivating.
I've been a Manson fan for over 20 years now, and I got to say, this video really blew my mind... The effort on creating this material really shows. The attention to detail! not only visually, but musically wise. New sub definitely. Thanks for bringing some fresh air to a record that seems to never age
My dude, this was an excellent, all killer, no filler video. I can't overstate how important this album was to me growing up, and it's very clear you feel the same. I can't wait to see what else you dive into (THE CROW?! Please and thank).
I love my feed. Sometimes I stumble across something or someone destined for big things. Doesn't hurt that you're first vid is covering one of my favourite albums of all time. Think I'll stick around.
It's a fantastic album. Beginning to end it grabs you does not turn you loose , and then you hit track 99 and you're like WTF. It keeps you screaming for more. Great review dead on!!!
Definitely a classic. I picked this one up a week or two. After it’s release. And fell in love with t. And my mom like the song The Beautiful People. She almost rebelled against The Catholic Church.
Great video! I'm honestly suprised by the fact that you have less than a hundred subscribers. This video was very well edited and narrated. You earned a sub my friend, keep it going!
Related to the production aspect, but the attention to fine details is what makes this album so intriguing to me after all these years. The album is full of tiny little bits of flavor that are easy to miss. Like in The Beautiful People, there is just the faintest sound of a piano tinkling, buried in the intro, descending notes that give the start of the song this eerie, haunted house vibe that matches perfectly with the album art. Stuff like that is all over the record, atmospheric notes that people definitely miss if they are only paying attention to the primary instrumentation.
This music is awesome without the packaging and artwork, but I feel the packaging and artwork adds so much to the overall experience. The trilogy has extremely good artwork & packaging.
I listened to this album at least once every single day for over a year, back then. I used to play car games listening to 1996. That kind of non-stop consistent rhythm seemed to add a lot of hmmph to those games. For me this album has been what I consider a perfect album: one in which I wouldn't change a single thing, and every single moment is special. Never quite stopped listening to it so far. Still listen to one song or another once in a while. Occasionally I also go around at home singing Kinderfeld. :)
This album and Manson shaped me into the beliefs and thought structures I have today. This is one of, if not the greatest metal/rock albums of all time!!
Fantastic video essay. This album was a revelation to 12 year old me. I had a loosely religious upbringing and attended Christian school untill the 5th grade. Always felt uneasy and off with religion, but the programming to fear Hell left me with a anxiety ridden whirlwind of cognitive dissonance that was always in the background. This album instilled a rebellious defiance to that fear, one which I felt confidently for the first time. It litterally helped flip a switch in my head, and I'm extremely grateful for it.
I was at the show from the date on the album (speaking of Irresponsible Hate Anthem) it was at Dayton Hara Arena... which is gone now, I have many great memories of that place.
Thank you for this review. I sometimes feel like I'm screaming into the void about how good this album is. I mostly run in indie/punk circles in the music I and my friends make and listen to, but even among the metalheads and industrial music people I know, this record gets dismissed. None of us have a good opinion of Manson himself these days, but that doesn't change the fact this album kicks ass. It has fucking riffs for days! Holds up just as much as when I heard it as a teenager, if not more now that I know something about composition. You touch on so many things I appreciate, like the mixing of 1996. The fact that Mechanical Animals was such a different followup but just as good in its own way is pretty amazing, too. It's also amusing to look back on how frightened some people were of this album (now that I'm not 16 and getting called into the guidance counselors office post-Columbine for being a freak.) Subbed.
Commenting to help the algorithm 😆 Excellent video about an excellent album. Manson changed my life back in the day. I was already a fan when this album launched (when I was 16), and I love all of MM's albums, but AS is still a benchmark in rock.
