Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and Syd Barrett interviewed on The Look of the Week, May 1967. The Look of the Week was a Sunday night arts programme on BBC2, which looked at the major artistic events of the previous seven days. Pink Floyd had come to prominence on London's underground club scene, attracting attention for their unique psychedelic, improv-heavy sound and hallucinogenic light shows. At the time of the interview the band had performed the first-ever surround sound concert at “Games for May,” a lavish affair at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall where they performed material from their soon-to-be released debut album - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The Look of the Week represented the first substantial media exposure for band. The interviewer is Austrian musician and critic Hans Keller.

Damn Syd was so coherent and intelligent here...sad that just a short time later everything went downhill for him. I prefer the Floyd with Gilmour but there's no denying Syd's immense psychedelic talent and song writing! It's a shame what happened to him. I'm modifying this comment to add that I highly recommend checking out Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets if you get a chance to. I always liked the Syd era stuff but it gave me a whole new appreciation for Syd seeing and hearing his songs done exquisitely by Nick and his band! Frankly I'd take Nick's band over Roger Waters any day!

Interesting, the interviewer starts off snobbish and hostile so Roger fires back with sarcasm and cynicism, but with Syd you notice how he is sort of the mediator. I don't think the interviewer was particularly snobbish at the beginning. The interviewer is a famous classical music theorist. He could easily have said Pink Floyd is unsophisticated, but he doesn't. He says it is too loud for him. Think about what that means. This is a man whose whole career is built on the idea that he understands music. And he just goes ahead and implies he can't understand Pink Floyd because it's loud. That's incredibly humble.

What I love about Pink Floyd the most is that despite Barrett not being part of Floyd when they really hit it off, he remained a part of Floyd as their unseen 5th member despite not having anything to do with the band. With Syd, he gave Floyd artistry behind music, not just the music itself being art, but having the concept of presenting art with music; even before music videos. I think it says alot about how much Floyd really honored Syd along with their personal friendships, by always having 'him' around by taking his concepts and using them to create some of the best albums and live show performances the world has ever seen.

The incident had actually already happened before this TV appearance. Sometimes he functioned, sometimes he didn't. He wasn't THAT gone by this time but many people, including pink floyd, state that he'd lost the sparkle in his eyes, traded with empty eyes. But his travel down the rabbit hole continued on into early 70's. I can't really think of even one person I'd think deserved the mental fight he probably went through.. Acid and psychedelic's are one hell of a drug, and it doesn't help when people you're constantly surrounded by drug you down every moment they can get to see what their Star/Hero is capable off.

From 3:08 onward you can clearly see the LIFE and SPARKLE in his eyes. He was literally smiling the entire time from that point forward. There was an air of lightness and happiness to him. He had such charm and awareness at that stage. It's CRAZY how only a month or two later he would overdose and the person that was Sid would be no more. Nobody home. Like a lobotomy, where the personality is killed but the body lives on.

That's awful. I had a friend who had a weekend drug party all by himself on his back porch and he stayed back there for 48hrs it was his dog a Golden that frantically tried to get people to that backyard to help the guy. Anyway he had a stroke and lost his marbles lost his job, everything he had he lost. He had to go live with his mom in a trailer park and she hated taking care of him. His job hated him too since everyone's insurance premiums went up because of his care. A slob a selfish slob these types are. So cool and handsome until they eff up.

Simply is an understatement I'm sure, don't think they had the heart to say it to him. Younger people may not get who Hans Keller was. He was as crazy as Syd in a lot of ways. An oddball who could be very funny or irritating, but I think very intellectually honest in his oddball way. I don’t think he is being rude or arrogant here. He came from a completely different world than Floyd and he was genuinely interested in what he asked. Classical music can be loud and violent and wild too, but things like volume are on a different scale altogether and he is wondering why it is generally always blasting, or something like fffffff in his world. It is a good question as to why it’s so loud. It seems a weird question to ask us now because the volume of rock is built into our culture. But it wasn’t part of his culture and I’m sure he thinks they are losing a means of expression when they play loud all the time. This kind of expression is not really used in rock music, though it can be. Rock doesn’t require distinctions between mf and f because it is usually irrelevant to the expression of the music. Whoever put this together with Keller and Floyd knew that and a had a little fun, but, you know, why not?

How wonderful to see Syd - whose name was Roger, too, so you had two Rogers there! - talk intelligently about his art/music (and Roger as well), fully aware of who he was as an artist and who his audience was. This is the foundation of any artist’s work and career, and necessary for conceptually-based work which these gentlemen have been well known for. Unfortunately, drugs and, as someone else mentioned, the Music Business and its pressures took their toll him (and his bandmate as well although it took longer to affect him). Who knows what might have been, but we can revel in Syd’s time and we have his amazing music to inspire us always. ❤️

Carmelita Olsen syd got that temper after he went insane, this was him back when he was normal, around 1970 he started to spiral out of control and pretty much went insane. He took way too much acid and would do LSD every day which really fucked with his mind, unfortunately after 75, syd was never the same and died alone. I have no idea where footage like this comes from but this is interesting seeing Syd and Roger in a actual interview, not just cut scenes and voice over trails. The interviewer is certainly "honest" if a bit lacking in tact, but not too much. My mother and my brother liked Pink Floyd's Roger Waters/David Gilmour stuff, but I wanted to link them this. They are not as familar with Syd Barret! Seems very smart here, not what he is depicted in some shorts I see on other YTbrs vids!
