“Is it the greatest film ever made? As Orson himself would have said; ‘Probably’.”

It's never my favorite, but I still watch it every few years: a certain something that is endlessly compelling. Maybe the first U.S. movie to be about more than a story and its characters.

It's universal in its themes and looks truthfully at humanity. It was head and shoulders above any other film made at that time, in terms of dialogue, acting and camera technique and editing. It was ahead of its time. It looks like a film from 1961 not 1941.

@@benfisher1376 "It looks like a film from 1961, not 1941". That's excellent and I think very close to what many identify in the movie as something lasting.

@Postmodern Recycler It has a scene with a woman taking an overdose and she's sweaty and a mess. For 1941 that was groundbreaking.

What Mark Kermode doesn’t know about films and the film business you can write in the back of a postage stamp

It won the Oscar in the only underperforming element of the film the screenplay should have won cinematography instead

I don't think any film deserves the title of greatest film ever made because there is a vast world of cinema out there. As for Kane, it's a fine film and my favorite moments were Kane wrecking that bedroom and that tragic shot of Kane's reflection in those mirrors.

I remember seeing it rereleased in cinemas and it was amazing in Hd and in 4K

Citizen Kane is better than Vertigo. It's far more entertaining for one thing, and - with the exception of the trombone zoom - is far more influential on cinema. Vertigo is a fantastic film, but it's not one I watch over and over again as I can with Citizen Kane. I suspect if we give it another decade fashions will swing around again, and Kane will top the list once more.

It is a truly great film whether its the greatest film ever made well thats subjective. But if your a true lover film history you must see this film.

Not the Greatest but the first Greatest film ever made.
@BadGuyRants
@BadGuyRants Год назад
There were several films made before it that could have that title. Kane definitely influenced everything else that came after it but even in this film there are influences from previous works.
@Hritik9000
@Hritik9000 Год назад
@@BadGuyRants yeah the camera movements and cinematography was influenced by silent films and some films which came a couple years before Kane, but Kane had everything perfect from its sound design to acting hence it became the first gold standard for films.

You need to watch more films then. Start Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd in the silent era, then with Capra, Lubitsch, Ford, Wilder in the '30s.

I don't get it. It came out after Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz, both of which arguably made greater technical advancements and appealed to a greater audience. Kane is a dull story about unpleasant people to be honest, though I do see the humour in it but it's not a comedy. Critics call it the Greatest Film Ever for the same reason they call the dull Ulysses the Greatest Book Ever, its to display a cultural superiority to justify their place.

The last thing Ulysses is is dull. One of the most wildly inventive novels ever in terms of it's language, and also endlessly hilarious which it doesn't get enough credit for.
