On this episode: Covid-19 surges in some US states amid reopening and quarantine 'fatigue'; the EU's potential ban on travelers from the US; the Supreme Court's surprising decisions on DACA and LGBTQ rights; the evolution of Black Lives Matter protests and calls to defund the police; workshopping slogans for liberals; the results of this week's Democratic Congressional primaries; calls to tear down statues of racist figures from history; the joy of watching TikTok users mess with Donald Trump.

The Brooker/McGrath show has really only just begun. At the moment Brooker is slightly ahead of McGrath, mainly thanks to the in-person totals of Brooker/McGrath - 8,307/1,654, but this is miniscule compared to the absentee ballots - about 6% - This race is really wide open. From the - eu.courier-journal.com/story/news/2020/06/25/kentucky-primary-booker-pulls-ahead-mcgrath-partial-results/3257298001/ The in-person totals from Jefferson County show Booker receiving 8,307 votes to McGrath's 1,654. The Jefferson County Clerk's office mailed out 218,404 absentee ballots to voters as of Monday morning, and as of early Thursday morning it had received 160,699 of those ballots back, according to spokesman Nore Ghibaudy.

doesn't anyone in usa realize that the structure of the government precludes effective management of the nation?
@alloomis1635
@alloomis1635 4 года назад
@Mark Johhson 'how so' deserves an answer. the most obvious flaw is the lack of democracy. the nation is managed to benefit the rich, who fund the politicians who reward their sponsors. this is unjust to the great majority, but it's worse: the very rich have no worries and no concerns beyond getting richer. the usa has been at war, usually covert- more like banditry, from the 1950's both as a marketing exercise and as a device to transfer funds from taxation to munitions share-holders. that money could have been educating citizens and maintaining infrastructure. less obvious but equally damaging, leaving national management in the hands of politicians makes long term planning impossible. in a democracy, the public service can make and offer long term planning to the electorate through referendum, under control of initiative and recall. you can get this result in authoritarian societies, but not for long. only democracy has a natural and effective cure for corruption and incompetence.

Hey there. Reporting from the seedy underground. Minor part of the discussion, about fireworks. People saying "These are not ordinary fireworks, they're huge!". So, the firework market is semi legitimate at the best of times. Illegal in a lot of places, setting up firework stores just over county or state lines etc. Very dodgy outfits to begin with. Here's the thing. Ordinarily towns,, companies etc will purchase larger firework displays for celebrations and corporate functions. There is a steady stream of these fireworks in the market. But a lot of these celebrations and functions have been cancelled because of quarantine. So these semi legitimate distributors still have all this stock on their hands. To manufacture these fireworks and distribute doesn't take a lot of overhead, but they sell good, so there's a large markup. So what these distributors are doing is selling off these stocks of fireworks at a significant markdown, that would ordinarily be sold for celebrations and company functions, to seedy street dealers, who are then selling them to Joe Pyro. Hence you have some pretty, shall we say, impressive firework displays being put on by enthusiasts who are finally getting their hands on stuff that's not usually widely available.

Love the podcast and am always interested in Marks takes on everything. Was a fan even before I found out he's a fellow Dundonian. I had a thought the other day I'd be interested to hear his opinion on. The EU grew out of the European Coal and Steel community which was an attempt to merge the industries of France and Germany so it wouldn't be possible for them to wage war against each other ever again. To what extent does globalisation, with particular reference to the USA and China, have the same effect? Do the cross border supply chains mean that these countries effectively cannot go to war? Or are these supply chains only effecting industries not essential for warfare? Or does modern war not rely on that material infrastructure to the same extent so that the comparison isn't valid?

I think we should maintain healthy skepticism with regards to defunding police. While I accept and support sweeping reform to our justice system and the function of police, my apprehension lies with the Neoliberal tendency to defund our institutions, and privatize them. I think the last thing we want is an unaccountable private police force patrolling our streets. Not saying this is going to happen; but I certainly can see a desire for it from the market Globalists. With regard to statues; I would argue that removing them is effectively the same principle as Orwell's memory hole. The statues may be a blight on our history as a nation, but are nonetheless a part of our history, and should remain to serve as a reminder of the ills of our past. Instead of tearing them down, perhaps a clear and accurate description of who they were and why they were revered, and why they were reviled by any particular group should be etched upon them.

