Mark & Carrie: Social Distance Breakfast Smoothie - Mustang Edition

Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs

Mark Blyth, political economist at Brown's Watson Institute, and Carrie Nordlund, political scientist and associate director of Brown's Master of Public Affairs program, share their take on the news.
One this episode: how to model the coronavirus(and therefore, our future); what different national responses to the pandemic reveal about their economies and politics; Bernie Sanders' departure from the Democratic Primary, and the Democratic Party's socially distanced nominee; how to vote in a pandemic; countries that are -- unbelievably -- handling this worse than the US; quarantine cooking adventures.
If you like Mark and Carrie, check out Watson's other politics and policy podcast, Trending Globally. You can also find it wherever you listen to podcasts, or on Soundcloud here: [ / tracks ]

THIS is what was learned from 2008: extract all profit for yourself and shareholders, and moral hazard pays dividends. Oh, make sure you grow to be too big to fail also, or at least have your lobbyists grease up some senators so they can make the argument that you're too strategic to be allowed to go into Chapter 11 (which would just mean the planes continue to fly, but shareholders take a bath). @13:05 *"Why is it that the administration is taking weeks and weeks to get checks to people who have no money. Because 80 million workers in America are hourly workers with no statutory sick pay. And yet you can bet your bottom 50 billion dollars that the money for the corporates was there within 24 hours"* It's very simply actually. The plan was not to give significant relief to workers and to delay whatever relief was provided so that people will run out of money. A huge portion of the population lives paycheck to paycheck. They know this. So if they don't provide relief people will insist that the quarantine ends. They want to restart the economy, they have from day one. But if they hadn't followed suit with the rest of the world and put measures in place, there would have been massive liability legally, financially and politically. So instead they arrange it so that people have no other choice. That word "choice" is key. They'll say "people wanted to return to work. That's not our fault". But it is.

Regarding the whole ontological divide that seems to be growing more and more apparent and relevant, I think Adorno and Horkheimer might have been onto something with their conception of "the dialectic of enlightenment" which basically argued through a hegelian dialectical framework that the full embrace of enlightenment philosophy and empiricism results in a sort of over-emphasis on "rationality" and technocratic narratives that completely overshadow the inverse ideal of "myth", and thus without a proper synthesis/balance/awareness of these two conceptions, an inevitable regression of "enlightenment" back toward its seemingly more explicitly fictional pole of "myth" is inevitable in some form. So I think they use like national socialism as an example where the "enlightenment" framework of like a supposedly _meritocratic liberal democracy_ swings like a pendulum in the ideological realm back into a different conception of epistemic social organization based on a mythologized past and narrative driven future (that whole 3rd reich thing). If that makes any sense... The key interesting thing I thought was that both of these poles create a sort of feedback loop with each other, like how Marx uses the dialectic to conceive of the "dialectical materialism" perspective where the ideological and material "realms" are in a constant state of interaction and neither one or the other is more "real" but rather both together constitute reality as a whole. Or something. I don't know, maybe it's just abstract enough that it fits, but it seems pretty explanatory of that ontological divide.
@Account.for.Comment
@Account.for.Comment 4 года назад
I get some of what you are saying but can you please dumb it down, or is it the point? Basically, technical-sounding jargons are obscuring people news-reading skills and increase the divide, because they cannot understand wtf the other side is saying. Am I accurate.?
@Bisquick
@Bisquick 4 года назад
@@Account.for.Comment So like, and this will be the least helpful response here lol, but I would say _kind of_ . Perhaps a decent clarification might be Hume's "is/ought" distinction or just a general conflation that scientific reasoning, though describing what _is_ , can then also guide us to what we _ought_ to do if that clears anything up. So arising from this sort of logic you get sort of "technocratic solutions" to things that are fundamentally _un_ technocratic in nature. Kind of like the idea of neoliberalism in general as focusing on metrics like GDP or something say, instead of like, happiness or some democratic legitimacy. So the distinction I'm trying to make from your paraphrasing is that the whole enlightenment empiricism is in itself _also_ myth but we like to ascribe a sort of "objective" nature to the results it gives us which, as a description is incredibly useful (aka science), but as a sort of guide leave us lost in a sea of numbers that many seem to just sense is "wrong" in some way. I don't know hopefully that cleared a little bit up, but you can probably find the full text and stuff online if you're interested and don't want my dumb take on it ha.
@Account.for.Comment
@Account.for.Comment 4 года назад
@@Bisquick Yeah, the scientific method, developed by the great Issac Newton, is the combination of taking empirical data and coming up with rationalist mathematical argument. If sth is to be called true, it must be true of all time. Later science philosophers gave another improved version saying, for a statement can be called scientific, it must be able to be proven wrong. Clausowitz in his book "On War" stated that war is like commerce cannot properly be called "an art or a science". All of social arguments made by the enlightment and later social scientists are IMO fit in this category. They are have the elements of universal truth to them, but they are unable to disprove or determined to be a correlation or a causation. Had the elements of art is talked more in social sciences, the confusion is not as high as it is now.

