I see the negative comments but to me the film is a masterpiece. Beautifully shot, stunning locations, and Brigitte at her very best. Cameo by Mr Fritz Lang adorable. Parlance and Piccolli superb. The music score unforgettable. It encapsulates a period in time never to be repeated, it’s a fascinating story of man’s struggle within himself for the competing complexities that rule so many of our lives … sex, greed, desire, faithfulness, jealousy … Look a little deeper. Enjoy the rich landscape. Settle into it. It’s fabulous. It also captures one of cinemas most enduring beauties and icons in her prime. If Brigitte stepped out of this film and onto the streets today, she would still be every bit as desirable. Maybe even more so. Her look has made, and has continued to make, plastic surgeons very rich and forever turned the little fishing port of St Tropez into an international destination forevermore ❤

The comments that don’t like this. If you have ever felt yourself wearing Paul’s shoes for even a moment this art/career/love/power tragedy is a mirror.

I always wondered why he had such big stars that certainly isn't new wave.

For me, the best thing about this film is that I've seen it now and I never have to watch it again. I feel the same way about _À Bout de Souffle._

Beautiful cinematography and a beautiful score, ruined by unlikable characters and intolerable dialogue. Not even the best movie to end with the word “silencio”.

I want so much to join the party and see what every one else sees, but this movie is such a chore to sit through. The half an hour argument in their apartment where they refuse to communicate with each other and just repeat the same lines is interminable! How can anyone enjoy such relentless empty dialogue. Godard's characters are always so awful, despicable, intolerable, I can't wait to be rid of them. The leading man in Breathless is horrifying. The leading woman in A Married Woman is awful. Why make such unbearable movies? Please someone show me how they derive pleasure from sitting through these films. PLEASE!

No, you are wrong again. You may not realize it but watching a movie and getting what you get from it is "learned", so beware because what you see in a film is yourself.

I agree with you , I don't think it's a good film . It seems to be one of those films it's always been fashionable to like - you can wear your appreciation as a badge of good taste , especially if your a bit pretentious .

I've seen this film . The soundtrack is astonishingly beautiful but it can't disguise brigitte bardots terrible acting and lack of personality .

Andy Nixon I think brigitte’s acting uplifted the film. Her subtlety with such intense emotions without directly expressing them only added to a deeper understanding. It’s as though she was able to express so much without speaking at all.

@@basicbot7349 I can see what you're aiming at but no , she's just a crap actress I'm sorry to say . Many directors fell in love with her beauty but unlike sophia loren or monica vitti or Catherine deneuve she doesn't have the talent or charisma to be a great actress .

@@andynixon2820 Have you ever watched "La Vérité", "Le Repos du Guerrier", "En Cas de Malheur" ? Did you watch an entire movie with her ? Because Brigitte Bardot is the kind of actress who at first sounds awfully "unatural" with a childish capricious voice, and "awkward" when acting... but as the film progresses you are so taken in and moved by her personality, her boldness, her "efficient" acting, her words, and then you eventually think "it's always better to take time for having a second thought..." In today's society people do not take time... In France a lot of arty critics used to took some pleasure in the 60s and 70s on insisting on "how bad she was" but since her talent has been honestly recognized. Also the fact that she always played in French language (except for a couple of minor roles in English) explains why she was never "validated" by the US film industry (and therefore US/UK critics).
