Nowadays a lot of music seems to be made of plastic: fake, mass-produced and soulless. Politically correct weak lyrics and false non-conformism. Today the songs last a few months and are then replaced by others and so on in a dull, grey, sad row, but all that remains is that short period of time. Why? The answer is simple: these songs are "aseptic" and don't tell a story. Instead, the groups of a certain era, starting with the old time blues, proceeding to the rock with the Beatles, Dire Straits, passing through the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and others, remain in the history of music because the songs have a concrete story to tell, something true and immortal, always valid and forever for everyone. Dire Straits is one of the greatest examples. Mark Knopfler writes imaginative, poetic and overwhelming lyrics; he composes intense music that touches the deepest strings of the heart, and his guitar seems to be speaking, accompanying the words with a sound and solos that have no equal (or few) in the history of rock. His style is fine and strong, sophisticated but immediate: I think the blues had a strong influence on Mark and you can see that he doesn't really play the blues (at least with Dire Straits) but he plays in a "bluesy way", so he can make his guitar talk like an old bluesman did. He learned from the blues and put the soul of the blues in his original rock style. You can litlen to Mark and then to Fred McDowell (to give an example among many old blusmen) and you'll feel the same. Mark is a genius, a humble and intense person who created a unique style. At the time he made history in a panorama dominated by punk and even today his songs are as valid as if they had been written yesterday. This is the difference: today music is created to generate immediate and ephemeral television success: it's a fashion that disappears with a breath of wind. At the time, music lasted because it was true, because it had true things to say. Thanks Mark!
