Thank you for the very honest and very fair review of my hack! It was done at a time where I had very little game design experience (not like I'm a professional now). I'm glad to see it's still being enjoyed this long ago. I understand the project isn't going to be enjoyed by everyone and it's really rough around the edges. I hope people have some interest in the spiritual success, "Koopa Kingdom Escape" that I've been working on over the past 2 years.

Mike, I'm glad to see you're showing great improvements as a reviewer. You're moving away from simply "giving an opinion" to actually "describing the product" so that the reader/listener can make his/her own mind about whether they would like it or not (which is what a professional reviewer is supposed to do). Some subjectiveness still shines through, on occasions, but you're so much better overall that I can't really complaint. Keep it up. Looking forward to see your future reviews now.

Zyad48 - The Warrior of Evil oh yes, it got crazy by the end of the 32bit era. Weird how technology changes even basic things like writing.

@ConnerCJ2012 4 года назад
I kinda agree on that. It might be fine for fans who want a bigger challenge, and they still show a lot of polish regardless, but we rarely ever got a ROM-hack that actually features difficulty reminiscent of that of an official Nintendo title. I don't know what the fascination is that fans have towards making frustrating levels and fangames. The same goes for the custom stages in Mario Maker.

***** Eh, depends on the creativity of the creator on how those colors get used. There's a palette of 54 or so, although granted certain tints aren't present and there's pretty strict restrictions on how to allocate and use them. But nonetheless, an NES game can be made beautiful. I think the dull colors of Mario Adventure probably have a lot to do with the weather gimmicks, enemies, and custom power-ups that sort of limited what the palettes could be used for. Or maybe he just really wanted it to look that way, I dunno.

Cinemassacre Well a "hack" is more commonly associated with malicious intent whereas a mod is just that, a modification for an existing program. I guess you could call it either one though, But additional levels, enemies, items, characters and so forth is usually referred to as a mod in the gaming community.
@paulgraves1392
@paulgraves1392 9 лет назад
Cinemassacre Mods and hacks are not one and the same. A hack is an ingenius way of solving a problem. A mod is the changes that the hack allows the person to make. In this instance, someone wants to make a new Mario game that can run on the NES using graphics from Super Mario Bros. 3. The problem is that the data in the Super Mario Bros 3 cartridge has already been processed into binary. The person would then develop a hack to figure out what the binary means and how it can be changed. Once binary is understood or converted into a human readable form, then the modding can begin.

the deal with the vine can actually happen in the original smb3, what happened was you hit a "?" block while the vine was growing and it canceled it out. the animation of what ever you hit is what stopped the vine, if you go to world 3-4 in smb3 you can do the same thing with the lives near the end, and the same thing with 5-1 in the water area

I don't usually talk about another hack on videos like this, but this video reminded me of another Super Mario Bros. 3 hack I played a while back. It's not as hardcore as Adventure, but it's still an awesome hack of Super Mario Bros. 3! It's called Super Mario Bros. 3Mix, it's a hack by Captain Southbird. Now, without spoiling too much. The level designs are clever, the difficulty is fair but it also isn't easy, and it CAN offer a challenge at some point in the game. There are a good amount of secrets in the game, as well as a variety of new power ups not seen in the original SMB3. The option to select between Mario, Luigi, and Toad is also present, something we only saw in SMB2 at the time. The worlds are mixed (hence the term 3Mix) in that they offer something from different Mario games. You'll see some things from Mario Land, Mario Land 2, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World, and a few others. Honestly one of the most clever hacks I'd seen in a while, and in my opinion, comes closest to being a classic like SMB3 while retaining the elements of the newer Mario games. I think it's definitely worth giving it a shot!

9Y0 There's actually a difference. Modding is legal, as it's done with permission from the developer- usually because a game's developer made it legal for anyone to mod their game. Examples include games like Half-Life or Minecraft. Hacking is illegal, as it's done without permission from the developer- thus, an infringement of copyright. The most commonly hacked games would probably be the classic Mario games.

@wanderingrandomer 10 лет назад
Mike, I respect your judgement on these matters, but I've noticed that that you seem to have a rather elitist attitude regarding the difficulty of games. This might be due to us being gamers of different generations but, think about it, is having no checkpoints fun? Is constantly failing at a level, having to repeat it again and again from the start, really super fun for people? Games should have the option to save midway through so as to make it, you know, fun? Rather than hole-in-door punchingly hard. It just makes me not want to play anymore and, contrary to popular opinion, is not all the more satisfying at the end. Sorry, ranting...

I believe it is satisfying when there are less check points in some cases. I was born in 92, so that's a whole decade away from Mike's time. It might be preference, but I also believe that check points have spoiled some gamers. Gamers now complain when there aren't enough check points when the case might be that there are too many check points and the gamer is so spoiled, they think they need more help. Like I said, its all preference. Unlike Mike, I don't think those "guides" that beat the level for you or make you invincible the whole level are bad. If that's how someone wants to beat the game, then by all means, let the game do the work. But I do think gamers don't appreciate the help found in games now and I consider that being spoiled.

