Hopkins is wonderful in this movie, a very subtle performance.

De Niro deserved an Oscar for "Raging Bull", but so did Hurt and Hopkins for their performances in this excellent film

Hurt was a phenomenal actor. Back in the 80s I requested and received an autographed photo of him and for the life of me cannot recall what happened to it. I also thought his performance in the biopic "Champions" (1984), based on the British steeplechase rider Bob Champion, who overcame cancer, was exceptional. And, going further back, did a fine turn in "10 Rillington Place" (1970).

Director David Lynch makes one of his best films, the cast deliver one of their best roles in this emotional, stylish, masterfully directed & well crafted biopic. (93%) (4.5/5 stars) (positive)

Why? Is it because it's so sad and emotional?

Ah, the Critic. Referred to by the late great Kenneth Williams as _"the eunach at the orgy."_

What? And Kenneth Williams died 34 years ago, mate. Hardly late, albeit great.

You mean Joseph Merrick?
@jonathanb1406
@jonathanb1406 4 года назад
He does, that's literally why he said Joseph to start with? He says "nay John Merrick" because the films script calls him John.

Reongaro Yes, again, because the film calls him John.

I wonder why the movie chose John instead of his actual name, Joseph.

In the original manuscript of the book this film was based on, "The Elephant Man And Other Reminiscences" by Frederick Treves, his name was written as Joseph, but for reasons no-one knows to this day, Treves crossed out all references to "Joseph" Merrick and wrote over them "John". Treves did develop alzheimers in later life so it's possible this is why, but it's one of things we'll probably never find out.

I'm still puzzled by this odd fashion for burning in English subtitles for videos. It's obviously great that captions are available, but why are you forcing us all to read them? I paid no attention to this at all, I was just reading along with the words as spoken. I can't not read the text. Maybe I should mute the audio.