I do wonder WRT airplanes, is there some ongoing maintenance cost they have even if they're not flying? Do the airports charge them for storage to leave their planes on the field or something? Maybe if there is, it's not enough to excuse a bailout but I was just wondering. On the other hand, the number of people they employ both in the air and on the ground is significant, and might be difficult to ramp back up after layoffs, so one argument could be if they don't get bailed out when it comes time to get them going again we'll have to wait for it, which of course, the wealthy are to impatient to want to do. I'm not a big fan of airlines anyway, and avoid using them as much as has been possible-- not looking forward to ever using them again. This crisis could give me an excuse to avoid them in the future, because I work at home on the west coast for a company that is almost all on the east coast-- once in awhile they want me to fly out there and face-to-face where I'd rather do it from here via zoom or something...

We will never have the ability in the US to have real time testing - we have outsource our technical capability to do this to China, it's gone. We are now living the new NORMAL. Some people live and work semi sheltered at home, the "essential" workers are treated like animals, working for slave wages delivering crap to your house til they get sick and die. it's sorta Solyent Green, but we're not eating people - yet. Our health care insurance system will collapse and be bailed out while the same CEOs that managed it into the ground get record income. We will have food shortages. We will have civil unrest because it's incited by our elites to keep half of the wage slaves fighting the other half of the wage slaves. We will continue to have two political parties that work together to ensure America is continue to be run into the ground for the elites. Biden will lose. You are not an elite.

The real rate of death is being miscalculated. You have to look at known outcomes when calculating the percentage. So, according to WHO, the known deaths total (as of this post) 125,859. The known cases of recovery total 466,948. The total number of people who have contracted the virus and have a known outcome of either death or recovery totals 592,807. Therefore the death rate is currently 21.23% (125,859/592,807). This is a far more accurate assessment because all of the people who currently have the virus will either recover or die. As far as I'm concerned, the governments and health organizations of the world are misleading us as to the severity of this virus. I'm sure they have their interests they are trying to protect, be it reputation, political, or economic, but viruses don't care about the creations of mankind. Take precautions, stay safe, and don't let fear/paranoia lead you to make unwise decisions.
@aliasoma
@aliasoma 4 года назад
@@paullymberopoulos2593 No, you aren't. The models they are currently using increases the denominator by including all known cases of covid (and in some cases throwing in suspected, but unconfirmed cases based on how they know a virus spreads) and then keeps the deaths as the numerator. But this is deceiving since the deaths are definitive. The confirmed recoveries are definitive. So what they should be emphasizing is that of the documented cases there is a 21% mortality rate. That number will only go down once mass antibody testing goes into effect in order to increase the number of confirmed cases of recovery.
@rathelmmc3194
@rathelmmc3194 4 года назад
That is literally the most absurd way to determine a death rate. Imagine this scenario, you have a virus that infects people. 999 out of 1000 people show no symptoms. You’d never know they were sick. That 1 out of 1000 person though always ends up in the hospital and always dies. So by your metric the virus has a 100% death rate.
@aliasoma
@aliasoma 4 года назад
@@rathelmmc3194 Which is why I stated CONFIRMED CASES. Does nobody read anymore? Besides that, how can you possibly calculate a mortality rate when you don't have the slightest idea how many people have contracted the virus? The 21% confirmed mortality rate WILL GO DOWN once antibody testing is done on a mass scale and I stated as such. It just isn't likely going to go down to the mortality rate that they are currently ESTIMATING.

luv the Mustang analogy but how is today not feudalism? The feudal peasants were by definition landless and of course currency didn't exist. Today currency is a myth (like feudal belief in divine right of kings?) and what percentage of 'the land' belongs directly or indirectly to the feudal lord (bond holders)? Feudal peasants were of course epochly ignorant whereas today's peasants have PBS as 'educational' broadcasting. How is 'modern' education and especially 'higher education' not catechism in the mercantile western canon of the present age? The medieval (and ancient) intellectual world had Astrology [re: Isaac Newton among others] not to mention Aristotle's 'medicine', whereas we have the entire world view of 'social science' (seeded by Karl Marx?). The human mind is a fertile plain in which to sow the seeds for infinite regeneration but concepts that really redefine reality such as gravity (still not fully understood and possibly the 'flat earth' of our age) will have to wait for generations, if not epochs.

Ecuador is bad. Bodies on the street. Abandoned coffins all over the place. It's on RU-vid channel 4 BBC. Horrendous!

As far as the election and executive power. If Trump impedes the election process he still is beholden to the Jan 20th date. I don't think he would be interested in a potential President Pelosi etc. It would be a huge Constitutional DOGMA and the Supreme Court is conservative. People that want Trump will vote virus be dammned. Lack of enthusiasm is already choking neo liberal conservatism.

When are y'all gonna have Andrew Yang as a guest to talk about how to fix the income shortage even when we have essential services still working. We have so many idle hands and the vital supply chains like food can still run, this wont stay the case if the people forced inside starve

I got nothing from Ding Dong Donny in my account. Plus, how am I going to see his sig on the check if it gets deposited? No way his infantile ego will allow that to go unnoticed.

Why? Let China support their propaganda arm. This is one of the few things Trump is actually correct on. Removing the money during the pandemic is insane and counterproductive, but the WHO has proven themselves useless. The WHO has LIED and deceived the world since the beginning of this crisis pumping out propaganda instead of scientific truth.
