There are so many layers to go through with this Mariners and Twins trade involving Jorge Polanco for Gabriel Gonzalez, Justin Topa, Darren Bowen, Anthony DeSclafani and Cash. The Biggest layer to cut through is how this impacts the bigger picture! The Blake Snell rumors, the Gilbert/Kirby/Castillo trade rumors, the Dylan Cease trade rumors. Let's discuss it all.

Getting Polanco and not having to trade any of our starting pieces for a proven bat is much bigger than it appears. That rotation staying in place for next year is huge. I'll be interested to see if Jerry is in the market for a 3rd baseman.
@jayrah33
@jayrah33 4 месяца назад
Jerry got his 3rd base when he got Urias earlier this offseason and just supplemented and essentially made 3B a switch hitter by pushing Rojas over there to platoon. If one or the other or both end up being Kolten Wong the first half, there seems to be room to re-evaluate at the deadline. Brilliant stuff by Jerry.

Y'all are gonna love Polanco. Don't expect 30 HR but if he plays 150+ games he should have no problem hitting 20. He's pretty clutch too. Fantastic hitter.

@jayrah33 excellent point. Thank you for that. I forgot about Urias. What did you think about the utility player Jerry and Co got for us today? Have any insight on him? Locked On Mariners sounded pretty excited about what he brings to Seattle (or Tacoma perhaps)

@poopmcgee2410 I'm excited about him!!! I've watched him tear my Mariners up in the batters box several times over the years. From both sides of the plate. Hopefully he has a big year for us. @jacobchase483

As an M's fan, I think it's probably close to an overpay but nowhere near as lopsided as Trade Values says. Polanco is likely the option at 2B for 2 years until Cole Young is big-league-ready. and Seattle has a history of developing bullpen arms. They also have acquired a few interesting arms this offseason that could replace Topa. It wasn't Woo, Miller, Brash, or Munoz so I'm ok with it. It makes the 2024 Big League roster better without giving up a big piece heading forward. Given the budget restraints the owners have placed upon the front office, they have to make more trades than signings. Would have loved him for a bit cheaper, but it should work out much better than the AJ Pollock, Tommy LaStella, and Kolten Wong moves from last offseason.

But then they moved him to his best position (3rd), he was one of the better defenders in baseball there the past two years. Definitely seems like a win-win trade. Topa is super consistent, Descalfani could bounce back and Gonzalez just mashes but you never know with prospects. I know Polanco had a leg issue last year, why was he limited the year before? Was it the same issue? Either way I’m excited to bring him on board, we definitely needed a player of his caliber. Always tough to see a long time fan favorite leave, especially a clutch guy like Polanco I’d imagine? But it sounds like you’ve got a top prospect ready to make the jump? Good luck this year, I’ve always been a fan of the Twins, Puckett was my favorite player as a youngster before Griffey arrived.

I don't see this as one side or the other "won", I see it as the M's got what they needed for the next two years until their up and coming infield prospects are ready, while the Twins have the higher potential to win down the road if one or two of the prospects really pan out. It's a win win, with higher future upside for the Twins, more immediate upside for the Mariners.

It was a great win-win trade. Love this for both sides. Mariners get a hell of a switch hitter, and MN shores up pitching while getting some prospects, and knowing the future of 2B is in Triple A right now with Brooks Lee. Guy is a stud and will likely move up later this year with Julien taking 2B in the meantime (then moving to 1B/DH).

@erikolson5440
@erikolson5440 4 месяца назад
As an M’s fan I think they overpaid a bit but they needed an impact bat in the infield, rolling out Rojas and Urias as your everyday starters just wasn’t going to cut it. The Twins wanted Miller or Woo and the M’s didn’t want to part with either so they had to overpay to get the trade accomplished. I personally like the trade though, it was worth overpaying to get the bat we sorely needed and we didn’t have to subtract from our starting rotation to do so. Losing Topa sucks, especially when we haven’t found an adequate replacement for Sewald. I’d expect them to bring in an arm or two to bolster the bullpen before the season starts. Maybe the guys we got from the Braves for Kelenic fill those roles. Writing out the lineup, when you have guys like Haniger, France, Raley that could all be batting bottom 3rd of the lineup you like how it looks on paper! Big if on whether they all can stay healthy however but if they can, you gotta like our chances with 5 stud SPs!

Polanco's going to be our #3 bat. It may have been an overpay, but the Mariners desperately needed his offense. The Twins seem to have gotten pieces that fill their needs extremely well too. I like this trade so much for both teams. The M's finally round out the lineup with a bonafide bat and keep all of their top 5 in tact. All that talk about "we're fine if we decide to be done" was all posturing. They had to make a move. Meanwhile the Twins get a decent starter, a stud mid-to-high leverage reliever and some really solid additions to their farm system. For me, the Twins needed and got more, so that may give them the 51-49 edge. But the M's needed less and held onto the Miller/Woo tandem, so not only is everything in tact in the rotation, but as you mentioned they could still pull the trigger and go absolutely all in by swinging for Cease, if that's really on the table. If that happens (I don't expect it to happen but because it's trader Jerry wouldn't be surprised either) just by keeping the option on the table it would make the M's a much bigger winner in this trade than it appears at first blush. To add Polanco to Haniger, Urias, Raley, Garver and Zevala is already crazy. Adding Cease to the rotation on top of it would be WILD.

