I get the impression that Jim is the most down-to earth of all her husbands and relationships. A decent and stable person, a far cry from the other people in her life.
True. I also believe DiMaggio's feelings were true for Marilyn but he had inhibitions and hangups he was having a tough time dealing with, being married to what the world believed then, and still do, that she was the most beautiful and sexiest woman to have ever walked the earth, which she is. FYI, they were planning to remarry when she died. She was murdered.
There is a quote by him which and shows how deeply and truly he loved her: "I never knew Marilyn Monroe [...] I knew and loved Norma Jean". I guess she would have lived a life full of happiness and love if she stayed with him, not gone to Hell-ywood.
When you listen to James Dougherty’s interview about his wife ,NormaJean, and then listen to Arther Miller’s interview about his wife,Marilyn , the difference is astounding . James has so much more heart and soul as a man . He has so much more dignity and kindness as a human being .
Agreed. Miller was despicable, just see how he behaved with his own son who was mentally retarded. Plus read Maria Riva ´s biography about her mother, Marlene Dietrich, in which she tells Miller used to have orgies with women. He was interested in Marilyn only because he wanted to f*** her. Poor Marilyn... she always surrounded herself with the wrong poeple...
Agree. If you read Goddess by Anthony Summers, Miller wrote terrible things in his diary about her then left it out in full view for her to find. He wrote he 'pitied' her & she was 'genetically unfit to be a mother". He only wanted a screen siren, not a real woman who had insecurities & flaws like we all do.
This man really loved her, because in those times of male-dominated society, to let her go and do what she desired...that takes a lot of love! Real love is when one sacrifices their own happiness for the sake of the loved one! Hat off to you, Mr. Dougherty!
Peggy ONeill, Yes. A true gentleman. If only Marilyn Monroe could have appreciated him. We might not have had Marilyn Monroe, but I do believe that it would have been in her best interest to stay with Jim. She could have been a stunning, healthy wife and mom. If only.
Jimmy , has a the practical all American Point of View of Men from his generation, what respect! And the idea of Norma Jean having his influence in her life, even for a short time, served her well ...This you can count on. .
Thank you for uploading this video. It was a very interesting interview with MM's first husband who knew MM before all the fame and other things that hurt her years later.
I wish Marilyn had stayed married to James Dougherty and had a child with him. But she had to divorce him according to him because she couldn’t be married in her first contract with 20th Century Fox. ☹️
I don’t buy that as I read so many movie actresses had abortions in Hollywood to keep working and have a good figure. I think Jeanne Craine has four sons and she was already famous. She kept on working and she was probably about Marilyn’s age.
While she was alive, Jim Dougherty's second wife would not allow him to mention Marilyn Monroe. Only when Marilyn died did he defy his wife. He got a call from a police friend who told him his former wife was dead. He got off the phone and said, "Say a prayer for Norma Jeane, she's dead". After his second wife's death he made a lot more appearances and gave many interviews. He even wrote a book about Marilyn Monroe/Norma Jeane and their marriage.
Missditabomb why would he mention his former wife Norma Jean who changed to become Marilyn Monroe (a sex symbol) that goes around and have relationships with married men... why would he mention his former wife in front of his current wife? That would’ve been so disrespectful.. and he seems like a respectable gentleman!
Frederico- I can't find your name in the LAPD retired member book. I worked with Jim in the early '70s at the LAPD Academy in Elysian Park as we were both instructors; Jim on the range and I as a law instructor. Jim was one nice guy.
They should've stayed together. He loved Norma Jean and not Marilyn Monroe, he truly loved the real woman behind the Marilyn Monroe image. Fame attracts the eye of bad people and she fell into evil hands. It sounds like she was a lost child wanting to be loved.
It wasnt meant to be. Maybe half of her would like to stay and the other half wanted to fly high like most of young ones do. There are so many " maybes" about each of us ...I believe nothing is random, that everything happens for a purpose. " Love is like a river...sometimes it' s peaceful , sometimes wild and free". And so is life .
Marilyn should've stayed with this man. She thought the grass would be greener on the Hollywood side. Instead, they exploited her. Jim seems like a good, selfless man. He let her go and live out her "dream". No hard feelings either. That's real love. Marilyn was always looking for love, but she never realized she had it once (with Jim).
@@carolynelevin88 Yes, that is also true. I just think he probably would've looked out for her best interest more than her other husbands ever did. Almost everyone in her life used her to some degree.
@@Im_so_Retro85 ahhh... he made her take provocative photos to show and brag to his friends. he was a macho man who believed women belonged in the house. he was jealous of her and often left her alone at home crying because men would become fixated on his wife. when she started modeling he mocked her ambitions. he was basically Joe Dimaggio without the physical assaulting.
@@naracharlize3792 Oh wow, I didn't know that about him. That is sad. Most men of her generation were misogynistic and macho though, so that doesnt surprise me.
