Pastor Mark Driscoll was recently kicked off stage by Pastor John Lindell when he started his speaking time off at the Stronger Men's Conference, hosted at Lindell's James River Church. This is episode 235. Driscoll was upset that there was an acrobat/sword swallower, who turned out to be a former stripper as part of the festivities opening the conference. That's a sentence I never thought I'd put in a podcast description. “The Jezebel spirit opened our event,” Driscoll said, after explaining he was hoarse because he had been up since 1 a.m. praying. “. . . Before the word of God was opened, there was a platform. It was a high place. On it was a pole, an Asherah. The same thing that’s used in a strip club for women, who have the Jezebel spirit to seduce men."
The two seemed to reconcile publically late in the conference, but since then accusations are flying about Mark allegedly undermining the leadership and sowing discord at James River Church. Do men's conferences need all the spectacle? Motorcross, tanks, flamethrowers, etc? Was Driscoll correct in publicly rebuking the conference? How should disagreements between church leaders or Christians in general be handled? Plus Andy is the victim of Jeff's Rapid Fire, Josh Howerton may have plagiarized his apology for a bad joke, & listener feedback.
This is far more than a TMZ-style gossipy reaction episode. So dig in and let us know what you think! #podcast #christianity #jesus #markdriscoll #strongermensconference

Just want to say that as much as I love this podcast and Jeff, it blows my mind that Jeff is taking Driscoll's back on this. Driscoll has been poison to almost every ministry he interacts with. Giving him the benefit of the doubt and attacking Lindell seems very lopsided in my opinion. Jeff, please don't become an angry political evangelical ❤

I'll number these so you can pick and choose what to respond to if any in the next video. 1. That "pastor" who apologized should definitely be fired. Reason... his ONE JOB is to "teach" bible and give biblical life advice. If his sincerity cannot even be authentic in an apology for something he said... how much less is his sincerity in what he believes about what he teaches from scripture or what advice he gives to others? Plagiarizing information or opinions is ONE THING... but plagiarizing your own "sentiments" toward a group of people ("sheep") as a "shepherd" is more than a single questionable act. It is a telling sign of not having respect for your people or yourself and CANNOT be trusted with "gods word" or "life advice". 2. I want to point out.... no "sin" was pointed out... other than possibly publicly condemning someone for what was up to interpretation as a "Jezabel spirit" atmosphere. . . if that's an articulable thing. A man without a shirt on, swallowing a sword under the auspices of the event host that they are demonstrating strength while being a Christian man. There isn't even a verse I can think of that even remotely depicts such a thing as "sin". (unless a woman was doing it) lol Had this been at a woman's retreat... it would have a different meaning/impact and a no brainer as being wrong. Even if it's a headscratcher as to how that's supposed to bring men to Christ... like the strongman "power team" that used to go around ripping phone books in half etc. (Millennial viewers may need an explanation of what those were)... somehow was supposed to be an outreach. To me, it's just another way of bringing entertainment to make Christianity look fun and bring in more butts to the seats. This could lead to more discussions about how "worship" in churches today are "orchestrated" inorganically... but let's leave that off the table for now. and on that note.... 3. Agreeing with Andy, (this time) if we're to play the rules of Churchianity & and/or Paul's letters of instructions to congregations 2,000 years ago... etc... it was a dick move to publicly condemn the event when you had ample opportunity to tackle it together with the event host and even have an open conversation about it. Because it wasn't a clear "sin" and Paul took time to instruct believers in how to condemn fellow believers on things you suspect are sin so as to avoid public shame and give them a chance to acknowledge it. Even more importantly as to why that would have been more prudent.... it may be that the opinion of one about "sin" is in error and THAT opinion needs corrected. That could have given chance for any of the men to address the group as to how the antics were intended to be portrayed, how they may have been misconstrued or how they were actually wrong and apologize. NONE of that was given a chance to happen when Mark sidestepped that "protocol" and made a public condemnation. That's why Mark had to admit he was wrong for that. (according to the Pauline letters). 4. Mark Driscoll is a business man and entertainer. He charges for his services, authors books and pitches them to his "congregants"... and takes tax write-offs related to his "services" and his home and net worth are built on all the above. Is this in any way ... "biblical"? 5. The ENTIRE premise of the drama revolves around a made up, pop-theology term "the Jezebel spirit". LOL It is not something the bible ever mentions. It's a concept taking scripture out of it's context and creating an ethos by which to hold people and situations to... popularized and capitalized on by Christian authors and pastors.(& Thee Brian Eno) I challenge anyone to cite a passage that refers to a "Jezebel spirit". I don't mean concoct a parallel or force a presupposition... I mean show where it exists within the bible. Referring to a Jezebel spirit is the same as referring to "the devils doing" or "the fallen nature of man" or "man's wicked heart", only with the colorful branding of sexuality or feminine personification. 6. As for churchianity being a spectacle... I don't think Christianity nor Judaism was supposed to be an internal, private practice between individuals and God...but rather one about how a community is organized around obedience to God. The events depicted in the bible make that pretty clear. It has always been quite the spectacle to those watching from the outside. (my pithy and hostile summary) 7. Zack, you as a straight white cis-gendered male it doesn't surprise me that you are against diversity. I don't see any purple or blue people on your shirt.

Dave-I so remember the powerful men ripping the phone books in half. I think they may have bent steel for Jesus as well. And, the Jezebel spirit...I don't have a retort. I'm sure you have done your investigating regarding the aforementioned. However, is there anything pointing to that type of behavior?

Sorry what? What were they sitting and drinking at the last supper….grape juice? So long as they’re not getting hammered I genuinely appreciate this. Men being genuine and authentic. This is a channel for men like me. Normalizing a typical male activity with genuine heartfelt discussions of biblical topics. If it’s not for you or causes you issues that’s fine. But this is something I very much appreciate.
