3:56 I love this one so much. For those who don‘t know: when Charles Martinet was making all the voice lines for this game, Mario at first was supposed to say something like „That was bad. Try again.“ when the player underperformed. Charles asked to change the line into this one we got now because he thought it doesn‘t fit Mario‘s character and that he would not talk to kids like that. I love this man so much.
I love how even in one of his first roles of the character, he already had an idea of who Mario should be. He really did shape Mario into an actual character, and he would definitely not be the Mario we know today without him.
I love that Nintendo isn't the one who caused Mario to be seen as and characterized as a friendly and kind man, it was all Charles. In fact, this is actually kind of a reflection of Martinet himself.
Something about this Mario feels so warm and wholesome. He feels like a dad who was scolded and punished by his parents (our grandparents) and tries to break the cycle by complementing and motivating his children rather than follow in his parent's footsteps
Fun Fact: The script said something like "you failed, try again" and Charles Martinet asked if they could change it to something more encouraging at 3:56.
1:51 there it is. The thing I always doubted seeing as a young child and remembering it years later questioning if I actually saw that because no one else knew what I was talking about
The game where it all started. Charles Martinet got the role of Mario because his interpretation of the character was so unique and different compared to every other interpretation that came before. And after 32 years of voicing the character, Charles is stepping down from the role and becoming Mario Ambassador. To us Mario fans, he wasn't just the voice of Mario; he WAS Mario, as well as Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and others. It'll be hard to replace him, and I wish both Charles and whoever comes next the absolute best of luck!
One of the first times that Charles Martinet voiced Mario, and it already set in stone for what kind of a character Mario is. Funny, energetic, optimistic, silly, determined, and very Italian. Thank you, Charles, for being the one to give the plumber his "Wahoo!" all these years. Wish you all the best for this next adventure and I hope to still meet you someday.
In a way it shows how PC chads back then (who could afford a PC) were truly at an advantage. So much voice acting work before data-limited consoles could eventually take it on. Really helped Martinet get his feet wet before more advanced projects like Mario 64 came along.
@@KnownAsKenji...you realize this game was released in 1997, right? this released *after* mario 64, the saturn and PS1 were already out, the saturn had a keyboard, and the game was designed for DOS computers on a 486, an almost decade old processor by the time the game released. this is one of the worst games to make a PCMR argument for.
"When a moon heat you eye like a big pizza pie that's amore When Annie lunges out and he takes a bite of your snout that's amorous" -Captions at this exact time
@@sahaprocks7751Yuti’s right though. The original line was akin to “You lose! Try again!” But Martinet knew this game was marketed towards kids and the line sounded discouraging (not to mention it makes Mario sound like a jackass). So he actually requested the script be changed to be more encouraging instead, and this was the result.
I love this. I can get why many people see Mario’s head as scary but for me it’s hilarious. When he flies across the screen, when he sings, when he moves on the ground, everything makes me laugh so much. And his voice is so adorable!
Mario doesn’t usually have a personality also I’m assuming you’re trying to throw shade at sega but sonic has never really been edgy and if you’re talking about shadow he isn’t sega’s mascot
The Disc Man Ima agree with you not on the Mario part I’m more of a Mario guy than sonic it’s true that he doesn’t have much personality I think Luigi (my favorite character) has more emotion than Mario and you can really see it in the Luigi Mansion games with him feeling scared or tears of joy when saving his brother
I had to come back here after I heard Charles was stepping down. Whoever's filling the role has some big shoes to fill. I hope he has a good future ahead of him. Thanks for all the memories Charles

I don’t know why people find this creepy? Mario 64 does the exact same thing. Plus since this was Charles’ first role as Mario, he does a fantastic job, he so charming. It makes me wish they’d let him do more.

You know at first I thought this Mario was terrifying, but martinets voice just makes him freaking adorable. Makes me wonder if they just had Charles say random lines and just used them like that xD
Ahh...I miss the memes....I remember before Fnaf and Undertale came along and the internet was not having stupid fandom wars....Now we have to deal with animatronics rule 34 and undertale references.....
Caleb WOODring Okay, that's enough. We did NOT say that the memes today were bad, only that we miss the previous ones. Memes today are basically the new generation of the same thing. I guarantee that in the past there was a person saying 'ah I miss the old memes i remember before pingas came along and everyone was making references'. Stop being so ignorant and accept the fact that people like those memes for the same reason you loved those ones back in the day. You're being blinded by nostalgia. And judging by how you phrased that, you're probably a teenager that deems he or she was born in the 'wrong generation'.
I know the floating head itself is creepy and a little unsettling and everything, but I actually think as a kid I would have Loved this. Mario sounds so encouraging and light hearted, I think its actually very funny and cute. Does any else feel the same way?
This same Mario head model was used with a device rigged to Charles Martinet's face to have the head actually talk to people in real-time and make Mario entertain attendees at trade shows in the early 90s. This basically makes Mario portrayed by Charles the world's first vtuber.
