Mark Fenlon, speaker driver designer, discusses the tools at the driver designers disposal to make the driver as stable as possible. He answers the question, 'Assuming one of the goals of full range driver design is to minimise the peaks in frequency response as the bending modes, self resonance and standing waves take effect, what tools are in the driver designers arsenal to minimise this?'

A lot of sensible remarks, communication of real-world experience, that contrasts a lot with audiophile vocabulary that can be heard elsewhere ...

mark audio is gonna be my next speaker build. finally an engineer and not some nonsence. the fact that they give box plans for their drivers speak volumes. i have emailed a few manufacturers about "what is a recommend enclosure for this driver" and they sent me to online calculators or told me my idea was wrong. im just like wtf when you made the driver what box did you put it in ffs?!

The Markaudio speakers are really easy to listen to all day without them getting annoying. Jazz and female voices are freaking amazing sounding on the chr-70. Ive put them in the fenlon design cabinets and they play down to 30hz. Not loud but they reach that low in room.

wonderful discussion - for vintage designers - I think Henry Kloss in the KLH era, had a strong grasp of making cost effective "musical" transducers.

2:10 summing up the compromise of using a single driver to cover the entire bandwidth - "distortion that's pleasing to the ear."

The ear itself produces distortion.

Not saying he is wrong, but I have never heard of the cone requiring to be flexible "you will get no sound out of it"....dont get that, its just pushing sound waves, why does it need to be flexible.

Try to add stuffing to your speaker carefully. Dense but not compressed. Use wool.

make sure your room has good acoustic properties, some dampening in the room might help

So you make a speaker that is not true to the artists intentions. Better make the speaker flat, then if you want to alter the sound use DSP. Or use Dirac. Things have moved on.

I think he explained it well, this driver is designed to operate over a wide frequency spectrum first and foremost. I would call that musical. It also sounds user friendly. Do you play music to pick apart the flaws in your equipment? I don't. I play music to listen to it. If it's not completely flat, I'm not completely devastated like some folks seem to be. Just my 0.02. happy listening 🎧

@@adamreynolds8270 i agree, mark stated his drivers have enough dexterity that they could be used with a DSP.
