This is first review that made me question kermode. That this movie won best editing is an insult to editors everywhere.

I like the way he talks about film but his review of Spectre made me question him also. That film was such a let down.

What Mark fails to address is that the film doesn't earn the right to use the Live Aid concert. Without the concert the film would end as the terrible damp squib, sunday afternoon TV movie biopic it is. By stealing the Live Aid set the film gets an emotional lift in the final 20 minutes and audiences leave cinemas full of emotion and adrenaline and think they've seen a much better film than they have. Garbage

The film was brilliant.
@ianandrewhay
@ianandrewhay 5 лет назад
What do you mean 'steal'? It's a biopic it's meant to take things that happened and recreate them on screen. Most films would suffer if you took off the last 20 mins, I don't see how you can use that method to say therefore the film is awful.
@ljgenes

James White-Aldworth , your argument is wanton garbage. Of course, it took a fucking Live Aid concert as a climax, because it's A FILM, and their goal is to prioritize structure, however it might turn out, overcorrect, technical linearity of events. What's worse, you shat over your own argument in the third sentence by acknowledging that it did get an emotional lift. Yes it did. And that was the goal, and every filmmaker with a sound mind and a beating heart would have done the same if they were forced to condense a Queen story into something approximating a bearable runtime.

Watched it on Channel 4 last night. Hated it. As Mark alluded to, the timeline was all over the shop and personally, that took me out of the film completely. How were they playing fat bottomed girls which was from Jazz before Bohemian Rhapsody which was released? That was on Night at the opera, 3 years earlier. That kind of stuff, just really bugged me.

Bad points: generally poor script, overly colourful cinematography made the scenes not believable, first half of film lacked emotional depth Good points: Brian May dude was utterly convincing. Second half of film had much more gravitas. 6.5/10

It's all about expectations. If you know everything about queen, perhaps you will scrutinise it more and be more critical of it. If you are a casual fan or getting to know the band then chances are you will really enjoy it. Anyway, Tony Wilson once said if its a choice to print the fact or print the legend... print the legend :)

Dreadful film. It seemed like the main direction given to the actors was "look wistfully and / or with pride at whatever anyone is doing". The whole thing had absolutely no atmosphere. The parties looked boring. I didn't believe a single thing any of the stereotype characters said, irrespective of whether the timeline was accurate or not (I know it's not but I didn't care about that)... All in all I have no idea what the point of the film was. That they formed, existed as a band of largely non-disclosed stature for an unknown period of time, they broke up for an unknown period of time then they did live aid? And? So? The real Freddie was extraordinarily charismatic and cheeky. Malik was dead behind the eyes. There was a tiny bit of charisma in the very first time he came on stage. After that, he was extremely nothingy imo, especially the live aid section where it didn't even look like any air was coming out of his mouth, let alone imitating one of the most powerful singers ever. An absolutely vapid dogs dinner of nothingness. Really disappointing that that's the sort of film Brian May wanted to put out. The fact I've been singing Queen songs in the 2 hours since I watched it shows how good Queen are.

Just saw the film yesterday at a local cinema, ( which was packed btw). As a long time Queen fan, who saw them live in 1986, I can fully appreciate how many people were greatly entertained by it, but I was left feeling non plussed, though there were enjoyable aspects to it. I don't even think the film overall captured the essence and enduring appeal of Mercury and Queen, though I am obviously in the minority there. I really like musical bio pics generally, though this one more unintentionally resembled the bio pic satire, "Walk Hard: The Dewy Cox Story" .

The film wasn't awful, but obviously pitched to viewers with 20-second attention spans, because that's about the longest time you'd get before the movie flies on to the next thing. No chance for any depth, and a massive cinematographic cliché-fest.

teeth are just too 'FALSE' & distracting. apparently this is blindingly obvious to some of us and not at all to the majority. they could have done them about 2mm smaller all round it would have been a lot better. by the end of the film I felt like I was watching a 'freddie rabbit' character.

I have stumbled across this tonight and watched it before searching for reviews and I hated it. Well actually hate is a poor choice of word it was so meh. Amazed Mark didn’t mentioned his love of Slade in Flames and paradoxes it. Slade in Flames …. Gritty and with energy Bohemian Rapsody was just tedious and bland and a template of beats that really doesn’t deserve anyones time

It's a terrible movie. It unashamedly rewrites Queen history in a terrible way. Rami's performance as Freddie is great. But the Freddie that he portrays isn't the Freddie that actually existed: in particular his life as a gay man. This review actually makes me question Kermode's opinion as a reviewer. As a total piece of fiction the film is acceptable. As the "biopic" it's supposed to be it's dreadful.

Awesome to see people giving opinions on a movie that they hated so much but it did over $900 million at the box office and by the way guys I do voting information here at the states. It finished second at the Oscar ballot for best picture. The band has the right to tell the story they want to tell, they signed on so this project would be made. It’s the story they wanted to tell and period. If you wanted a complicated life story and then seeing Freddy die on his bed all skinny and with skin peeling off then we would have people criticizing that also. It’s a story , with funny moments , liberties taken in the story that were approved by the band, so our opinions and feelings really do not matter. This movie actually did do something , we have kids now listening to Queen and belting out loud “I want to break free “ or “Don’t stop me now” on top of the other classics. This movie did what queen wanted, it re-introduced their band to a new audience. At the end Queen won. 👑

"The band has the right to tell the story they want to tell" yeah a total fictional story. if you are a queen fan, do you want a movie that tells a fictional story of the band or do you want a fact based story? brian may was talking about making a sequel to this movie. cant wait for that. maybe it will have aliens and monsters in it

@@teclo1057 ! You have more people than ever listening to their music and the band now floats in more money than they ever did when they were on their peak, artists never made money selling music before it was always concerts and tours, well only In the last 3 years Queen has increased its royalties to $186 Million. It’s an important amount since there is a also a crew of people and techs that needs to be fed that happens to be integral to the band. Reason why bands like Ac/DC , The Stones, other bands have kept their crews pretty much intact for over 30-40 years . 🙂🎸 🎤