@@Im_so_Retro85 that's true. i think he def softened his views the older he got. In his book he wonders if he should've stayed with her after the divorce, he says she still wanted a relationship. I think he was the nicest out of all her husbands but def not as nice as the comment section is making him out to be 😅
Mr James Dougherty was the one !! Dear Norma Jean should of stayed Married too....fame and its trappings took her away........ Love peaceful serenity be too Dear Norma Jean. .
+ Marilyn Monroe Video Archives, why is it you do not post the year the interview was taken? It would be good to see when and where the interview was taken.
Yahoo commenters always make the person out to be special, he's quiet and comtemplative because he's old, but he was exactly like any other man. Of course he had a temper, of course he wanted things his way, no she wouldn't have been happier with him. She was too young, 16, a child. Then she wanted a life in show business, if she stayed with him since 16 she would have been miserable.
how could he have left his young wife???poor girl cried at the thought of him leaving her all alone. what a dreadful mistake. it didn’t take much for him to make her happy!
She said that the marriage wastn a bad one but but it wastn a happy one either. She just said that she was dying of boredom because they had nothing to talk about and wanted to focus on her career.
I can relate to this as I was once in relationship with guy that I had nothing to talk to about with him. Just like that. Not bad, but as a deep thinker and intellectual I feel like there is kinda wall between us.
"She was two ppl." True. He hd 2 let her go, because he knew she belonged 2 the world. Very polite, good ole boy type. L8r, MM desperately wanted children, but the STUDIO sd NO! The Studio ALSO broke up MM n Joltn Joe, the love of her life. In her last movie w/Dean Martin, there r out takes of MM playn w/2 kids. Its Precious! Giggling n rolln round. God bless MM-My Marilyn. XxOo
I had red years ago that yes Joe DiMaggio as much as he loved her was jealous and always thinking she was having affairs... who knows maybe she was ... somebody else said he was a cheap bastard but I don't know if I believe that
She was a sweetie and he knew the real genuine woman. As fame and ambition took over she had to toughen up. I suspect that there were a lot of broken hearts including hers.
Just two kids thrown together. They should have never married. A typical man's reaction when he's rejected, he gets his revenge. He obviously did not love her ever.
He is a wonderful Kind soul But let's be Very HONEST HERE HE REALLY DIDNT KNOW MARYLIN MONROE BECAUSE SHE WAS NOT CREATED AS YET HE KNEW NORMA JEAN !!!
He seems like a decent man... but what I fail to understand is that how come none of her husbands were successful in giving her the basics that she craved for... love and security... and they just left her to die alone...
Her marriage to Jim was arranged by her Fosterer as State foster £ stops at 16. Arthur Miller loved her image not her real self. His comments about 'pitying' her for her MH anxieties & her being 'genetically unfit to be a mother " etc in his diary are vile (in the well respected book' Goddess' by A Summers) . Dimaggio couldn't cope with her image & her dream to do serious acting. He wanted a stay at home wife.
Norma Jean...( Marilyn Monroe)....she wanted to be a star more then she wanted to be a wife and mother at the time.....and she never could find true happiness with a man, I believe she had abandonment issues.....Jim was truly in love with her and I believe Joe Demaggio was also....too bad he was a drinker and Marilyn divorced him for cruelty
She wanted to be a mother but maybe wanted adoration from acting because she didn't get love as a child. Chased fame and the wrong men and maybe didn't realise when they loved her like Jim and Joe. Both loved her
Yeah good man and he "loved"her BUT he abandoned her just because she couldn't be formally married to her. If he truly loved her he d have stayed and they d have figured eveything out
@@musicaltheatergeek79 People who don't research their facts. I don't know much about miller's marriage but Joe dimaggio had been divorced a while before meeting Marilyn
Too bad they couldn’t have stayed together. Kind of like how Dolly Parton being married to her non famous husband for so long despite their career differences. Too bad, in those days I guess the people in charge of her contract had so much control over her personal life.
Marilyn shouldve went back with him when she was contemplating to end her career. Shouldve been atleast close with him. But they mightve some differences with one another we dont know about.
+mba2ceo I hate to say it even tho I am a Marilyn fan but Jim had the more fulfilling life cuz he married & had children after she divorced him & lived a long and happy life even tho he was not a rich & famous actor. Marilyn would had still be alive today if she was not attracted to powerful men like JFK & RFK also to the mob men from that time. Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of hers but she made the wrong choices & the choices she made lead to her death.
Ýóúþúbe Porque não colocam legenda pra gente entender????? Se não dá não posta então nada em inglês! !!!Caralho!!!!!! Estamos no Brasil!!!!! Português! !!!!!!!!!
Oh come if you care about you would of never left by herself , she had no parents and you leave her,she would of never went to be a movie star. I don't think you care about her because she was mental. Now you talk to late.
If he had not been so jealous of Marilyn's modeling ,actting , and supported her like Dolly Partons husband does. Marilyn would have stayed with Jimmy. But in those days a woman stayed home and had babies, she didn't go out and get a job. He was okay with the modeling at first but it became much bigger than what he wanted. Thanks for posting this I love hearing these stories..I loved Jimmys book...