You get a better sense of accomplishment (like Mike said) after beating a more difficult game. It's not a game for those kids who just play a game to beat it. Games like this are what prove who the gamers really are.

Checkpoints done right can be satisfying. I think Super Mario World had the right balance.

pollo20x6 Ok, spoiling players is an issue. There's a fine line between appropriate and patronising difficultly. For some, risk is a motivator, I guess. Although, the idea that all could be lost at one miss-timed jump, does not appeal to me. Auto saves, for example, are great news because I'm not constantly stressed as I know that even if I fuck up, I can just pick it straight up again where I left off. This allows me to loosen up and enjoy myself playing the game and appreciate it more, which is kinda the point. Who wants to be stressed playing Mario, anyway? (Incidentally, I was also born in '92.)

The vine glitch (where it stops rising) can happen in the actual Super Mario Bros 3 game. Happens to me in 6-10 if I do not climb it as it rises.

the Japanese Mario 2 is effectively the official romhack of Mario 1 if you think about it, so that's a good example to point out with Mario Adventure to Mario 3

Even Super Mario Bros 3 was a tough, challenging game that casual players wouldn't have patience for. That game takes some skill to get through, and I was only able to beat it because I grew up with it, dying over and over.

At 5:00 you mention an "invisible block" interestingly, this is one of the few issues you mention that is actually from the original SMB3. It's quite interesting IMO; when you hit a vine block ,you release an "enemy" it goes straight up and creates climbable vine blocks as it goes. What happened here I suspect is that you moved the moving vine "enemy" off-screen, which caused it to unload. This also occurs in the original game. In fact, in the tower in world 5 you can hit the vine block, than move off screen- and make the level unbeatable in much the same manner.

I remember seeing this game awhile back and not playing it because Nintendo didn't design the levels and that was enough to keep me away. Now I might give it a look.

This kind of reminds me of the creepypasta stories we get a little bit because this is an innovative take on the game done by a fan of the series. Plus it has it's surprises here and there. The only difference is there's no "hyper realism" or blood on every level or messages from "God" or something to that effect. It's pretty cool.

The palette is depressing, unless playing a level on a sunny day. The enemies, however, are bright and new, especially the Shy Guy replacing most Koopa Troopas. But there are some glitches, such as Bullet Bills moving backwards, and the bottom interface shaking when holding objects. Glitches aside, it's the best hack for SMB3 lovers looking for a challenge.

Being born in 82, i miss getting that flash of just pure frustration of dying before the end of a level, having to go alllll the way back to the beginning several times over just to beat that one spot. Now games are too easy with their difficulty settings, checkpoints and predictable enemy movements. I miss these gems that require thought before action, us old farts were brought up on the original Zelda where if you die you go back to the start of the dungeon, if that game was made now you would just spawn back at the start of that room, flicker for 5 seconds, and get an achievement for killing a monster while invincible. I'll leave my 2 cents over here.

I like the weather change aspect. Well, the rain particularly. It gives such a moody feel. It would be awesome if the next Mario game implemented day/night and weather cycles.

Now that I'm older, I just can't spend as much time playing games as I used to. I'll admit I've been spoiled by things like checkpoints, but I don't have the patience to bang my head against the wall in trial by error gauntlets to gain the skill to pass the level like in these retro remakes.

I can solve the bean stalk glitch. I own the game and love it! It is the baddest ass mario game EVER!. The reason the beanstalk stopped growing is because you hit another block shortly after hitting the beanstalk block. Next time you hit a beanstalk, wait a few seconds to let it grow up all the way before you hit anymore blocks that may be nearby.

New Luigi Bros., Mario Kart 8, and Mario 3D World have reinvigorated my love for Mario. Although the Wii, DS, 3DS, and Gamecube games are very good, Those 3 WiiU games are new classics. I haven't enjoyed any Mario game as much since the N64/SNES days. No exaggeration.

Great video. I didn't even know this existed. For a sense of nostalgic purpose, a friend of mine recently (read: within the last year) picked up a generic NES-y machine, and a copy of Mario 3 to play, and between my experience with the game, and the persistence of said friend and his girlfriend, we eventually managed to beat the game together, something I'd never done without an emulator and save states, and that they'd never done period. I would LOVE to pop this hack in and start up the next great gauntlet with those friends. I bet we'd scream and shout and swear and drink and smoke until we go to the end a month later.

I've noticed that U.S. players tend to love Mario games more than gamers of other nationalities. I guess it's because the NES wasn't the be-all and end-all of consoles elsewhere in the world like it was in the U.S. (and Japan, I guess). I'm from the U.K. and personally, always found Mario's movement and jumping incredibly sluggish, adding unnecessary difficulty. I actually thought this was a *mistake* until Mario 64 came along and kept the sluggish movement.