Only 2 hitters with the potential to hit 30 hrs? Julio, Cal, Mitch one and Mitch two all have the potential to hit 30 bombs, granted the latter two have to stay healthy. Throw in JP, Urias and Raley and you have three others with 15-25 hr potential. Plenty of pop now with the Polanco addition. Lots of injury concerns however, hopefully they all can make it through.

From a Twins Fan perspective. I love Polanco; talented, team player, has really, really, really good at-bats. I wish him the best of health and a great season for the Mariners. I agree DeSclafani has a #5 spot to lose; I suspect Varland will prefer the #6 spot (aka #1 in St Paul to start the year the way Ober did last year). The team may as well pending other moves; they'd have no depth if something went wrong (and when doesn't it go wrong). This looks like a solid win-win, though fate (and injuries/performances) can make monkeys of us all.

Three players that do not matter much. BP is the one thing the M’s are consistently good with. DeSclafani wasn’t going to provide much he was the 7th starter at best. Gonzalez is the piece here. He is probably over ranked given how much he struggled last year. But a prospect and filler for Minnesota and M’s get a solid bat but one that is aging not great on D and been hurt. Think it is a balanced trade.

What you failed to mention, is that the M’s added a much needed bat, while relatively remaining at the same position that they were in pre-trade (financially), allowing them to continue to add, and/or retain their ability to add more significant pieces at the trade deadline.

Shannon Drayer, a journalist for Seattle 710AM dismisses the Cease rumor. Why would the M’s who is looking to upgrade offensively would expend the same resources on Cease? Shannon stated that the M’s front office realized early on that young pitching is their strength. Jim Riley’s argument was that the M’s would trade for Cease, then turn around a trade (Miller or Woo) to get a bat. Getting Cease now serves no purpose. The M’s filled out their lineup and the M’s plan A to keep the rotation intact is accomplished.
@Sytha

Seattle isn't done yet. Need to add a bullpen arm. Disco had no real place on their squad other than insurance for Bryan Woo's lack of Stamina but they have Emerson Hancock in theory for that. He was always going to be odd man out in Seattle since he was the #6 or #7 starter. Topa is a big loss. Going from 3 high leverage arms to 2 is pretty concerning. Gabby Gonzales sucks to lose and Bowen was one of the few pitchers left in the system with promise. Polanco is exciting and definitely fills a big need. Seattle is done adding Bats unless Ty France is part of a deal and move Raley to 1st. Twins look like they won the trade tho. Getting Topa, Gonzales and Bowen for Polanco and taking DeSclafani is definitely a + for them since they were always going to deal Polanco to someone.

@Visher
@Visher 4 месяца назад
Exactly. It isn't an overpay if you have something in excess and lacking in others. The Mariners are striking gold with their pitching, the coaches are turning nobodies into studs. So seeing as they have excess in arms but a lack of bats, it only makes sense to pay to acquire a bat. And it really remains to be seen if it's an overpay, just Topa and DeSclafani aren't over paying. The other two are prospects that haven't seen the majors yet and could completely flop.

If Dipoto wants to overpay let him empty the farm. I think the Ms overpaid but they had to. I kind o f understand the Suarez trade but why Kelenec? Are they punishing him for tħe way 23 went down? As a Braves fan, thanks Ms!

There’s a lot of debate about sending Kelenic away in the Mariners fandom but the 2 main theories are: 1) They needed to pick someone to sell with some bad contracts, and the Braves might’ve wanted him specifically 2) There’s been bad blood between Kelenic and the org since as early as 2021 when they kept him in AAA. If they were punishing him for something it would be for that, because 2023 was his best year yet.

@@tjtribble9932 Number 1 really makes sense. The Braves may have wanted him and the Mariners said you can have him but take these 2 other guys with him. The other 2 were definitely bad contracts, especially Evan White. Țhe Braves got rid of them within days of the trade. It could very well be 2. He didn’t speak highly of the Mariners organization on Foul Territory. Might have been combination.

@@gregdiamond6023 yeah it was 100% a salary dump, the question is whether they chose Kelenic as the export because he was the best fit (and the bad blood is a coincidence) or because they wanted him gone.

Polanco I's very underrated. Baseball trade value has this Wrong they gave up just guys to get an above average player. If you can Add solid switch hitters you do it

It's an overpay for Polanco, but one that the Mariners can afford.

Seattle over paid, but it fills a need. They have more prospects.

It's unlikely, but I would say signing Snell is still a possibility. They could sign Snell then move Woo or Miller to the bullpen to upgrade the bullpen (with Topa now gone). But like I said, it is unlikely but is still an option if Seattle is still interested in Snell.

IF we signed Snell it would mean we’re trading one of Gilby/Miller/Woo

O's should now offer Seattle: Mountcastle Westberg Cowser Irving and Povich for Gilbert and 1- low end Prospect. Seattle gets 3 hitters they need and O's get their starter. Win Win. Irving is a gift!

It's good to know that GMs don't use baseball trade values. It's a horrible tool..

Using baseball trade values immediately discredits you. Stop using it. According to baseball trade values ty adcock can get you Goldschmidt and arenado..