Regarding the defense spending .. the NATO member nations agreed that they "increase their own defense spending to 2% of their respective gross domestic product by 2024". Well, 2024 is a bit into the future. And granted, Merkel announced that (not at least because of corona) Germany wouldn't be able to reach this goal until the early 2030. But it is kind of an LOI (letter of intend) and non binding anyway. And … Germany could raise the payment of their soldiers (even the pension of the retired ones) up to a level that they reach this target. So, the way this agreement is set up doesn't make any sense anyway. Many seem to think that there is kind of a bank account where all the members pay in. This is not the case. All what this is about is how many those countries spend for defense/military, in which way ever. It doesn't make any sense, what so ever, that Trump thinks it would be his business how many the countries spend. Especially since there is no agreement that it has to be spend in a way that they get more equipment and soldiers and can defend them self better. They could fulfill the agreement if they just build new facilities like housing for soldiers, it wouldn't change the ability to defend the country. But, well, sure it makes sense if you use this accusation ("they don't pay their fair share") for political propaganda. Especially without background information. And it is not about "paying" something but "spending" money, even just within their own countries. But not even the most Anti-Trump news inform their viewers about this - maybe because they don't know or don't understand the agreement. And nobody expect Fox News to clarify this. But, to be honest, I would expect that at least Marc would be informed about and let his listeners know it. And about the American tourists in Europe/Italy … well, the U.S. citizens are not really those who travel the most outside of the U.S. even the number increased in the last about 20 years. But, talking about Italy, in 2016 only 2.2 Million tourists out of 50 Million came from the U.S.. Let's say this increased, they are still just a minority. Sure, having 5 to 10 percent more tourists would financially help Italy. But is this worth the risk and would all those really even want to travel from one country with a high infection rate to another where it was the worse before? Yeah, sure, some just don't care, I know. But many still do. About the "the russians helped them by destroying all the buildings in the country (Germany)" .. well, in fact, most buildings in the country were destroyed by the western allies. Even Dresden, which is a city in the east part of Germany, where the "Russian Sector" was has been bombed to ground by british RAF bomber. So, most carpet bombings took place by the Brits and U.S. bomber.

in the German city I live in, we had in the last days not a single new Covid 19 patient in our hospitals. The mask is not so import, if you are outside. But inside at doctors for example or in shops we have to wear it and vulnerable people wear it. Also every shop or institution with public access have worked out some rules for social distancing, which make more or less sense. The defense budget rise, which was silently subscribed by the German government in 2014 at the NATO summit in Wales, is very annoying. It raises the danger of the next world war with Russia and China. Germany also wastes a lot of money there, which goes in part in the US military-industrial complex. Merkel is like Trump just one human being. I never voted for her and never will. She is the opposite of Trump, always very polite. But the politics of the German conservatives is still toxic in many ways.

You should identify as a black, trans gendered, gay, one legged asylum seeking postmodernist endangered hedgehog who was tortured while building the chaz/chop autonomous zone lol. Its great how we went from universal equality and a meritocracy to a victim hood SJW points based aristocracy wtf. The latest edict passed down from the chinese sponsored marxist humanities professors is they want to defund STEM. I suspect because its logic based it will bring them out in a rash.

So you think you can get a STEM degree on a living wage (at Indian standards?) AND get a job in Google? You seem to have some serious delusion about the conditions in India. Let me tell you how things work in India. First, you have to be born in a middle class or upper middle class family, at least, to have a chance at a quality education. Even among your peers, you will have to be one of the best academically, to get a STEM track in schools and later on in college. Arts and Finance streams are usually given to less academically inclined students. I don't agree with this approach, but it is the way it is. Then among those who get STEM in the school, you will have to get into one of India's best universities to have a good chance of getting into a good US university. There are very few such universities in India and at least 100,000 students take the entrance exams to those universities each year. If you have survived the immense pressure and grind of accomplishing all the above without going into depression, congrats, but it is not over yet. You now have to be in the top 5 to 10 percentile of your batch in the college to even be considered for a post good grad school in the US. In addition, you have to have to be involved in some extra-curricular activity and (preferably) have some research experience with an Indian professor (who themselves are picky on which students they want to collaborate with) of some renown. I did not mention Indians going to US unis straight from school, because you either have to be a genius and procure a scholarship or be born in the top 1% (wealth wise) of the population to do that. Even then you won't be guaranteed a job at Google, 'cause it is insanely difficult to get into Google, even after all of the above. I know it is fashionable to trash Indians for your problems, but nobody is putting out the red carpet for anyone in Silicon Valley. Have a nice day.

What I find to be so interesting is that there is no discussion about the massive percentage of pre-existing conditions in the US. We are the unhealthiest population in the world. How many people that think they are “safe” have undiagnosed conditions? What is the economic cost of up to a third of the working population being at risk? It’s not like the economy can return if a third of the workers get seriously sick. Shit the system would shut down if 10% of the working population was high risk. Killing the workers hurts the economy more than shelter in place laws. It’s not like millennials are having kids. You are looking at close to 25 years before a new generation of workers join the force. That’s assuming that birthrates not only return after COVID but increase.

On the H1-B visas, the only reason that those jobs don't go to Americans is that they (corporations) can hire powerless foreign nationals cheaper. There are Americans who can and will do those jobs, and to the extent that there is a shortage of Americans, it is because Americans at that skill level don't want to compete with cut-rate labor out of India or Indonesia. I'm not an immigration hawk by any means, but with the American real unemployment rate at 20%, and thousands of qualified Americans who would take those H1-B jobs, if the wages were not depressed, I would say stop depressing the wages. If you want those H1-B workers in the US, let them become citizens.

it's really about qualifications and the ability to do the job. There are plenty of Americans employed at high wages in tech, but it's not enough. If you want more Americans hired then fix the education system. American education is the best if you're a member of the elite, but the worst if you're not.

In regards to the visa ban, corporate America could have show some long term thinking and national responsibility and paid their taxes, and used their bribes and influence (I mean campaign contributions) to fund and improve America's schools and have had an army of Americans (including all the underemployed minorities protesting lately) trained with the skills they want and need now. In this case Trump and Silicon Valley are playing chicken and I hope they both win the Darwin award this year.

There are plenty of Americans trained in the skills needed, the problem is that they demand fair wages versus foreigners who will work for less money. It is all about economics (higher profit margains), not a mythical skill gap.
