Marine Binoculars Buyer's Guide 

A really nice description of the important differences between marine and sporting binoculars.

The binoculars and rifle scopes in the movies always have that stabilizing technology...they are always steady like a rock. Seriously now , good video and learning guide for buying.

i just bought a pair of 10 x 50 bushnell binocs for $46.00 from e bay. they are rubber coated and have a porro prism. and they are coated. i really like the insta focus on the bushnells. i have a pair of 7 x 35 bushnells also. they came with a carry case and neck strap and fold down eye cups which i like because i wear glasses. very happy with them and they were only $6.00 more than the 7 x 35s which i bought in 1981.

I've gotten by with 8x40 straight barrel binoculars. They are small and light enough in weight to hold steady.

One other thing about objective diameter. Some internal optics don't utilize the entire diameter. The prisms are actually too small! Hold the binoculars at arms reach and check if the pupil is really round and not squared off. Cheap doesn't pay!

Yeah...one of my newbie crew members brought his 10x42 Nikon aboard, worked perfect for him in the mountains though Baltic at 4-5 bft wind rendered them pretty unusable.

I'm guessing you're mid fifties. As we age, our eyes can't dilate the same. So at your age, 7x50 is wasting light in the exit pupil.
