I have liked Tom Waits for many years. I have never really imagined anyone but him singing his songs. Tom you style is one of a kind and I love your music. But that song was wrote for her to sing whether you knew it or not when you wrote it. I really was not expecting it to be much of anything. I almost didn't even listen to it. That was not one of the song I was looking for this evening. That is the most beautifully performed that song is ever going to be. Marissa Mulder well done.
First time hearing Marissa Mulder. Here on RU-vid there are so many people who can sing well, but a voice that actually has some personality in its delivery is far less common and a Tom Waits song deserves no less, so good!
Oh yeah..and if I'm particularly gluttonous for punishment I'll follow it up with "Lonely"... I've listened to several versions of this but none holds a candle to Tom...
Thank you for this passionate, melancholic, elysian surprise, ambushing me in the hour between night and dawn. If better ballads of love and loss have ever been or will be written, Tom Waits or Jackson Browne will be their author. She has the perfect voice, a beautiful instrument, equal to any of the greatest. Brava! Thanks again. Subscribed. DOUG out
Tom Waits deserves 95% of the credit, more or less. No matter the singer or accompanist. This is simply not a song that will be surpassed by artists who cover it.
I first heard this song covered by Tim Buckley on Sefronia. Great version with Tim using his "big" voice, one of my favourite songs and also opened my eyes to Tom Waits. This version is fantastic too, I guess good song writing will always shine through.
Wonderful, one of the few covers of this song I can accept. It’s full of emotion and moreover it is interesting to think that she is talking from woman to woman.
@@tomtoce980 I commented on this video 6 years ago and often come back to it. She is an exquisitely beautiful woman and no one covers Tom Waits songs better. I bought the CD of the show. This video I'm sure will get many more views! All the best Tom!
Much better than the Take It With Me cover. Still kinda sounds like high school play singing.... but it's good. Marissa should stop doing covers and write her own songs, because she has a lot of vocal strengths, and I feel like the songs she's picking doesn't showcase them that well. I've listened to 3 so far and this one is the best.
No offense, but the song doesn't work with her calling Martha and saying she's Tom. At least when Bette midler sang the song she changed the lyrics so that it was Betsy Frost calling. Tommy. The singing was good, but you need to change the lyrics to make sense.
I disagree, the lyrics are the lyrics. I think they sound corny and like a huge reach when that’s done. Also imo the song is joyful and I think it was a great cover. Well different strokes I guess.
@@alexcampbell3469 nonsense you idiot. She first performed the song as the musical guest on 'SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" in 1979. She breaks down in tears during the final verse and her version is the most stellar version of this song...period!
